My partner and I drove down the Great Ocean Road all the way to Port Campbell last weekend, and the views are stunning! Around every turn the magnificent coast can be seen. Suddenly you start driving through the bush, and before you know it the coast comes out of nowhere. A must see!

It has always been my No 1 recommendation for anyone visiting Victoria.
Living at the Geelong ending I am stunned when locals don’t even think of taking their visitors down it.
Being well travelled there are only one or two drive like this in the world, with great food to boot!

The Great Ocean Road is a great drive. The scenery all along it is superb. All the towns are lovely. Each town is different but each has their own unique style. The road itself is a good road to drive on and all items of interest are marked clearly. The best

The scenery always changes, but is the same. Every drive along the Great Ocean Road is different and there are so many things to see, from the sear rock walls, to the mist over Apollo Bay, or the ever changing sea. Its just breath taking!

We have travelled the great Ocean Road many times. Even when the kids were little and throwing up!
The wondrous views continue to draw the eyes to that beautiful coastline. Colours constantly change.
The little Townships along the way provide great stop-over nooks and places of interest.
Never tire of driving along this spectacular coastline.

My wife and I have traveled this road once before on a holiday we had to Melbourne back in 2003. It was one of the most scenic and pituresque drives we have had. To see the 12 Apostles was a major highlight of the trip. We would recommend it very highly to anyone who are thinking of the drive.

We did this trip on our 12th wedding anniversay. At first we were not going to stop at every look-out thinking they would all be the same. To our suprise and delight every one of them was uniquely different. We were gob-smacked at the beauty of them all. Seeing the sheer size of the cliff faces and the thundering waves was a very humbling experience. It was also a nice opportunity to befriend people from all over the world as we often met up with the same people at each stop. We had the nicest lunch at Apollo Bay in this lovely upstairs cafe` looking out over the water. Everythink about the trip was just so special. I recommend it as a must see for anyone who loves the beauty of creation.

I voted for the Great Ocean Road. Seeing the 12 apostles when I was young was a magnificent site. Mum told us the story about the sailor and the passenger climbing the cliffs after the ship ran on the rocks. So the memory of seeing that has stayed in my memory. I can’t wait to share this beautiful part of Victoria with my own children

The views are so outstanding, my family have been on that road so many times, and it never gets boring, so much to admire. This is a must for all drivers and their families, if you haven’t as yet, then put it on your next travelling list. Something which should not be missed.

It was an immense pleasure while I was driving from Warnambool to Port Cambell (twelve epistle). The scenic beauty and natural craft work at twelve epistle and memorial bay given me an enormous joy. It took millions of years to amke this natural craftwork for wind and water and I am the witness of these. It also given me great happiness.

Not only is the Great Ocean Road a beautiful drive with wonderful scenery and marvellous attractions, I can’t help thinking back to when it was built, and all the hard work by hundreds of men. It also brings back memories of my father, from a photo taken in 1946 of him and his mates riding their motorcycles along this fabulous road.

During the winter, with the waves lapping the shoreline and the wind howling is fantastic. There are many stops to be made along the Great Ocean Road with inlets and historical plagues with information telling you about the trials and tribulations endured to get there.
Fascinating for all young and old
Enjoy it in a day or take your time and make it a touring holiday.

    Jul 12th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

My husband and I ventured along this road and we must have been travelling with our jaws dragging along the roadside. Port Campbell and Port Fairy were our favourite. TThe scenery was great as were the people in all places we stopped for the night. Living just 5 minutes from the Hazelwood power station it was a privilidge and a dream when our kids chipped in for a spell away from our home. we have been away from our home 5 times now in the 29 years we’ve lived in Yinnar. I didn’t know that the Great ocean road was home to such splendour, the shows on Tv never really do it justice. The area just past the Apostles is spectacular, it reminded me of cakes with icing sugar dripping down the sides.(yep, I do have a sweet tooth.) Apollo Bay is perfect for a romantic getaway, the jetty or pier with the fantastic carvings on the foreshore are wonderful to stroll along before having dinner and wine in one of the pubs there. What more could an old chook like me wish for. Yep it was spectacular and awe inspiring at the same time; a change from the open cut in our area.

