We have been visiting Walhalla for the last 6-7 years. My husband first experienced the area when introduced to a trailbike ride to Wood End. My children now 4 and 1 years really enjoy the steam train ride. We were lucky enough to be able to hand feed the colourful wild birds at the General Store next to the old bank vault. It is well worth the walk to read the historical signs at each house site. The old fire station bought back memories of my papa who was a firefighter in Melbourne and the Band Stand can only make you think about how busy the town events would have been. It is a great place for a day trip but you will need to stay a couple of days to fully explore the town.

Spent the day recently at Walhalla. I have been there a few other times in the past, but nether tire of the beauty and marvel at the fact that such a large community did once exist there. The volunteers and residence do a fantastic job on reconstructing the town - it seems every time I go there it has changed for the better in some way. LOVE IT and believe everyone should visit there at least once.

A gorgeous, quaint, O so picturesque village in it’s own idyllic secluded valley. It takes you back to another time. A little golden gem. The train journey through the gorges & along the river is spectacular, thanks to the volunteer railway staff who were very friendly. The information plaques along the street tell of fascinating tales from days gone by. The mountain slopes are sooooooooo very steep. What an amazing place!

Walhalla is certainly a wonderful destination for the family. It certainly was a memorable visit for our family when the children were younger. It generates loads of conversations with the children and encourages their interests in Australian history. Might be time to visit again soon.

Walhalla & surrounding Mountain Rivers district is a world of it’s own, unspoiled by the modern rat race, a wonderful place to appreciate the finer things of life.

Just popped in as we were in the area heading up to Mt Baw Baw. Still a beautiful spot. I hadn’t been there for 30 years, since a school camp. Nice to see that it’s got electricity now! The rebuilding that has taken place has really added to the feel of what the town would have been like in its heyday. Delighted to have been back and we’re planning to come again for a bit longer.

We have travelled to Walhalla several times and never tire of it. The first time it was like stepping back in time. The second time was enjoying the beauty. Third time was exploring - there are many hidden treasures.

It is a unique experience, a wonderful atmosphere, can easily sit in Walhalla, unwind and just imagine what it had been in its heyday!

Visiting during the week, we had the whole town to ourselves. Our main company was the lyrebirds, crimson rosellas and one very fat wombat! A delight to revisit again and again.

We started our day on the Railway going from Walhalla to Thomson. The scenery going down the gorges were unbelievable. The trip might only take 20 mins but it is worth it. The guide on the train is a wealth of information, he spend the return trip telling us about the area and what has happened since he became a volunteer.

From there we walk into town and up to the cemetery , which we were told had started to take bodies again, not sure if this guy was pulling my leg or not.

From there we came to the fire station, which had all these amasing pictures and information about what the town used to look like and what had happened during the bush fires.

We had lunch in the general store, very nice burgers.

From there we walked up to the Cricket Ground which is 200mtrs above the town and took about an hour to walk up there.

We then walked to the long tunnel gold mine and had a look around. All up the trip was worth it next time we are definitely going to stay the night at the local hotel.

Revisited this beautiful location after an absence of 28 years. Have travelled the world and am fond of New Zealand but we forgot how beautiful this region truelly was. Sorry Kiwi’s. This place is simply much better and a real gem in our tourist crown. Best thing we loved were the cheeky lirebirds in the town. Took great pix of the wildlife and terrific mining homes and taverns. WIll come back sooner next time.

I remember visiting Walhalla with my parents whwn I was a boy and likewise with my children some time back. To me the town leaves an ever lasting impression on you and you look forward to the time when you revisit this remarkable Victorian historical town. This I did yeterday accompanied by my partner, Vikki - her very 1st experience and guess what it left the same impression on her that I have carried as have my 3 children for many years. Apart from the overall ambience of the town the Mine Tour is well worth doing - excellent value for money. The history and experience of wlking in the mine and learning so much about the past and the present was invaluable.

My partner and I have just completed a 10 day tour of Victoria, we saw all the major sights and Walhalla was the best of them all. We took a ride on the Goldfields railway and loved it. We will defintaley be going back to stay in the log cabin, take a ghost tour and do some serious hiking in the beautfiul surrounding areas. I give it 5 stars, if I could I would give it 10!

I have been going to Walhalla for 50 years. It is like a spider’s web, easy to be drawn into but you will never escape it magnetism. It is so special that a place like this still exists. Thank heavens inappropriate development has never been allowed! May it prosper forever and continue its magnetism.

This is the second time I’ve visited Wahalla, it still leaves with fond memories of its beauty and tranquility. This time we stayed at the Windsor House B&B. It has an amazing old world ambiance. Very romantic and it’s definitely worth at least a weekend stay over!

