This road has to be the most underrated road touring experience in Australia. It has the most exhilirating scenery and many historic townships along the way. Other touring loops off the main road are also well worth exploring. A must stay place along the way is Bright.

Visit some of the old gold towns, try a pie at Swifts Creek Bakery, once known as the wood fired bakery, travel to Omeo and view some Historical Buildings, signs along Great Alpine Road in Omeo giving brief histories of some of these buildings, stay at Snug as a Bug Motel, visit the natural pool and park at the end of Creek Street in Omeo, and don’t forget the museum, it is a small one but boy is it interesting

We discovered the OMEO region a few years ago, and we are still in awe at the whole, partly undiscovered region, the winery’s at ensay and casallis offer some wines 2nd to none, the walks along the Tambo River are breathtaking, all the rivers in the region offer great fishing, and the historic towns along the great alpine road show just how life might have been, during the Gold discovery days and is still being discovered today, white water rafting on the mitta river a great challenge to those who like to live on the edge, and to travel back in time at the omeo courthouse and oriental claims is an amazing experiance, the things i like about travelling the great alpine road is that their is always somewhere to stop for the views, take in the history, theirs plenty of accomodation and eateries along the way, and if you like the snow during winter the GAR from Bairnsdale to Hotham is the easiest drive and you will always get through, we liked it that much we moved here………

The Great Alpine Road. - Offers Diversity: from the Gippsland Lakes of tranquility, Tambo River and bends, High Country Villages that feel as if they are yours alone (ed. explore and get off the beaten track), Ski fields with peaks filled with invigorating fresh air & stunning views, The Valleys full of fine wine & produce. - Offers Experiences: the locals & characters along the way make it a truly memorable experience, the natural adventure & activities. Do it today, take your time, seek and you shall find a journey full of history, heritage and happiness. I did, but you must discover the secret of the Great Alpine Road for yourself.

I live in Harrietville, a little known town along the GAR. Every person that sets foot in our little haven can’t believe they have never been here nor heard of such a beautiful place.
I want t share the beauty of the GAR with more people!

I first traveled the GAR in 1962 in the back of a ute driven by newly arrived Greek immigrants who drove the then unsealed windy road with great dash and flair! The Southern section of the road which follows the Tambo Valley won my heart forever - miles without fences, and an exciting drive! The total experience still thrills me. I never fail to relish the long gentle climb from the Gippsland Lakes up through the high country towns of Ensay, Swifts Creek and Omeo, each with its special character, and then the wonderful stretch through cattle country to the snow line. Going ‘over the top’ in any season is an adventure and to see the developments at Dinner Plain and Hotham is always interesting as a truly ‘Australian Alps Style’ emerges in the architecture. Snow in winter and short walks with long views in summer make a break at the top wothwhile before the rapid drop through Mountain Ash forest to Harrietville takes us into the Ovens Valley and its softer more cultivated landscape.
I always get a thrill out of the GAR - it has never ceased to pleasure me although I have traveled it for over forty years.