The Great Ocean Road coastline is a NATURAL WONDER! We visit every year and always marvel at the views. We always impress our international visitors (family and friends) when we take them along the magnificent Great Ocean Road. We know this because when we’ve visited them, they have many framed (enlarged) photographs of our scenic coastline, the Apostoles, etc. on their walls and they rave about it being the best! Such compliments!!!

A beautiful scenic drive showcasing the rugged coastline and incorporated with the historic towns and museums gives a great insight into the hardships experienced by our first settlers. It shows parts of Australia with amazing historical stories at each place you stop. The views of the beach and the surrounding landscape are spectacular, with the windy road fun or if your my wife scary to drive along. Every trip is an exciting memory for me.

Just the greatest drive and scenery i’ve enjoyed - many times. And after cruising the coast, can’t do better than to stop at possibly the most picturesque beach anywhere, at Pt Addis, have a wander along the beach taking in more spectacular views, until I can get the gear off, get a sandy bum, then cool off in the surf. Everyone I’ve taken there loves it.

Drove the road in April with family, the sites were amazing. The helicopter flight over the Twelve Apostles was the highlight for my wife, daughter & son. Our stay in Warrnambool was great a convenient location for day trips to Port Fairy and other places.

The Great Ocean Road is truly one of the worlds greatest war memorials, which should be travelled by every Australian.

After meeting my boyfirend’s family in Warrnambool, we took the Great Ocean Road home to Melbourne - what a beautiful drive, even though the weather was drizzly and overcast, we had a wonderful time and stopped for lunch on the way. We had hired a car which made the experience even better! (2008 Aldi) I highly recommend it to everyone - especially for those who are lucky enough to have it in their own backyard!!

The Great Ocean Rd is so beautiful from go to woe that you have to take your time and stop in most Ports. Being able to wake to the sound of the waves was the best sleep we all got although we live near the bay. You must see it as a driver and a passenger and make time to stop at all the carparks even the ones that arn’t signed, you don’t know what you’ll find. The only thing that we found upsetting was the way the Forest/Ranges were being cut down. But its a must for all young and old. Try it you’ll keep going back and each time you do you’ll find something new again…

Every time I drive down the Great Ocean Road , I feel my spirit lifted by the magnificant scenery and magical glitter of the ocean waves on a sunny day - I feel as if I am being transformed into another world that is almost unreal - if I could fly I would sore over the magestic and heavently arched curls and follow their path to the shore.

I have taken several international visitors down the Great Ocean Road over a period of time. It never ceases to amaze me - every time being totally different due to the weather and the oceans. You can experience 4 seasons whilst viewing the apostles. The most asked questions from the visitors - “I thought there were 12″. On our most recent trip we stopped at Wye River for a drink at the pub right on the beach, spotted koalas in the trees as we drove along, visited Lochardt George with the waves thundering through the opening and enjoyed afternoon tea at Port Campbell making our Scottish visitors feel most welcome due to the English feel. We completed our journey with an enjoyable and memorable stay at the quaint little fishing village of Port Fairy - a definite favourite of our family as a result of many an enjoyable long weekend spent at the Music Festival. I never tire of visiting this part of Victoria.

And I still have not seen much of it, as there is still so much more.

The Great Ocean Rd is a fantastic, scenic drive, with so much to see and do along the way. Whenever I drive on it, I always marvel at the work of the 3000 returned World War I servicemen who built it as a memorial to the diggers who were killed at war. We had family visiting from Hong Kong recently and they were astounded by the beauty and gorgeous scenery along the way. One family member was astounded when the family stopped for a picnic in a picnic ground overlooking the ocean, it was the first time she had ever walked on grass!

