This is not only one of the greatest all inclusive cycling events in Australia but also in the world. It has a wonderful appeal and the varying distance options means that everyone can have a go and feel included.
Used to be good. Too many people makes it unsafe. Too much commercialism involved.
What a way to see around Port Phillip Bay. On your bike, with thousands of other riders, riding through some great suburbs or towns. It’s amazing what you see on a bicycle, compared to being in a car.
What could be better than a ride around our beautiful bay with thousands of other cyclists: all challenging themselves, enjoying the scenery and getting fit in the process?
Around The Bay In A Day is a great way to enjoy Melbourne. One gets to see Melbourne and surrounds at a speed that is relaxing. Bicycle Victoria organises everything including a festival at the finish and it creates a wondeful sense of achievement when complete. What better way to spend a holiday - one that promotes heath and fitness.
Around the Bay is one of Melbourne’s and Victoria’s iconic events and deserve the recognition it recieves. It has ride distances that cater for all ages and where else can you experience the delights of the bay, both pennisiullas, the CBD and experience a ferry crossing. I will definitley be recommending this event to my interstae friends so I can show off what Melbourne and regional Victoria has to offer.
I voted for this because I want to win the $1000 prize! And because it’s a great event that promotes health, fitness and participation. It’s also a great challenge to undertake with mates.
Around the Bay in a Day: the festive atmosphere; the celebration of achievement across a wide range of age and ability; the encouragement for all to have a go; the encouragement and congratulations along the way are inspirational to both riders and spectators. I tried to register last year and missed out because it is such a popular event. This year I got in early! Looking forward to the first of many!
It offers families & friends lots of options for cycling to your individual skill levels & you get to see the suburbs up close & personal in a healthy way.
Thousands of people getting active - Awesome!
I’ve ridden seven and my only regret is missing out on the years I never registered. It forces me to get fit each year, train with my cycling mates and be part of a great event. If 210km is too far then give the 100km a go this year and step up next year.
i voted for this because i have done the ride every year since 2003 and have really enjoyed it so much now my wife started the small ride now does the 100 this is her second year so thank you kevin
I’ve just started cycling, and am hooked! I’m about to sign up for my first Around the Bay ride, and can’t wait. I’ve heard so many good things about the day, including the scenery, the sense of community, and the achievement of completing the ride
. Looking forward to it!
This event brings cyclists from all areas of the sport and all areas of the community together in a celebration of this wonderful sport, our beautiful bay and the fantastic spirit that riders share. BV runs a very friendly and “well-oiled” event that is always fun to be part of.
This ride is through stunning scenery with the promotion of community awareness for people in need as well as promoting bike riding and a healthy lifestyle. Join the community to help others.
A fantastic fast, flat ride
Have now completed 6 RTBs. A great ride altough the number of entrants is now begining to stretch the capacity of the ferry trips.
Started cycling last year (training with my daughter so she could to the Breat Vic Bike Ride), but was too late to enrol in the ATB 100km last year - doing 210km this year. Great way to see a lot of Melbourne from a different perspective in the company of fellow cyclists without too much worry from other vehicles.
We, my wife and I, are in our early sixties, we were just starting social bike riding for fitness & fun when our son in law suggested entering Round The Bay in 2006.
After a bit of training (part of the Warburton Rail Trail) we tackled the 42 Km ride & had a fabulous day, riding a bike over the Westgate for the first time was amazing.
We have since done the Melbourne Summer Ride twice & Round the Bay again in 2007, we will definitely be entering again this year, we live in a beatiful Part of Australia & we are now seeing it in a very different way.
We use this as the big yearly event to train and aim for it is an inspiration to keep your fitness levels high and as part of a group of about twelve tasmanians that travel over each year we all have the one thing in common that brings us together for weekly rides that otherwise would not happen
I was pressured into riding the 100km with a friend 4 years ago. I haven’y missed one since and I look forward to the 210km each year now. It was a fantastic experience and since that first year I now now do more kms on the bike than I do in the car. Professionally run and it has gotten better every year
I have completed two rides 100 & 210 where I organised the teams, I have found the ride to be great fun as you meet all types of riders.
Can not wait for this years ride………….
It tested all riders their fitness, endurance and given riders the best view of the bay and most of all a good way to help to fund raise for theSmiths family. That’s why RTB is still the best for all levels of riders
it’s a great way to see the scenery surrounding this little town surrounding Melbourne, Mornignton and Geelong. and it’s always good to see a motoring club look at other forms of touring this state. and it’s also a friendly challenge to get around in a day before dark.
The Around the Bay in a Day event is a great adventure with lots of like minded people encouraging you along. Half way around you are treated to a good lunch, a ferry trip and more cycling! Fantastic!
It’s a great day for socialising and getting fit !
What more could you ask for.
This is with out doubt the most amazing cycling event for all levels of cyclist that is organised with in Australia. the sheer size of it is incrediable and the organisation of the event is outstanding. Our wifes who dont ride love the event as much as we do, it gives them 3 days of shopping.
