This event is held in January each year in one of the most beautiful regions in Victoria. My wife and I usually travel to Bright each Christmas to train. Our highlight is to ride from Bright over Tawonga Gap to Mt Beauty for coffee and buns at the Mt Beauty bakery and then back over Tawonga Gap to Bright to relax by the river or a bubbling creek. With all the calories consumed on the training ride we can then indulge in a lovely dinner at one of the local restaurants. As physically testing as the event itself is, it is very well organised; the views as you climb the mountains are spectacular; the climate superb; the local restaurants excellent; and your hosts relaxed and cordial. This is not just a one day bike ride, it is an excellent festival long week-end.

The Alpine Classic is the only riding event in Victoria that is worthy of the “classic” moniker. It presents a genuine challenge to all event participants, whether novices or old hands. Audax do a magnificent job of organising it, while the town and countryside are as ever, beautiful.

I first did this event in 2000. From doing the event I discovered Victoria’s alpine country. The combination of a very well organised event and beautiful scenery makes this tops.

The Audax Alpine Classic is a bicycle challenge set in beautiful Bright. It is well organised and provides a fantastic atmosphere for riders to meet and socialise, before and after the event. There is a challenge level for all riders and overcoming this challenge provides a wonderful sense of achievement.

Bright and the Alpine Classic are a perfect combination. It is a great way to finsh off a January of beach, surf, sand, and the necessary ride training to tackle one of the many events held over the weekend. But please….don’t tell too many people!!

A great way to enjoy the beauty of Bright and the surrounding Alps. The place buzzes with festivity. Old and young kids delight together. Individuals achieve, families play, and friends bond. The Ovens Valley wonderful hospitality is everpresent, and landscapes revels in its human visitors.
Audax and the Alpine communities do a superb job in creating a tourism experience beyong the Alpine Classic cycling event.
    Looking forward to many more!

It is a low-emission spectacle which presents the healthy, outdoor, sporty outlook of Victorians to the outside world, in a perfect landscape setting set in a region full of classic Australian produce, including iconic wineries. The event is also international in scale and reach, providing a tourism opportunity beyond the archetypal Australian cities and coastal landmark locations.

Bright is a fantastic spot, beautiful riding and a welcoming atmosphere. My family and I are vollies for the event, which we enjoy doing and riding in the days before the event is a bonus. Hope to see you all at Falls Creek with your usual smiling faces.

It is one of the best run events I have participated in. Non event activities are organised to emblish the atmosphere of a happy French village. The ride support is the best with ample ambulances, police traffic control & food stations. Riders feel very safe riding this taxing course.
The village of Bright is a great visual background and is very supportive of the riders.
I have actually taken my family on a private holiday to Bright and Myrtilford as I enjoyed the area so much.

This event is one of he the most spectaular and challenging recreatoinal events in the world. The scenery of the apline area in the summer is truely incredible, the comaradery typically australian and the organisation remarkable. The warmth of the Bright locals top off this wonderful weekend.

it all comes together at Bright the weekend of the Alpine Classic. A town full of bikes, a challenging event for adults, and lots to do for families all in a beautiful setting. There are enough choices of distance and hills to increase the challenge year by year. And at the end you think I would like to come back to Bright and explore more. A winner all round. Thankyou Audax

Cycling is enjoying unprecedented popularity, with more bikes being sold than cars,Victoria’s great climate,Beach road and the Dandenongs being nearby Melbourne,Aussies doing well in “The tour de France”,the cost of a good quality road bike droping by half in just a few years, etc. In short “cyling is the new golf’.
The Audax alpine Classic setting is a fabulously sceenic location, allows lots of things to do for those accompanying the riders, for the riders themselves a reason to train and get very fit, and of course a challenge to ones endurance.
Besides injecting money into the local economy,it may ,perhaps,in a more tenuous way inject a new Aussie star into the “tour Down Under’ or even “the Tour de France” .

I have entered the Alpine Classic four times and believe it does two things. Firstly it is arguably the hardest single day bike event in Australia that is available to non-profgessionals. Secondly it brings significant tourism benefits to the Bright region, both financially and more importantly it helps promote this wonderful part of Australia outside of the ski season.

The Alpine Classic is an event that invites cyclists of all domains to complete a ride that provides amazing scenery, local hospitality and the comradery of fellow bike riders. No other ride can compare to the atmosphere generated by this Audax event in Australia. This event is also very entertaining to watch and provides even non riders with a spectaculor day of viewing. It is simply the best non-competitive ride in Australia.