I have driven on the Great Ocean Road dozens of time over the last 20 years when I owned a timeshare week at Lorne (The Cumberland). Unfortunately we owners were bought out involuntarily by CBUS (Construction & Building Union Superannuation) fund who obtained a controlling interest of the developer David Marriner, so I have not driven down there for 3 years. That said, it is a great trip but just be careful of you are driving into the sun as the route is both beautiful and winding. Drive west after dawn and drive east after lunch time is best. The inland route from Geelong thought farm land and then over the mountain forest and down into Lorne is a good trip too.

When our friends and family visit from overseas I am besides myself with the excitement of taking them on a Great Ocean Road discovery. Going to all of the usual stops and then taking in few new ones each trip and six years later there are still plenty of places I want to see on that stunning drive. I love watching our friends faces as we round another corner are follow some steps to a breathtaking beach or waterfall. I never fail to be amazed at Loch Ard Gorge’s power how it flicks between the deafening silence of a waning wave and heart pounding rush of an incoming tide. From lattes on in Lorne to canoeing the Glenelg.. from start to finish, I never want it to end.

Having travelled this road many times whilst on my way to visit Mt Gambier, (relatives & friends), the sea is ever changing and always amazes me how powerful and vast it is. Always wonderful to see what is around the next corner and absolutely love the different landscapes that will suddenly appear, as well as wondering what side of the road the next car will be on!!

The best Vic ‘must-do’. When I lived in Melbourne I worked with someone who had never been along the GOR despite having lived in Melb his whole life. My advice to him was to take a weekend, or more, and discover it for himself. He didn’t take that advice. Shame really, he’s missing out.

Why I believe that the Great Ocean is aptly named:

    G is for glorious, the vistas we behold;
R is for rugged cliffs, that are ever so bold
E is for experience, Mother Nature’s own beauty
A is for aesthetic, it’s all so appealing!
T is for tour, the towns histories revealing…

O is for ocean, as far as can be seen
C is for delicious cuisines, just fit for a queen
E is for equilibrium of nature and spirit
A is for activities, plenty to see and do
N is for neighbourly, locals whom welcome you

R is for relaxing, an escape from life’s stresses
O is for opulence, lovely cottages and houses
A is for adventures, great times you will spend
D is for a delightful drive from start to end.

he still talks of bells beach and those kwool scate parks at lorne and woornambool, he wants to do the trip again these holidays this time taking a mate. i am on a winner

The Great Ocean Road has to be one of the most spectacular scenic drives and takes in beach, rivers, rainforests, wildlife and historic towns. This leisurely drive can be done in a day, or take your time and stay overnight at one of the many bed & breakfasts on offer.

My first experience of travelling the Great Ocean Road as an adult, was on the back of my father’s motorcycle. There is nothing like gliding through the corners of that cliff-clinging road on a two-wheeled vehicle.
With endless ocean views around Lorne and Apollo Bay, and the tender scents of the Ottway forests, I truly believe the Great Ocean Road is the most beautiful part of Australia.

And if you do go by motorbike - make sure you stop at the Arab cafe in Lorne! It’s the perfect place to chat with other riders, and check out what they’re riding!

I have recently re-driven the Great Ocean Road, and I feel that it is one of the most soothing, beautiful drives anywhere.
It is a lovely scenic drive with things for everyone - the see (and occassionally whale watching) the cliffs, the small towns for stops, B&Bs for weekends away, the trails for walking etc - how can anything compete with this.

Last year I spend a couple of months in Europe and whilst it was stunning in places it didnt make me feel how I feel when I make the trip along this great road of ours.

When I moved back to Australia from NZ in 2003, I was so keen to see the Great Ocean Road. In the first 12mths, we drove along it, at least 3 times!! I have seen some amazing scenery in the many countries incuding Australia, this rates one of the Best!! As it nears Campbells Bay,the scenery becomes more breathtaking, mixed with the Wonderful History of how this Road was made & by whom it was made, Our Legendry DIGGERS!!!

After living in the region until moving out of home at 22 it The great Ocean Road was on your doorstep but taken for granted it was always there. After travelling this icon and seeing Mother nature’s painting in the flesh, the realizeation that the rugginess is so real and breathtaking beautiful, i was taken aback .
Then my accomodation booking at the so famous ‘Glenample property’ was everything I dream of so quiet and relaxing sharing a little bit of a working farm on the edge of the coast , with the infamous Homestead still standing as if it’s story was still keeping it alive
The whole of the eastern side of the Great Ocean Road was magic but the stacks of the 12 Apostles and the carving of all the features at the Port Campbell National parK are the special ending to a wonderful experience.