My second visit was for the 100 years of the motor car in Walhalla. We had a great weekend. Michael Leaney and crew did a brilliant job at organising this event. Keep up the good work.

My Husband and I both agree that Walhalla is one of the few destinations in Victoria that in only recent years has received electricity and has always maintained the history and culture of living in the old days as a part of day to day living without going too modern.

The township has much to see and experience and when you walk through it really takes you back in time, even to the old lolly shop. It is easy to let your imagination run wild and picture yourself back in the 1800’s.

The Cemetery and mines gives you a real eerie sense of past life which is quite spooky at night, but it can be a talking point for years to come… All in all we love the place and would recommend it to all who come to Vic and the high Country!!

An historic village being restored to life as it was in the beginning, with it’s own railway operating and beautifully restored buildings. These attributes allow the village to retain and regain the atmosphere of times past. We have been visiting now for over 50 years. Have done many of the walks around Walhalla and Coopers Creek. Always enjoy visiting and picnicking there

Just returned from the living and breathing historical township of Walhalla. Every step you take is filled with living history, every breathe you take is another motivation for seeing more. Stayed at The star, Russell and Michael’s hospitality was first class, their advise second to none. It has taken me a long time to experience this place first hand, it wont be my last I will go back. Stayed at a friend’s place at Walhalla on weekend of 28th & 29th June 2008
Accompanied another friend who took his 1904 Cadillac which was part of the car display that weekend - ,celebrating 100 years since cars first visited Walhalla.
We were blessed with lovely clear sunny weather - although still very cold and windy.I loved the valley setting - I was amazed with the history of the place - the mining and the fires - and the rebuilding.
I learned that the army apprentices were employed to help volunteers rebuild the Mechanics Institute building and thought that was very practical idea - and a great sense of community.
The cemetrey was also amazing with its very old gravestones - you need to be a goat to cope with the steepness.
The railway was good too. The people were very friendly and welcomoing.

    WALHALLA -
What a fantastic location to visit ! A historic gold mining area just waiting to be eagerly explored by young and old . Whether it be the Walhalla Goldfield Railway station with its operating engine and carriages spanning the Thompson river as you head towards Walhalla or , the many places of interest to visit in the tiny settlement such as the historic Long Tunnel extended Gold mine , the old cemetery , even the Ghost tour at night , there will always be something that appeals to everyone . Whether you come for a day to explore , or just a night to soak up fine food and hospitality , and then perhaps stay on in one of the many period establishments overnight that Walhalla so proudly bosts - you are sure to be pleasantly pleased . You may wish to camp for the weekend near the quaint Stringers creek and relive what life must have been in the Walhalla heyday . One thing is for sure though , the locals will make you very welcome and entice you with the rich history that abounds this little valley which provided so much to the early economy of our fine state - I will definitely be going back to Walhalla , and , I hope very much that you visit soon this golden gem in Gippsland .

My family and I just visited the beautiful Walhalla on Saturday for the Centenary Celebration in our 1960’s Holden and found it so peaceful, even though there were many visitors in town. The wander up the road along the stream was tranquil. There were even three men panning for gold amidst the rally. We walked up the hill to look at the brilliant scenery and saw a lady gardening on the steep, lush and rocky slope she would call her garden. I couldn’t stop taking photos of the amazing view. And as for the Townsfolk, they worked as a great team, co-ordinating the Centenary weekend. Thanks Walhalla. I will come again…

I have watched Walhalla develop from a few rundown buildings to the smart little tourist town it is today - & yet it has not been spoilt, or over-run by mass tourism. The work has been done almost entirely by volunteers, & people who have improved their properties along with general town facilities. They are well supported by local businesses & the shire council, as well as receiving well deserved Government help. We love to go there to just soak up the atmosphere.

My wife and I attended the Centenary Rally in our 1976 FIAT Spider and what a wonderful weekend we had. As lovers of old cars and Australia’s historical past, Walhalla was an ideal venue. The pleasure began with the easy two hour hop from Melbourne and the lovely little run down the valley from Rawson to Walhalla. Michael Leaney and team’s organisation of the event and the hospitality at our overnight stay at the Star Hotel were excellent. The sun shone on Saturday and it was great to wander around town looking at the cars in a perfect historical setting, but to also visit Walhalla’s historic sites such as the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine and the Cemetery. The walk along the Australian Alps Walking Track to the Thomson station and the train ride up the rugged and picturesque Stringer’s Creek is not to be missed. And at the end of all this activity it was great to return to the Star Hotel to a delicious 3 course dinner and a comfortable bed. We will certainly be back to Walhalla.

