The Yarra Valley Railway runs from the old Healesville station, approximately 5 km throught the historic tunnel, built in 1889, to behind the Tarawarra Museum of Art. It is operated and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers who realise the potential of the railway. With a newly restored steam engine returning in 2010, the YVR is set to become one of victoria’s iconic attractions.

This is a great example of our railway heritage at work and has the benefit of being close to Melbourne.

A great find soon after arriving in Melbourne. Made a great day out for my son and we plan to make return visits as the railway gets extended.

    My perfect day..

Having the young energetic kids kept busy in the playground while I and the other half can have a nice peaceful browse the organic market (on Saturday) by the station, or hop into the original Healesville station and have a cup of freshly grinded coffee by the fire served up for the friendliest volunteer staffs while admiring some restored waggons and guard van and reminesing about the old days and feel with joy seeing the band of deicated volunteers keeping the railway history alive!

Then see the old restored line up as close as you get to the track as possible on a old restored track ganger’s trolley ride which departs on the hour, up to the tunnel (only one on a preerved toruist railway line in Victoria!) and back to Healesville station

Finally ending it with a “workshop tour” by one of the volunteers on request and see the hard restoration works in progress first hand like the “Walker” railmotor on loan to YVR brings back days of catching on of these to school and can’t wait to see that back on the rails!

Well done YVR volunteers and keep up the great work!

This Station was built in 1902 and has been beautifully restored. This along with the railway experience keeps our history alive.

A great railway plus it is the only preserved railway with a tunnel. Good luck on the future guys. Still gotta make some time to get down there and look at the progress.

Our family loved going on the trolley rides. The scenery is really lovely and the tunnel is pretty amazing. The ticket cost is very reasonable. The volunteers all do a wonderful job running the historic railway. The kids love the wonderful playground just across from the station.

This is a fantastic experience. We have experienced the trolley ride twice. We loved seeing the big Clydesdales and wagon at the station - just like the old days. Our family really enjoyed Halloween night and the ride on the Ghost train. The scenery is amazing. Terrific value and well worth taking the time to do. We will be back!

Great to see a place so close to melbourne preserving the Victorian Railway heritage and is some might call an active muesum!

Although this group is at the baby stage like the brother group Puffing Billy back in the 50s (look how far they come since then), but unlike them they didn’t faced with and still continues to face many hurdles,

Yet thanks to a small band of decicated volunteers at YVR still continues to solders on and look at how much has been achived from how little they got projects like parts of the line re-worked, including a couple of timber bridges restored a locomotive, a few rollingstock just to name a few

bloody well done all at YVR and keep up the good work, and I urge everyone to support it.. or at least visit it before casting any opinion!

A true piece of living history that is a marvel to be shared and enjoyed - step back in time and relive a piece of history that can only be enjoyed from the tracks. The scenery, the architecture, the history - all a joy to take in. Great work by the the YVTR team…

    Keep up the good work

An absolute must-not-forget when you are in the Yarra Valley. See places you otherwise would never get to. Great fun for young and old. Looking forward to the completion of the track to Yarra Glen and beyond.
