Castlemaine is a terrific holiday destination all year! It has everything - extensive goldfield relic sites, glorious countryside (my favourites - a picnic on the top of Mt Alexander or by the water race at Golden Point), excellent food and wines, a great regional gallery and fascinating museums, beautiful parks and gardens, fine historic buildings, a fabulous arts scene, interesting events, Australia’s oldest continuously-operated theatre/cinema,and a warm and welcoming community. All complemented by the range of charming and interesting small towns nearby - Maldon, Newstead, Chewton, Fryerstown and so on.
Am I ibiased? Absolutely. I lived there for 15 years, holidayed there recently, and want to go ‘home’!