After ww1′ the Goverment of the day’ set the return soldiers an impossible task of creating a road on the coast line.It was not thought they could do this by hand with the meager equiptment that wasavaible in 1919.eg pick, shovel, horse scoup, with the occassionally dymonite.
These men had saved our country by their determation -blood -guts and sweat, .therefore they were not going to be overcome by this task.
Work was scarce and ecomonic times were tough. These men needed to be occuppied and work together to a goal, was a great psyicological advantage even though the pay was small .
The Great Ocean Road has tremendous charactor, beauty and charm. It doesn;t matter what the season or what the weather throws at you; that special beauty of oceanviews and salty fresh air we breath. The cliffs with there unique vegitation will be in our memories for ever
I know when I think of this magmificiant drive “those return soldiers have really left us a senic drive to remember as well as saving our beautiful Austratia

A historic and spectacularly breathtaking scenic drive along the Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Wye River. Experience exceptional sandy family beaches in Anglesea and Lorne, patrolled in summer, or choose a world class surf beach such as Bell’s Beach as your base for a delightful summer break. Lorne has a wide array of accommodation to suit everyone’s requirements, eateries and tea houses, plentiful shopping experiences, nightlife, and festivals such as Falls Festival over the New Year’s break. A definite must-see. Lemonade Creek Cottages was our base for the summer break, and was exceptional boutique-style accommodation. Highly recommended.

The coast road, the hinterland near Lavers Hill and Johanna and the Otways makes this area of Victoria spectacular. I have been visiting this part of Victoria for almost 30 years and it remains one of the best parts of the world in my view. It changes all the time. It is amazing on a beautiful sunny day and breathtaking on a grey day when the wind whips up from the Antarctic and you are surrounded by the force of nature.

I recently have had the pleasure of doing the great ocean road for the first time. While my son (who lives overseas) came for a visit we went to visit an Aunite of my husbands in Portland and we live near Shepparton. What stunning scenery we have in this great state of ours. My daughter in law (who is Canadian) thought it was breathtaking. And being able to enjoy it with my 2 gransons made it all that much more magical. As you know pictures can never do justice and the smell of the ocean and the wind blowing though your hiar just make it amazing! So not only was it an eye opening experience for me it was also a trip for the heart.

Everytime we have guests from overseas/interstate over, we take them down the great ocean road because it’s the most beautiful part of our state and who could forget it. They never fail to be amazed at their surroundings.

I love being a Victorian! It’s the most beautiful scenic stretch of road that curves and bends its way around our gorgeous coast! Who wouldn’t pack up their car for the weekend and turn their back on the city when the great ocean road has so much to offer!

Firstly, it is simply a brilliant drive. After that the scenery is spectacular, but so often contrasting - picture postard blue ocean and sky, to frightening, storm-ravaged with spray from the breakers pouring over the cliff tops.

To drive along the Great Ocean Road is the road trip in the world! No where else in the world will you find a road that is as well made and maintained with views that are as unspoilt as that one! Stopping off at the different towns along the way (particularly Lorne) is also a highlight of the journey

The Great Ocean Road is a magnificent coast line experience. Drive slowly and visit all the viewing areas until you reach Port Campbell, stay overnight and return the next day to visit those sites you missed or re-visit the popular views.
Take the camera and enjoy the experience again and again. Truly one of the best areas I have ever seen.

We spent the best week meandering down this fabulous coastline in January - the rugged cliffs, spectacular views and forests were amazing. Our highlights were walking thru the rainforest, taking the long walk up to Teddys lookout, the awesome Apostles and enjoying a sunset beverage at the Wye River pub. We wish we’d had more time but it just means we will have to go back again!