Easy! Comraderie, Scenery, energy (defecit) boulangerie at Bright ( read raisin scrolls), a lot of agony followed by ecstasy! Bonjour bright! Not trying to be cute, but honestly a great weekend. We drove 3600 km’s round trip, rode the great ride of the Alpine Classic ( yes all 200km’s), and six months later are still talking about it. Fantastique!

We’ll be back. What a perverse sort of customer satisfaction!

A truely challenging event that brings cyclists from all over Australia together, in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, the comradrie is something that has to be experienced to be believed. (After all, if you have put yourself through the pain you apprecriate what the other riders have gone through). The organisation is exceptional and locals are very accommadating.

Highly recommended.

When I first did this ride in 1986 there were only a handful of us and we waited for each other at the top of the hills. To see the event now, superbly organised, a great day for the families that come too, it’s hard to believe that it started from such small beginnings and yet for the riders it is a tough event. Great to see so many take part!

Nothing beats the atmosphere of 2000 cyclists and their families and friends taking over Bright on Australia Day weekend. Options for all riders including one with 3000 metres of mountain climbing over 200kms. All run by volunteers, in great location.

An amazingly well-run event in a beautiful part of Victoria. Physically demanding for most of us, it presents just the right level of challenge. It is open to all and achievable for any reasonably fit rider, but it is sufficiently difficult to provide a profound and lasting sense of achievement. The bonus is the wonderful scenery and the support and encouragement of fellow riders and supporters.

I believe that the Audax is a great spectacle and a great event for participants. It provides a challenge and cameradie. To see a town full of healthy enthusiastic riders with beautiful quiet machines. little smoking, moderate drinking, eating and coffee drinking and lots of friendship and laughs without barriers of age sex money or status is refreshing. I believe that locals and visitors would agree. It also boosts the local economy.

For me, and I am sure many others, the Alpine Classic combines the pleasure of cycling with the geographical sights and pleasures of Bright and it’s surrounding mountains and valleys. A number of us regularly come to this event and spend at least a week before the ride, generally unwinding and enjoying what the area has to offer.

  77. 166 Andrew Rubins
    Jul 23rd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

I have been coming to Bright for this ride since 1993. During that time the organisation of the event has become better and better even though it has grown bigger and bigger. The event, the challenge, the scenery, the town all combine to make this a tourism event like no other. The fact that it is run by a volunteer organisation is the icing on the cake.
In 2008 the event went to the next level with the Bonjour Bright promotion. At last the local council and traders embraced the event (or started to) and acknowledged it’s draw power.
As a result of this event people come to Bright and the region for the first time. Then they keep coming back. Typically they stay for longer each time they participate and venture further afield in the region. All of which suggests it is Victoria’s best tourism event.

This is a unique national cycling event that has been going for 25 years, and brings large numbers of people (at least 5,000) into the Bright township, creating a wonderful atmosphere in town. Riders bring their families and stay a couple of days on either side of the event.

As an ultra endurance event it is unique. Over 2000 Cyclists are suported to ride 200 km over the victorian alps, and to acheive goals they might not otherwise be able to do.

The beauty of the Alpine Classic is that it, to me, represents Audax riding writ large! Brilliantly organised by welcoming, friendly people, the Alpine Classic is the ultimate Australian challenge for any recreational cyclist - you can make it as hard a ride as you like!
And if you feel the need to slow down, or even stop for while, there’s plenty of places with a beautiful view, and great people to enjoy that view with!

This is a world class “cyclosportif” event. One of the best areas in Aust to ride a bike. Great challenge. Excellent organisation by VOLUNTEERS!!. Great camaraderie. Having participated in the last four I can say with out doubt that the 2008 event, with the Bonjour Bright festivities, had the best atmosphere. Maybe it’s about time the local council gave it the substantial financial support it deserves!!

Although I am an avid cyclist and make this event my main focus for the year, my family enjoy coming up to Bright for this event too. There are great shops, cafes and a carnival atmosphere in Bright during the weekend of the Alpine Classic.

The Alpine Classic provides different challenges for differing grades of cyclist. Each year is different. I track the weather closely. Too hot and the Classic is difficult, too cold and it is too tricky! But whatever the weather, the Alpine Classic is the best way to muck around on a bike that I know. And the social dimension is peerless.

The Audax Alpine Classic is the highlight of my annual cycling calendar. I have been coming to Bright to do this ride for 15 years now. It’s beautiful and challenging at the same time. I don’t know where else I’d rather be on the Australia Day long weekend.

It is the challenge, physical and mental, that makes the Alpine Classic a truly memorable event. Riding through magnificent alpine scenery or green valleys amongst the gum trees just adds to the ambience.

