PS Curlip is a replica of a paddle steamer workhorse of the Snowy River 100 years ago. Now under construction at hte Old Butter Factory on the banks of the Snowy River at Orbost, she is an amazing sight to behold, as 40 tonnes of bluegum evolves into a boat. The construction shed can be visited Tues to Sat. This is a community project: after commissioning in November this year she will take tours on the Snowy River estuary.

Seeing a Paddle steamer being built is one of the most interesting things I have seen. The energy of the volunteers on this project is an inspiration to all and a tribute to past generations.

This is a most exciting project, combining a piece of maritime history with two rivers of enormous tourist potential (Snowy and Brodribb) in the most magnificent landscape to be found in Victoria.

This project to build the PS Curlip has been one of the most exciting things to
happen in our district for years.
The whole community are involved in the construction and are proud of a
remake of an original Icon that plyed the Snowy River over 100 years ago.
This project will become the central attraction for an area that is already
a destination for it’s natural beauty.

Teamwork and community spirit together with a dream have enabled the lifesytle, romance and hard work of the past be part of today. It will enable tourism in our own backyard, with relaxing river boat experience on our own Snowy River.

I am fascinated by history and in particular that of my own country and community. I think it’s great that history can be recreated. This is a wonderful community project. Congratulations to the many dedicated people who have devoted so much time to it. It will provide much pleasure for tourists and help to promote East Gippsland as a premier holiday destination. I cannot wait for the day when I will be able to travel the Snowy estuary and the Brodribb River.

The Curlip has drawn many people together in the Orbost township, from school children to retirees, to work together on a project which both kindles appreciation for the fortitude of the pioneers and also hope for the communities future. It has also generated the coming together of ancient trade skills, hospitality and creative arts. The wooden boat is being assenbled with boat making art able to be observed by intreuged visitors whilst being passed on to the younger genertaion; community events are well patronised and supported by citizens proud to be associated with project and artists captured by the nostaligic vision of the Curlip plying the beautiful Snowy have painted scenes from the past for souveneirs. Moreover the Curlip has caught the attention of many accross Australia who treck to Gipplsland to savour this inspiring and historic project.

The building of this Paddle Steamer is a huge undertaking and I was extreamly impressed by the dedication shown by the people of Orbost area, many of whom give their time freely to the project.
The information provided is first class giving a lot of the historical background about the original P.S. Curlip and her tragic demise, through to the conception of an idea to re-build a replica and how this has been achieved from the cutting of the first timber through the various stages of her re-birth.
I am told that when the project is completed sometime this year, the Curlip will take passengers for trips along part of the great Snowy River and other rivers around the Marlo area. I will certainly be buying a ticket for this trip!
The countryside and beaches around Marlo and Orbost are quite beautiful and very soothing for the soul.

This project is a real credit to all involved as it is a great asset to the Orbost community attracting people to the local area and is largely being built by volunteer labour. It is well organised and advertised by friendly interested and interesting volunteers who do a great job seeling their product.

The Curlip is the result of a huge amount of hardwork and enthusiasm by volunteers from the Orbost region. You will be able to take a trip on this historic replica paddle steamer from November on and see the beautiful Snowy River and Estuary.