The Great Ocean Road has many beautiful places to see but my favourite are Marriners Lookout, Maits Rest, the Glow worms near Apollo Bay,Loch Ard Gorge, Cape Otway Lighthouse with its magnificent views. Inland a little the Stevenson Falls and camping ground are just so peaceful and beautiful, also Triplet, Hopetoun and Beauchamp Falls are very worthwhile visiting. Every trip has been enjoyed down there over the past 30 years.

The Great Ocean Road is a breathtaking experience and should be explored. My favourite place is Port Campbell and the 12 Apostles. These icons of nature are slowly weathering away but leaves one in awe of natures capabilities. I can sit for hours and watch the majestic sea wash into the rock faces and sculpt the coastline. Its a absolute must for tourist to explore this fantastic coastline, great towns to visit along the way, relaxing and enjoying nature at its very best.

Great Ocean Road has something to suit everyone. The scenic drive is beautiful and great to enjoy for everyone and the boys generally love the windy drive through it. At the end of either side of the Great Ocean Road, there’s plenty of things to amuse and entertain, heaps of places to dine, lovely beaches to relax by. It’s the place for tourist and locals to enjoy.

I have seen it change from a “Surfies Road” to one the great trourist “must dos” when in Victoria. You feel like you are almost driving on the ocean (surfing in a car!) and the roadside lookouts provide a safe opportunity for the driver to also enjoy the vistas. It is a road that must be travelled in all seasons to appreciate the magnitude of the job done by it’s constructors.

I used to do this drive 3 or 4 times a year. I have lived in Qld for 11 years now and miss that part of Victoria enormousy. I regularly stayed at Torquay and Lorne and as a teenager and into my 20’s always went to Bells Beach. I recently had family over to Australia from the UK and this was the first place I suggested they go as I knew they’d love it - which indeed they did. When I go back to Victoria I always try to get over to the Great Ocean Road as, I do believe, it’s in my blood.

What a privilege we have to live in this wonderous country- so many wonderful and beautiful places to explore and experience. Top of the list would have to be time spent along the Great Ocean Road. No matter your mobility level, your statis of senses, or your language, there is something to bring delight to them all.
If you have not had this sensual pleasure, then do yourself an extremely great service and make this a must do on your list of to do’s.
We have travelled overseas, but feel blessed to be able to come back time and again to such a wonderous area. It seems the businesses and the folk of this stretch of country recognise their responsibility to each of us and engender what this area of our country is all about - breathtaking scenery, first hand experiences with Australian wildlife, flora and fauna, and not least the people that nurture and care for this spectacular region.
It’s worth everything to experience this place- it brings a realisation of what is important in one’s life-experiencing something that we as individuals had no part in preparing. Our utmost thanks should go to those that laboured long to bring us contact with this award winning experience. Enjoy your time in such a place.

Before relocating to Victoria from WA, I had heard so much about Bells Beach and watched most of the earlier surf movies showing Bells with 30 foot waves so, one week after arriving in Victoria, I drove to Bells! No 30 foot waves (unfortunately), but I fell in love with the coastline. Given that the South West of WA coastline is a beauty to behold it says a lot about the Great Ocean Road coastline! I guess the beauty isn’t just in the powerful rolling ocean, the small bays, rocks and the scenic, winding road, the Ottways on the other side of the road add a richness lacking in most coastal terraines and add something extra and special to the drive along The Great Ocean Road. Fabulous and unobtrusive coffee shops and art galleries along the way also make for a very pleasant day’s drive or weekend away.

The great Ocean Road drive means many things to me.
It is the first place I think of to take visiting friends who are tourists if they have a day to spare. It has never let me down in impressing them. I’ve pointed out whales, koalas, the apostles (that haven’t been twelve for some time!) I’ve sat on the Apollo Bay foreshore and watched 12 big red ducati motorbikes pull out of the service station, I’ve camped in Marengo as a teenager, Ive stayed in numerous cabins as an adult, Ive told stories about how many convicts died building it! (so many times I’m not even sure if they’re true anymore.) I’m a ‘city kid’ , so everytime I drive under the big wooden sign across the road that tells me I’ve made it to the “GREAT OCEAN ROAD” I still have to throw my arms in the air and go “wooooohhoooo”. Even now as a ‘grown up’. :-D