The Alpine Classic is a great community event held in a beautiful area. We come down from Sydney with lots of friends as it always a fantastic weekend. We’ve even been back at other times of the year and spend time in Milawa and Beechworth as well for the wineries and food. A great reason to visit Victoria and not just a big city. Australia is slowly developing its regional areas as places worth visiting and the Bright area is amonst the very best.

The ultimate bike riding challenge in Oz. with loads of of distance options. On the Oz day weekend. In beautiful Bright. With my family and friends. Wonderful memories of time with family picking blueberries then swim the dredge hole, then yummy ice cream all at Harrietville. Amazing country vistas casually dinning with friends at the ever so layed back Wandilligong Hotel. Watching my girls laugh, play and learn to ride with out traing wheels at the Bright Caravan park. The challenge of riding to the top of Buffalo, Falls and Tawonga gap then after some 10- hrs recieve so much genuine applause for finishing 3 1/2 hr after the 1st rider home. The support is enormous all day and especially at the finish when the last riding home is the one who deservedly gets the biggest cheers. Completing this ride has been one of my greatest achievements in life. I’ll get back there again for sure but maybe for a shorter ride next time.

Australia’s best scenery, challenging climbs and super descents, this one has it all. Most people just dream of doing it - when you get around to it you realise just how great cycling is in the high country. As they say, you have to be nuts to do it - but you’d be crazy if you didn’t.

The catalyst to the event was the 70+year old who rides his bike from Adelaide, competes in the 210k event and rides home again.
This is surely indicative of the premium event the Alpine Classic is.
And it is- and for all the reasons we all know who participate in it and our families who come and soak up the inspiring and memorable atmosphere.

The annual Alpine Classic is not just any ordinary event. Here we have the beauty of Bright with it’s surrounding areas, a series of cycle events that have an atmosphere unique to itself anywhere in Australia, with people of all ages & fitness levels, competing against no-one but themselves, & the elements of the district. The hills, the beauty around you, the camaraderie of your fellow road-sharers, & the joy when you make it to Mount Beauty, Falls Creek, or Mount Buffalo & back to Bright. Even those who don’t finish on their own steam never forget the experience. Then there’s more. Music all afternoon into the evening for those at the formal sit-down dinner, or just picnicking on the lawns. The cycle enthusiasts, the friends who came along as supporters, the locals, the birds, the fish…..
It might be a cycling weekend, but it’s a whole lot more. I’ve been 3 times now, cycled once, and made it. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.

The event caters for a wide range of people both riders and non-riders. For the riders the scenic terrain , the organisational support, the soaring spirit of the volunteers, the camaraderie among the riders themselves, and the location combine to make a unique experience.

For the non-riders Bright and surrounds offers its own experiences including great food and wine, walks, vistas and best of all that same soaring spirit among the locals.

Back in 2009 and can’t wait.

This is a stunning area to ride in, and the event is the best run event I have entered. It is not-for-profit, run by passionate people, and has a friendly, supportive and festive feel about it. The only thing that could be a problem with this event is if it gets too big, which is a risk because it is that good.

This ride is a lift for the body and spirit. At 63 years of age I make the Alpine Classic Falls Creek ride my reason for training for many months before. My training rides up Donna Buang in the early spring are always enjoyable in retrospect, but would not happen without the focus of the next Alpine Classic. It is the only cycling event I enter for the year. I have been riding it for ten years and have now got the whole family involved. Last year my son-in-law rode too and my wife has always ridden the Buffalo leg and sometimes Falls Ck too. It is nice to have the grandkids there too and I hope to have them riding this beautiful event when they are old enough. The organisation is superb, the country looks and smells absolutely beautiful (you can’t smell the country from the car!) and the town of Bright is a pleasure to visit.

The Audax Alpine classic and all Audax bicycle rides keep my old man alive so that he can be with me when I grow up. Also he loves Audax because the Audax people are so nice, helpful and not political, he says it’s totally different to the German Shepherd Dog Club. Bright is a beautiful place and the Alpine Classic is one of the best mountain endurence events in Australia. Like all Audax events the Alpine is very well planned and executed.

Nothing says Australia day more than Bonjour Bright!
A fantastic weekend full of great food, entertainment and a dirty great big freakin hill to ride up. Makes the beers afterwards at the Bright brewery taste so much sweeter. The only negative I could possibly think of would be trying to organise accomodations any closer than 6 months in. Its the sirt of ride that makes you swear to never do again…until you are checking out and find yourself compulsory booking your spot next year with teh desk clerk. A ride to do at least once in your lifetime (if you can stop at once)

As an avid cyclist this is the ultimate challenge for me. I’m not a very good climber (slow but steady) so I’ve embarked on a 3 year plan to conquer this great cycling event. In 2008 I climbed Mt Buffalo and it was awesome. I completed the 70kms inside 3.5 hours and now will attempt the Falls Creek option in 2009. If I complete that successfully I will attempt the full ride on my 60th birthday. My birthday falls on or around the day of the Alpine Classic each year. It’s a great weekend in Bright and I recommend it to anyone who is passionate about their cycling as much as I am.