Brilliant event that brings 1000s to Melbourne.
Watching the sun come up over the Westgate bridge at a pace slower than the car is a fabulous expereince and enables people to appreciate beautiful Melbourne from a different perspective. Sharing the road with all users is educative for all and demonstrates that with a little bit of thought, all forms of transport can be used together……and you get a great bit of exercise on the way through.
RTB, love it!!!!!!!!
RTB is a world class event. Great views, challenging ride and fun to do with your friends and family.
A fantastic day out and a great way to see the sights of Victoria with friends.
A great ride for the reasons outlined by other writers. Another major strength of the event is the “community ownership” of the event - volunteers, local government engagement, crowds supporting riders, the festival atmosphere at the Start/Finish line…
I have been riding in the ATB for the past five years and can truely say it provides a fabulously different experience EVERY year. I meet riders from all around Australia and some from overseas, particularly South Africa and Europe. The way the ride gets supported by both local residents and the wonderful Bicycle Vic volunteers makes this ride a truely unique experience.
Imagine if we could combine the “Tour Down Under” with ATB WOW !!!!
There is no better way to see the fabulous Port Philip Bay than on a bike, and, all in one day. How often are you able to see the bay and surrounding country come to life in the morning .The Ride takes you to places you normally would not travel too or see ,experience the freshness of being ion the city and the country and then allows you to watch the dolphins play as you cross the bay in the ferry.
To top it all off, at the end of the ride you have a wonderul feeling of achieving a very big personal goal whilst aiding a charity along the way !
Fantastic event which enables you to see the penninsula in a fun, safe, and exiciting environment
An enjoyable experience of seeing the sights of the Bay
Last October at 53 I bought my first road bike since high school, the other bikes i had were just to show the children how to crash. I did the 50km ride last October and have booked in for the 100km this year, I’ll save the 210 for next year. I now ride 2-3 times a week between 30 and 80km each time, and I have never been fitter. An absolutely GREAT event, flexible enough to cater for all fitness levels.
Fantastic event. Bicycle Victoria with all the volunteers, sponsors, the local councils all working together continue to promote and deliver a first class event. A great specticle attracting all ages shows how widespread and popular cycling really is.
RTB has got to be one of the worlds best bike rides. The training leading up to the day provided an experience that has “Hooked ” me and other friends completely. Enjoy great sights, meet wonderful people with a similar interest & it’s also a personal challenge to top off a fantastic day.
A must-do in my annual touring calendar is the Around the Bay in a Day bike ride classic.
Great bay scenery, a ferry ride across the heads, the ride over the iconic Westgate Bridge and the comraderie of 14,000 riders makes for a fantastic and favourite tour experience.
This is my 10th year and I’m really looking forward to the magic of sunrise on the bay while motoring along in a giant peleton of people from all walks of life and increasingly from all parts of the globe!
What a superb way to view the sights around Port Philip Bay…last year was my first Around the Bay ride, and I am coming back again this year. A very good reason to be in Melbourne in the spring, enjoying the festival of cycling as well as all that the city has to offer…and this is from a biased Sydneysider!
This is just a great day out and celebration of the Bay!
Whichever ride chosen from the 50,100,210 or 250k the accomplishment of setting a goal and seeing it through to completion gives you a real buzz.
It’s also not just about the day, the camaraderie and spirit built up through team participation is fantastic. riding with Monash Uni (see their web site) I’ve had the opportunity to meet and mix with many other Monash, students, staff and graduates who I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
Watching the finish of The round the Bay race last year inspired this aging and non-cycling couple, Aged 61 and 63 to purchase bicycles for Christmas , invite our friends to Sponser us 11 months in advance! and get cracking
We now cycle every Sunday and cant wait for October , no other
Event in Melbourne has had that effect on us , we found it truely inspiring to see all ages competing and wea re hooked for life!
definitely the best way to see the bay, best bike ride in Australia.
It’s a great challenge and motivator for people to get fit, look around the bay, socialise in an environmentally friendly way.
This is the best ride ever. Great people, a real sense of achievement and some of the nicest scenery along the way. BikeVic do a fantastic job of organizing it.
Around the Bay is a great challenge and an excellent fitness goal to aim for. You get to see the whole gorgeous bay area surrounded by people achieving things they never thought they would.
A great challenge for anyone, from the 50km for first timers to the 250km for the super serious. The scenery is wonderful, and if the weather is right the kilometers seem to fly by.
A great way to see bayside Melbourne.
Great way to see the sights-riding over the westgate bridge, fantastic views of the city!!
RTB is a great reason to visit and a great way to see the pensinsula — what Melbourne needs is more hillls!
My best ‘home-grown’ tour was the train to Geelong, bus to Queenscliffe, lunch, ferry ride across the bay, bus to Frankston and train home.
