Nestled in a picturesque valley, Buchan is best known for its spectacular underground limestone caves. Marvel at the elaborate stalactites and stalagmites of the Fairy Cave and the beautiful calcite-rimmed pools of the Royal Cave.

Although it is in isolated East Gippsland, it is truly a magnificent formation by nature.

It is absolutely amazing the different formations once you go underground.and see this amazing natural wonder. This is helped by man with lighting installed ,for us to see it so much more clearer.

One of my favourite places on the planet. The caves are spectacular and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The parks surrounding the caves are an awesome place to see native wildlife in their natural habitat. If you don’t see a kangaroo while you are there then you must have your eyes closed. Great for all ages.

A tour of the woonderful Buchan Caves is fascinating with stories of how these deep dark caverns were explored with adventurers wearing headlamps and ropes as safety gear and stepping out into the darkness or wriggling through tight tunnels into the unknown and thereby giving us all the opportunity to see the stalactites, stalagmites and roots of huge trees from below. A visit to these caves is not to be missed for adults or children. A fun day out!

Living in Bairnsdale it’s great to have a local attraction that you can take the kids too and its a different experience every time! The kangaroos, camping facilites and to experience the caves at different levels. Its a great experience for all the family! As they get older they make new memories at the one place. Its a must for everyone locally and throughout Australia.

The Buchan Caves, in the small rural township of Buchan nestled in a very pretty little valley, offers visitors a unique experience to see the underground wonderland formed in a limestone environment. It is close to the Snowy River and is certainly worth a visit for at least a couple of days to see all the sites intrinsic to the area.

The caves are real without fancy lighting and big tourist groups, the camping grounds are beautiful, bush wallabies, birds and beautiful trees. The town is welcoming and very Australian.

Absolutely beautiful park, and a challenge to take a dip in the freezing cold fresh mountain water pool! Magic caves welcome you - it is like entering an underground fairy land.

I’m a 14 year old girl and my mum and i went to the buchan caves in my holidays. Even though i’m still pretty young i really appreciated such a wonderful creation. I think it’s great that we can see such an awsome thing but it’s also great that they don’t let us in some parts of the caves to preserve the crystals and lime stone.

The Buchan Caves Reserve has so much to offer - amazing limestone caves, beautiful parklands, wildlife, bushwalks, a spring fed swimming pool and of course new wilderness retreat accommadation . It is also the gateway to Snowy River country which has some of the most remote and spectacular scenery in the state.

After seeing the beautiful caves at Buchan, the more adventurous will appreciate the thrill of caving in some ‘wild’ caves. We geared up in overalls and helmets and were taken on a tour through some wild caves. Not for the physically unfit, our entire family of two adults and two children feel this is one of our more memorable adventures.

Memories of a meltingly hot summer’s day when we went swimming in the icy water of the historical stone pool, visited the caves after wandering with the kangaroos in the camping ground, then sitting under the verandah of the general store opposite the pub and watching the silver rain sheets, whilst getting a dose of country hospitality.

This is a fabulous place to take your family for a holiday. We have been camping here several times and my children are not easy to appeal too as there is a big age range between them but this place is acceptable to all, and even eagerly anticipated.

Buchan Caves is one of the wonders of this state, Victoria. Nestled amongst the gum trees, is a beautifully kept camping ground and an abundance of friendly kangaroo’s, Buchan is a delightful place to stay awhile and explore. The caves themselves are well worth the long and scenic trip down the highway to get to. Let your mind wonder just how were the caves discovered, without of course, the modern technology of today. Amazing.

Though it’s a long drive from Melbourne to get there, this at least assures a relatively peaceful visit. The local kangaroos are always a treat and the caves are a real pleasure. Nothing beats camping in this location: a combination of convenience and relative isolation.
