As Australia’s wool capital and the centre of the development of Western Victoria as the producer of the finest wool in the world the woolbrockers played a major roll . The pioneers laid the industry in Geelong out very well, with the woolen mills built olong the Bay side of the Barwon River, giving a good supply of fresh water to scour the wool and the wool brokers building the storage facilities close to the piers on the bay front for shipping to Europe. The Dennys Lascelles Wool Store with it’s saw tooth roof for dislaying the wool to buyers prior to auction was a great start to selling wool in Australia prior to shipping . Therefore with the 20th Anniversary coming up, this Geelong icon, where visiters can explore this early history and the journey of wool from sheepback to finished product must be judged the “must see” for all locals and tourists.

I visited the National Wool Museum with my Year 6 students. The visit was very enjoyable. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and aimed the presentation age appropraitely. My students enjoyed the opportunity to feel wool and explore the two houses set up as part of the displays.

The Museum has a range of displays which could be adapted across the Curriculum. Education staff were more than happy to work with me to ensure our specific learning outcomes were met.

The craft activity at the conclusion to the visit was fun and challenging and my students enjoyed being able to take the bracelets home with them. Thank you for a wonderful visit.

Where else would a city dweller like myself see a sheep being sheared (live in stage!), touch ( and smell!) various types of wool, buy a pair of wool-lined slippers? Where else but the Geelong Wool Museum. Truly novel experience for me.

We went to the Wool Museum in the school holidays. We had fun making shearer’s buns in the kitchen and watching a sheep get sheared naked! Mum & Dad found all of the displays very interesting too.

This facility is so interesting and educational telling the story of the wool industry. The excellent displays of the farming and factory processing of Australias wool demonstrates just how important wool has been to the Australian economy.
The School holiday program taught children how to cook “Shearers Buns” and a shearer described the life of a shearer followed by the shearing of a sheep.
Excellent for Adults, Children and particularly visitors to Geelong.

Fantastic place , attended with our very active playgroup , the childrens ages ranged from 6 month to 3 1/2 years or there teddy bears picnic.
The staff were outstanding, it was a very enjoyable and pleasant morning - the children were kept entertained by many different activites and the surroundings and set up were amazing .My 19month old had a ball banging the pots with the wooden spoon and seeing her Paddington “fly”…… Well done Felicity and staff at the centre - you truly have lots of patience to deal with this many children…..1 is hard enough! A very happy Mum…..we will be back (maybe on our own next time!)