The great ocean road is one of the most beautiful road trips to take, particularly if you take some time out to stop off for a night or two in some of the gorgeous little coastal towns and villages along the way from where you get on near Geelong all the way to Port Fairy. Beautiful Lorne with wonderful accommodation, restaurants, boutique shops and beach scenery, quaint and relaxed Apollo Bay with amazing sunsets, good eateries and coffee, where you can also head inland and take in the breathtaking sights of the Otway Ranges, including the famous “Otway Fly’ and views across the spectacular mountain ranges and cliffs to the rolling ocean, then on to Port Campbell to view nature’s masterpiece of the ‘12 Apostles’
and to Port Fairy for a wander along it’s beautiful boat harbour or a stay in one of its many historic B&B’s. Mix it up with beach and bush walks, waterfalls, good food in a variety of restaurants, pubs & cafes and relax at sunset with a drink while watching the sky change through amazing hues of orange and red as though an artist has just swept his paintbrush across the horizon. Its a memorable experience and even if you can’t take a few days to stop off, a day’s drive along the coast and back will not leave you disappointed. One of my favourite getaways.

When I think of the perfect Victorian getaway I automatically think of the Great Ocean Road. Whenever we have visitors staying with us whether they come from interstate or from overseas, it’s the first destination we take them to.

The Great Ocean Rd allows you to experience the beauty of Victoria while travelling by the sea as well as the culture of our state by staying at Lorne, Apollo Bay or Warrnambool just to mention a few.

I just love the Great Ocean Road. Driving this road brings a feeling of tranquility and peace. Every corner gives a view of natures splendour and then on the next corner another view even better. I love stopping in the small towns on the way to look around and enjoy the calm. Taking photos and shopping. Have stayed at The Lorne Hotel on several times and enjoyed the experience. So much to do, or not, if that takes your fancy. I love it in the Winter and The Summer. A great place for walks or sitting by the fire with a nice wine. I find the people super friendly and helpful. I JUST LOVE IT. I have and will keep coming back to the Great Ocean road.

It would have to be the most picturesque drive in the world, even when compared to the drive along the French Rivieria, past Monaco. It is the gateway to some of the most pristine beaches, not to mention some of the most beautiful coastal towns imaginable - nothing better!

We have lots of overseas visitors and we always take them along Great Ocean road to the Apostles. We make various stops along the way and whatever the weather conditions it is always an awesome trip. We stay overnight then drive back through the Ottways. The Great Ocean Road shows us stark beauty and the fercocity that gives it the name the Shipwreck Coast. To its sandy beaches such as Apollo Bay to its rocky coast it is a great place to unwind and enjoy one of the best Victoria has to offer.

The Great Ocean Road would have to be the worlds 8th natural wonder. The scenic drive covers both land and sea views.
The Appostles are a sight that needs to be seen by all Victorian’s to take in the beauty of mother nature.
The wild life from koala’s to whales is a must see experince. The towns along the way are inviting and cosmopolitan.

The magnificence of the landscape is overwhelming. To think the ocean has carved the beautiflul cliff faces we saw is almost unbeleivable. We really enjoyes the Otway Fly Walk as well. Sometimes a day or two like this put everything back in perspective and we re-assess our lives.

This journey invites you to explore where the power of the southern ocean greets the rugged escarpment and ancient rock formation. Momentarily you are welcomed to the many small and larger hamlets that are perched along the journey to allow you to rest from your drive and enjoy the local hospitality and cuisine before further journeying to explore the awe inspiring views.

Just to take in the amazing views along the coastline and across the ocean at different times of the day or even different weather, is really special. Starting at Torquay the Great Ocean Road is full of things to do and see along the stretch of road that goes all the way down to the twelve apostles.
Waterfalls, wildlife, walks and of course the twelve apostles.
The Great Ocean Road also provides great restaurants and cosmopolitan cafes to stop at and enjoy along the way.