We admired the beautiful scenic drive to Walhalla, listened to the birds and enjoyed the ambiance of the bush. The train ride to the town was a highlight enjoyed by children and adults alike. While at Walhalla we picnicked beside the river, enjoyed a coffee from one of the local shops and walked around the town exploring the local historic sites. An excellent park kept the children occupied, they even had a swim in the babbling clear creek to cool off.
Walhalla is a wonderful place to catch up with friends and family because it offers something that caters for all interests; good food, history, long interesting walks, clean fresh air in a delightful natural setting.

Wonderful place to visit and will certainly be back. Makes you realize the hardships that people had to endure. Visits to the Mine and the Cemetry and the museum - the floods and fires and their restoration to keep the town alive. A credit to them all. I recommend a visit by one and all. I grew up in the hills surrounding Walhalla and it is still a place that tugs at my heartstrings. There is so mch history in the township and surrounds that it almost reaches out to touch you. No-one can visit Walhalla without experiencing some of the wonderment of those who came before us.

I recently visited the Township of Walhalla and found it to be a wonderful place. Full of History and kept in its original state. It is so pretty and tucked away in a valley. It really made me feel that I had gone back in time.

Walhalla is a place that seems to draw one back time and time again. A sense of peace and tranquility envelopes the heart and soul in this town where it seems time has almost stood still. Such beautiful scenery, historic buildings, tourist attractions galore, the list goes on. A very special place to visit for the whole family or perhaps a romantic weekend away.

Rich in history and natural beauty. Night or day , and in all seasons this place has atmosphere.
The bush around Walhalla still holds relics of a bygone era.Volunteers do a fine job especially on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. My favourite place to take visitors.

Love this place! Have visited (sometimes camped at) Walhalla many times with family and friends. The township, history, atmosphere, cemetry, cricket oval (walk sideways for the steeper parts, makes the uphill journey more fun! If you haven’t checked this part out before, it’s so worth it when you get to the top for the sound of silence - a world of its own…not even a cricket fan!)…the river, parrots, walking trails, views from hilltops….the pictures and memories from Walhalla have always been good.

Walhalla Goldfields has a rich history, and is unspoilt by modern commercialiastion. It has been restored to it’s origanal splendor giving the Township a real step back in time experience. Walhalla is set in south eastern Gippsland and 40 mins north of Latrobe Valley and has a picturess scenery. If your lucky you can try your luck with a gold pan and strike it lucky. A true experience for anybody.

A decade or two ago I started on a lap of the world from Melbourne. First stop was just north of Walhalla and it is still one of my favourite locations and it ranks up there with both Yosemite NP, USA and the Lakes District of northern England.

It is a living a breathing time capsule that we can peer into the past of Australia. The walk along the old railway line is a must as well as looking at the old town but stories like Kitty Kane buried on the Aberfeldy road are testament to a hard working town in an absolutely superb environment.

A cycle ride from the main rail line from either Moe or Traralgon is a great way to view the scenery and enjoy the challenging hills and the annual “Wheels to Walhalla” cycle ride is a superb introduction.

We were there on sunday 15th June, with the Wolseley Car Club.
The drive down to Walhalla was very good, the countryside was very interesting.
Some of the views around that area are great.
The town itself is facinating. The shops are very interesting. The train ride was great, a good way to see the scenery.
All in all an interesting way to go back in time and history, to see how things

Walhalla is a tiny niche of yesterday available for todays tourists. Visiting the town is like stepping back 100+ years and enjoying the culture, sights, travel options and scenery of olden days. However the accommodation available is modern and comfortable with a heritage feel. Go and see for yourself! Take the family and have a great time.

The place is a hidden garden of Eden. The townsfolk are beautiful people and will not leave their special place even with roaring bushfire. There is plenty to see and do whether on road or offroad. The railway is beautiful. Everytime you visit there will be something you hadn’t noticed earlier! I would recommend the Ghost tours, Mountain Top Experience four wheel drive adventure to mine relics and other history. This place takes you back in time as soon as you cross the Thomson River.

I would love to vote for Walhall as I have read up about the quite town. I keep saying to my children and husband that we should go there for a holiday. So we can show the children what it was like in the olden days. Friends of mine have been there and have raved about the beauty. I would just like to relax with my family and take every little bit in about the town. I would take plenty of photo’s also.
Teaching the children about the history of a town and old shops. Taking long walks and see the old houses and mining sites. I would like to travel also on the railway.

