I love the Murray region, particularly Echuca. I love the history surrounding the port with the paddle steamers and other historical activities. There are many things to do for all ages and it provides a lovely setting for a restful holiday. My best memory of Echuca is a holiday spent there with 4 other families and all of the children enjoying the many activities together.

We just love Echuca and the Murray River. In winter, the days are lovely, it is a great place to ride our bikes and the cafes in the Port of Echuca make great coffee! It is such a laid back relaxing place to be. We go there every year (at least once). We hope that the Murray is looked after by our governments so that the Murray River and all the regions that rely on it are healthy forever…and the Port of Echuca remains one of the best holiday destinations for us all.

Echuca is a great place for a family holiday. we go 3 times a year and always vist the Port. The Port area has so much to offer. the kids love to play the big Chess game outside the pub and we all love the Port tour. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and full of information about the old days. The Paddle Steamer rides always add to our holiday, we just love the Murray and what Echuca has to offer.

Echuca is always alive with the sounds of yesteryear. Paddles slapping on the water, boat hoots echoing around the huge river red gums, clip clop of horses. We take all our overseas visitors to Echuca and they love it. Our latest guest was a steam engine buff from UK and was delighted to see a tractor from his home town! The variety of food and shopping adds to the pleasure of the day.

There is something uniquly Australian about this place, you can hear the sounds of yesteryear and experience the quitness and tranquility of the area at the same time.
A couple of days is needed to let the quietness sink in and a paddleboat ride is a must to expericence the Port - its great construction is only seen from the boats and the river.

Echuca meets the whole range of needs …..from the family holiday, to the romantic getaway, to the boys/girls weekend away! There’s somthing for absolutely everyone! The kids get into the ‘olden days’ displays and riverboats. The adults enjoy going back in time and reminiscing. The romantics have gorgeous settings for snuggles and glasses of wine and breathtaking sunsets with cockies flying over, and the fat kookaburra looking on, by the river!
The boys have their fishing and speedboats and paddlesteamers, or the ‘bbq on the river boat’. The girls can get their dose of retail therapy then enjoy a cuppa by the river or a pamper at the resort… Seriously…. Echuca is the place to go!!

Stay in Echuca over the weekend it’s only about a 2 hour drive from the Calder freeway! By the way the weather in Echuca is always warmer than Melbourne even in winer and it is a proven fact that Echuca is hotter in Summer then Queensland!! :D

Possibly the best place on earth, carved out of the Aussie bush in the 1860’s and still going strong all these years later.
The Port is a restoration of the original precint - not a re-creation like many others.
I first visited in 1986 and can’t wait to get back there every chance I get.
For me personally, the whole place is HEAVEN !!!
    Keep up the good work

Echuca is a great historic link to rivertrade which opened up central Australia. It is close enough to Melbourne, a great climate, varied Tourist attractions and central to stay at to visit outer surrounding tourist spots. The Echuca Steam Rally is a fantastic link to combine on a visit to Echuca.

The Emmy Lou Paddle steamer is the most relaxing enjoyable way to spend two nights and three days traveling up and down the Murray from the Port of Echuca. The crew is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The boat is small enough to enable you to get to know the other passengers and really relax and enjoy yourself.

The Port is a great place to discover the history of Echuca. Authentic paddlesteamers maintained as they were in that great era of steam transport - PS Alexander Arbuthnot (1923), PS Pevensey (1910) and PS Adelaide (1866) the oldest wooden-hulled paddlesteamer still operating in the world today. Wander the historic wharf built in the early 1860’s and ponder on the displays and exhibits that depict the activities that at the height of the river trade made the Port of Echuca the third busiest port in Australia. Take a cruise on one of the Port’s paddlesteamers to experience river transport from a bygone era. All this and more just an easy 3 hour drive (including a drive and revive) from Melbourne. A must place to visit - we first visited in 1998 and are still going back for our regular ‘Echuca Fix’.

Every one needs to visit this beautiful historic town. You can consider leaving this amazing state without first comming to Echuca/Moama. Every week there seems to be some sort of festival, market or other activity on.Most people run out of time to see everything which keeps them comming back time and time again.
I was once only a visitor but know my family have lived here for 2years and we are the happiset we have ever been.
i encourage you to take some time out for a short break or better yet come stay awhile and enjoy our amazing town and surrounding districts!!!

My partner and I enjoy escaping to Echuca. We also enjoy the drive from Melbourne west. We enjoy a relaxing ride on a paddlesteamer for a quiet day along the picture perfect Murray, we also enjoy walking around the old buildings of Echuca. Good pubs for good meals for lunch. Of an evening, we go to the clubs for a meal and a few beers. After a great day out, we stroll back to our cosy motel for a tranquil spa in the room.

With 20 years experience as a skipper on the river Murray, each day I learn some thing new about the river or it people. One of the differences of this river is when you are away from development it could be any time in history, its timeless.
And with more replica steamers being built, 5 in the last 10 years they add to the sense of history of this region once known as” the Chicago of the south” .
Can you remember the Mars bar add featuring an iconic steamer???