I voted for the Great Ocean road because no matter how many times you travel it there is something different to see. The ocean and our coastline is constantly changing. Sometimes the wind is up, the waves are white caps the water almost grey, other times the sun is out and the sea is like glass with the rugged coastal features reflected in the water. Always amazing and the coastal towns have their own kind of culture; little shops with an array of knick knacks and great food. There are some really great spots to stop for picnics too.

Feels so free to drive through that coastal and hinterland part of Victoria. Everywhere you look is picture perfect and there is so many places to stop and lunch or stay.

The Great Ocean Road epitomises Victoria. Its’ diverse scenery from the breaking ocean waves against cliff edges to rolling farmlandsand small coastal villages to larger towns and cities make it the best drive in Australia.

For the past 11years I’ve stayed in Australia, the trip to or through Great Ocean Road has never failed to take my breath away again and again. You will keep finding the spots you have never been before and everytime you turn to the first water view, my heart will beat so fast because of excitement, eventhough it was my fourth trip in a year :) This is the only place that will keep me going until I can’t walk anymore.

Each time we get visitors to our region, we never fail to take them for a drive along the Great Ocean Road. Such a beautiful drive on our doorstep. You have the coast on one side and lush green forest on the other with some stunning waterfalls and scenic walks.

The view of the coast is so beautiful. It would be a huge crime to see this coast line spoilt beacuse of pollution or worse commercialism. Keep it as it is.

I LOVE the Great Ocean Road, and even hired a convertible Saab to drive it once. I love the idea of the blue ocean vast and fresh on one side and the mountains and countryside on the other. I have horse riden in the Otways, hang glided over New Haven, and stayed in a stilt house at Wye River just to mention a few things.

The great ocean road is one of the most beautiful drives that I have driven, and it does not require death defying driving to navigation to be able you to enjoy a great scenic drive. if you enjoy bush driving drive down the ocean road and then head inland from Apolla Bay and drive back on the inland road through Forrest and Beech Forrest to complete a great driving experience

A visually stimulating drive with plenty of interesting stops along the way. One must not overlook the non ocean issues such as the koalas around Wye River or “The Fly” at the Otways. Multiple food, coffee and comfort stops along the way, with the option of return to Melbourne by other routes, or prolonged at further locations. I just wish it were a little closer to Melbourne.

A drive along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most spectacular drives, up there with the Grande Corniche above Nice and the highway from Santa Barbara past Big Sur to San Francisco.

Knowing the history of its construction in the 30s adds a fascination as you negotiate some of the hairpin bends, look down at the cliffs below, and across to the vista of glorious ocean. Teddy’s Lookout at Lorne, the Otway Fly at Forrest, and the 12 Apostles at Port Campbell, (preferably at sunset) together with stops to see the koalas and the occasional echidna crossing the road, combine to make a really memorable experience.

    HI to you ,
As a young man in the early years of the great ocean road i worked at a sawmill in kennett river1960 –1980 and lived in lorne travelling daily to and from lorne ..
Between there are many experiences that i went through and took in during this time. The windy point three kms from lorne was an experience that not a lot is known about when the road was sinking into the ocean at a rate of 10 -15 cmtrs a day. The CRB engaged a engineer from overseas to advise a solution to this. It was solved by moving up the mountain side and drilling 100mms holes down into the sub base rock and installing huge wire rope stitching into the cliffs the road was closed for quite sometime. Another time i can recall when the hitchcock creek breached the road and a section of road 100mtrs in length went out to sea in about 15 minutes.

My younger brother and I took our first road trip together driving from Melbourne to Warrnambool along the Great Ocean Road. We loved the spectacular views over the ocean, the incredible coastline and the beautiful National Park. We expected at every turn to see a dinosaur walk out of the trees - it was so pristine. We loved the Rainforest Walk in Cape Otway National Park and Apollo Bay was the perfect place to stop for the night.

Fantastic scenery, rolling green hills, windswept beaches make this road a must do for every visitor to our shores and for Australian residents alike. It still takes my breath away eery time I visit, even though I once lived in the Western District. Sensible, eco friendly building restrictions means the are is retained in its unspoilt state for future generations to enjoy!