I voted for the Audax Alpine Classic as unlike other commercially run cycling events, this is run by a cycling club and staffed by volunteers.

The event has a feel unlike any other that I have participated in and the township of Bright embraces the event for the entire weekend.

To top it off, the event itself is monumentally tough, giving all those that complete the course a shared sense of purpose. Participants stay in the area rather than “cutting and running” as seems to be the case in similar events.

It is fantastic and I will be back next year for sure.

I have participated in plenty of organised cycling events all around Australia and have arranged many such events myself. This was without a doubt the most well run cycling event I have ever personally participated in.

A very arduous ride in what can be extreme conditions was easily offset by the efficiency from start to finish, willingness of the volunteers and outstanding organisation of the entire day. A fantastic effort by people who often disappear into the background to what can appear a thankless task. So for me, on behalf of those arranging the event, I say well done!

It’s a tough ride but well worth it for the experience and support of all involved. Bright is a gorgeous town and participants and their support teams and families are all well catered for with plenty of events to keep everyone happy.

I’m sorry James Steward (#47) but it’s not as tough as TdF. I tried Mont Ventoux last year and that, one climb, was tougher. But make no mistake The Classic is more than tough enough to be on your “must do before you die” list, and you’ll feel close to it at times, as you know. I endorse everybody’s comments about effort, scenery and organisation. This year was my first and I, think I’ll be silly enough to have another go next year. Maybe even stay on for a few days, check out some wineries and other local attractions and maybe ride the railway trail back to Wangaratta, ‘cos we never know when we’ve had enough, do we?

Climbing several mountains and riding long distances on a bike may not sound like much of a holiday, but people (like myself) keep coming back. A sure testimony to the great atmosphere and organisation of this event. As said by others, a great advertisement for sustainable and healthy tourism.

The event is extremely well organised in a fantastic setting and environment.

Most participants make this an annual week end event involving their families, who are catered for in terms of activities other than cycling.

I voted for this event as a spouse of a rider. The kids and I look forward to this weekend as a great end to the summer holidays and love the extra things that go on for everyone on this weekend. A great way to finish summer before heading back to school and work.

This is my all-time favourite annual cycling pilgrimage. The whole weekend in Bright has a festival atmosphere that revolves around non-competitive cycling and the event organisation is first-class. I’ve completed 8 Alpine Classics, and now combine the epic ride with a week-long family holiday.

The Alpine Classic combines tourism with good health, with long-lasting effects. Training takes several months, the long weekend is brilliant fun, the ride is demanding, well-organised, scenic and satisfying, and the stories told afterwards result in more people signing up for next year.

I have been down to do the Alpine Classic for the past three years and will continue to do it for as long as I can keep the pedals turning. Bright, and the surrounding areas, are just wonderful places for cycling. The Audax people do a fantastic job in organizing it and the townspeople support it with enthusiasm.

A great non-competitive, brilliantly supported event that engages participants not only with the bitumen and the hills, but also with the communities they pass through. It’s hard to imagine a region better suited to this type of event, or to just kick back and enjoy all that’s on offer locally. The longer rides are a challenge for the day, but the practice required is itself enjoyable and has longer-term benefits.

The Alpine is the best organised cycling event in Australia. It is held in an amazing region that has lots to offer both the cyclists and those accompanying them on the adventure, making for family harmony. All in all, a great way to spend a weekend.

I have entered this event every year for the past five or six years. My partner, friends and family travel to Bright each January to take part in this major regional event. We enjoy the whole scene, including cycling the mountains, enjoying the food and the sun. My parents love watching the lycra clad cyclists and often wish they were young and fit enough to take part in the cycling event. Last year we attended the special french theme dinner, where we could exchange stories about how successful or otherwise we were. We love it and look forward to it every year.

I found my first Alpine Classic this year to be personally challenging and exciting to be a part of a non competitive event in such a beautiful part of Victoria which I had never experienced before in the Summer months. The community feeling was such a buzz. It was an eye opening experience with my family cheering me on, we will be aiming to get up there for every year from now on.

The full 200km event, I’m sure is as tough as any stage of Le Tour. 4 mountain passes in one day. If only I could do it with the legs of a climber like Richard Virenque!

I have participated in this event since 2001 and have found that it has consistently improved in its organisation year after year. The 2008 event was by far the best especially with the French theme and the location in Bright was excellent.

I congratulate Phil Bellette and his team of volunteers for making this years event the most memorable and best organised I have been in for any cycling event around the world. Well done Phil!

Riding in the Alpine Classic is one of the toughest challenges a cyclist can set him- or herself. Because the Classic is held in such superb mountain country the effort required does not seem so demanding. The reward of time spent in the shady riverside park at Bright is a great way to celebrate the achievements.

This is Australia’s best one day classic wrapped up in a very special long weekend within the mountain valley of Bright. But Beware, rolling into Bright in the late afternoon, after a hard day in the saddle to the cheers and a waiting Rutherglen Red could cause irrepairable long term addictions.

A cycling event through Victoria’s most beautiful and scenic mountain area.
The expertise and attention displayed by Audax Australia to the organisation and running of the event makes this the top cycling event in Australia with high level of safety for cyclists and motorists alike.

It is no wonder that many cyclists return to participate in the event year after year.

I have been to this event as a tourist and as a rider! Last year was the best ever with a French theme and with Bright overflowing with beret wearing cyclists sipping wine, nibbling cheese and devouring criossants, it was just sensational. Right down to the gendarmes at he start and finish or the ride.
Great family fun food and festivity!

A cycling event held Australia Day weekend in Bright. It attracts in excess of 2000 cyclists plus families , flooding Bright and district with approx 6000 visitors.
The ride has been held for the past 20 years the main ride is Tawonga Gap both ways, up Falls Creek then Mt Buffalo a total of 200K there are also 4 shorter rides plus a Bonjour Bright Festival.
    Audax cycling is French/Italian origin.

It’s on a hot afternoon in January, you’re peddling up Mount Buffalo and pushing yourself beyond the limit. Around a corner is green astroturf with cyclists collapsed and prone, on it. Next to it is a massive water tanker and a bloke with with a water spray hosing down a fellow rider whilst another is filling a rider’s water bottles for him.

Obviously you are hallucinating - no it’s reality! The man with the spray is on of the many Audax volunteers giving their time to look after you. It doesn’t matter to them that you are cyclist 1023 they have seen today, its always a smile and a quick query on how you’re traveling. This epitomises the spirit this ride is run in.

The Alpine is now one of the biggest events in North-East Victoria and the number of visitors the ride brings into the area is significant. The food options in Bright and surrounds are fantastic and nothing beats an evening in Simone’s talking war stories post ride whilst the river front area is a wonderful environment for the whole family to relax in. The long weekend allows you wander back through the local communities. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Bright is a fantastic place at anytime but the excitement, the cyclists whizzing here and there, and the general buz when the Audax Alpine Clasic is on makes this event all the better. From the participating cyclists’ view they have a well organised challenging ride. From the non-participants view there’s plenty to do. A big Thumbs Up from me.

My non-cycling hubby volunteered and actually said he had a great time meeting and talking to cyclists - not a normal task for him! He loved it so much he was telling others at the dinner that he would defnitely volunteer again next year.

One of the most challenging, yet enjoyable and friendly rides I’ve done. It’s always very well organised, and the countryside is spectacular. It’s been the background reason for an annual get-together of our family and friends for the past 7 years. As well as the 210-km ride, there are other shorter, less challenging but equally enjoyable rides to be had as part of the same event.
I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a fun challenge.

It’s Not (just) About the Bike.*…
The Alpine Classic is an event that brings a feel of the European amateur cycle classics to Australia. The event organisers, along with the shire council and local traders association, have combined their strengths to create a brilliant weekend of cycling, food, and festivities . All of this to celebrate the amateur cyclists who pit themselves against these grueling mountain climbs. No frist prize, no podium glory, the only aim to set or better a personal best. Allez Allez, Vive le vélo!

This is the best bike ride in Australia in the most beautiful mountain scenery. It is not for the faint hearted so as a challenging ride you get a great sense of achievement on completion. The organisers are riders themselves as are the volunteers around the route who provide an incredible level of moral support and pratical advice along with really fresh nutritional food at the controal points to sustain you for the ride. The festival atmosphere created in Bright over the weekend by the organisers makes you feel like you are at one of the famous European cycling events such as the Tour De France. This event outclasses similar events like the Great Vic Bike Ride and the Around the Bay in a Day by a country mile and I would reckon injects over a million dollars in the local community - something that needs to happen to keep our rural communities alive and vibrant.