Where else could you drive and see so much. Everytime we ‘get on the road’ its a minimum whole week to get to Portland and back. We stay at different venues each time and its nothing to only travel upto 20 ks in a day with stops to walk along never ending bush tracks to find waterfalls, bush, surf beaches. Our favourite time of year is winter when in our view nature is at its best with full surf, waterways AND waterfalls. Cold naaaaah, when was the last time you stood on a beach in a storm with the wind and tide blowing you over and trying to pour the thermos??? God I love this country.

The Great Ocean Road is a Victorian heritage icon due to its construction by gangs of unemployed men during the Depression years following WW1. That its construction has stood the test of time is testament to their workmanship. The little rock falls every now and again add to its air of excitement. The constant twists and turns, clifftop views and almost touching the foamy waves as the road climbs and drops provides an amazing experience for both locals and overseas visitors. No matter how many times I travel the road, I never tire of the constantly changing scenery. The battering the coast takes is ably demonstrated by the disappearance of many of the Twelve Apostles and the breaking up of London Bridge.

This is truly one of the most breath taking and awe-inspiring scencic drives I have travelled. Meandering south, as you peer east out the window, sweeping views of Bass Straight and the Southern Ocean can be seen, brilliant and blue with the magnificant rock stacks of the Twelve Apostles jotted out over the sea blanket - truly a sight to see once the sun starts to set! To the west, the Otway National Park is a thriving wonderland of waterfalls and lush dense rainforests which cannot be missed - especially the Otway Tree Top Walk which you have to visit if you would like some stunning views of the Parks tree top canopy.

A trip to the Great Ocean Road is not complete without taking the time to surf one of Australia’s best breaks - Bells Beach! - For the best surfing, I would reccommend going in Autumn/Winter where you can find some brilliant right-handers at both the bowl and rincon breaks. A wetsuit is a must!

Warning!!! Driving along this route may cause extreme happiness and pleasure.

I didn’t appreciate what a road this was, I used to live on its door step, and would drive along it every so often, and back for something to do. I have also driven the length each way a few times as well. Looking at the scenery but not really seeing.

    Take the time to see.

Striking contrasts between white sandy beaches and sheer cliffs in the matter of a breath or two, nothing to see but native bush, and the rugged beauty, not to mention the endless opportunities for some relaxing whilst holding a fishing rod.
    Something for everyone.
Now I have moved to another country, and nothing here in NZ compares, some nice coastal roads, but not close the scenic wonders of this amazing roadway.
Always think of the Ocean Road whilst driving the Corromandel Peninsula, but it just not the same. If you are reading this and have been on both roads, you will know what i mean.

The Great Ocean Road is famous around the world for it’s beauty, and this makes it a must see for any person living in Australia. The personalities of the coastal towns along the way change with each kilometer, culminating (It hink) in the most picturesque town in Victoria-Apollo Bay. There are activities to do all along the way, or you can simply enjoy the splendour of the view from the road. The Spectacular Great Ocean Road has it all, swerves and curves, swirls and thrills with oceans of endless wild surf coast scenery. I have been travelling this road several times each year since I arrived in this country from my native Canada. I bring all of my oveseas visitors to enjoy her raw beauty. I have holidayed in the Lorne Caravan parks and many of the surrounding small towns with my 6 children. I scattered my first husbands ashes at the 12 Apostles. I have driven, sat as a pillion and now I also enjoy riding my own motorbike, it truely is about the journey and not the destination.

I have had wonderful experiences driving along the Great Ocean Road and also riding as a pillion on our motorbike. I remember heading off on Christmas holidays when I was a child (many years ago) and I was so excited and amazed at the views, the ocean and staying at caravan parks along the way. As an adult , my partner and I went on a holiday along the Great Ocean Road heading towards Adelaide. We saw our wonderful coastline when it was calm and romantic, and when it was angry and wild. We have travelled many kilometres around our wonderful country but that part of our world we keep going back to.