I was visiting friends in Waragul in May and for the want for something to do, we decided to take a picnic lunch and head on to Walhalla as none of the 4 of us had ever been there and boy oh boy what a wonderful choice it was.
The walks and foilage were beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed the gold mine tour. It really gave us an insight as to what dangers miners face whilst working in the mine.
The picnic area was most inviting and we spent a wonderful hour there having our lunch and chatting.
Toilet facilities were clean. Lots of rubbish bins around so no excuse for leaving rubbish around at the picnic area.
It was a well spent day and we were refreshed with the cold fresh air. Will definitely take other friends there in the future

My partner and I just got engaged on 27th June and wanted to go somewhere we hadn’t been before and spend some time alone together, and that we did.
Walhalla is so peaceful, the scenery was so nice and just the serenity…
Started with a lovely breakfast overlooking a beautiful view, we went on the train ride which was such a nice thing to do during the day, had an absolutely beautiful lunch and dinner, then went on the ghost tour - loved it, the mine looked so good and more realistic at night. The following day we went on the gold mine tour - had a great time.
So much to do in such a small town
    We are so going back.

I love going to Walhalla as I grew up near there. It is always peaceful and I really enjoy looking around the cemetery and feeling the history. I have always liked the bush and feel particularly at home because of it and love to breathe in the fresh air. It is a wonderful place for all ages and people seem to respect the history. I hope one day when I have more time to stay overnight and do some gold panning - you never know! The people of Walhalla do a wonderful job and I wish to congratulate them. It really is a wonderful place!

No longer a ghost town, Walhalla now has its own rich spirit. The variety of experiences, from beautiful walks to the train ride of a llifetime; the folk heritage of tales of more prosperous times, and the graves on the rocky hillside, contribute to a most memorable experience.
The people of Walhalla are building their own legends. My favourite story is of the bake-off during the recent fires. Though in great danger, with the fire front quite near, the people of Walhalla rose in the very early morning and used every oven in the town to bake biscuits to distribute to the firefighters, as their token of appreciation for the tremendous work that the firefighters were doing. Virtue had its reward, and the town was spared.

Walhalla has historic WOW factor as one of Victoria’s richest gold producing areas of the 19th century. The little township of Walhalla is situated on a remote and picturesque mountain with many relics of the gold era, including tramways which now form walking tracks around the town. The Walhalla Star Hotel offers unique accommodation with top service and yummy treats.

While you’re there check out the “Great Walhalla Alpine Trail” - a 3 night/2 day fully guided and catered walk over the first 40km (23 miles) of the Australian Alps Walking Track from Mt Baw Baw to Walhalla Historic Township. The magnificent trail offers a wide range of beautiful scenery in the Baw Baw National Park, alpine meadows, twisted snow gums, towering mountain ash, pre-historic myrtle beech, stunning geological formations, fern glades, wild rivers and gold heritage.

Although we live in the beautiful Alpine Valley of NE Victoria, Walhalla is truly set in “Gods Country”. Our 15 and 12 yr old children were devastated that we were returning there without them for a 3 night stay, despite them both having school camp that week! They would be happy to leave all their computerized gadgetry behind, just to absorb some of magic that Walhalla has in its hills and surrounds.
Our family travels extensively throughout Victoria 4-5 times a year, visiting many of the most popular tourist destinations, particularly in “out of season” times and believe that Walhalla comes out 5 stars in its strength to offer something to all types of people visiting, with such a variety of tourists requirements, even to those not into our exciting history. It really should be the number 1 place to visit in your book!

I live in England and must be one of the unusual few to travel to Australia to stand at the graveside of my great- and great-great-grandparents. But I achieved that in Walhalla Cemetery. I have been wanting to visit Walhalla ever since I learned it was the birthplace of my grandmother and when I finally made the trip it exceeded all my expectations.
I can only echo everything other contributors have written about the history, the location, the atmosphere and the people. My connections are particularly personal but nobody with an imagination could see the old photographs of Walhalla, then look around there and fail to be moved.

What a gem! I want everyone in the world to know about this place, and yet again I want to keep it all to myself.
I came in autumn when the golden leaves framed the winding street and the magical little houses. I came in Spring when the blossoms had me sitting in the sun drinking in their wonder.
I can see now the beauty of the historic buildings and wooded hillsides and I can’t wait to get back and have a long and extensive break. As a matter of fact I’m booking NOW!!

The majesty! The glory! The soaring of the soul as you traverse the winding mountain road then burst forth upon the tiny hidden treasure. History comes alive as you imagine how it must have been to travel to this place and live here in the days before made roads and electricity. Large families existed in these small cottages as the men went to work in the dangerous mines. Imagine trying to keep warm and get the washing dry when a small fire was all that you had in the winter. It makes us appreciate how blessed we are to live today.
See the photos in the museum of how huge the town looked over a century ago. Tour the mine, ride the small train, climb to the cricket ground sliced off the top of a large hill. Stroll around the picturesque walking trails in the hills, listen to the birds and enjoy the quietude and serenity.
Come once and you’ll come again. It’s a place that gets into your blood and into your heart, and once there, it will live in your memory forever.

Local volunteers take the time to share the town’s history - and it’s not just any old history!
The old pub serves one of the very best counter meals you’ll ever have. Relaxing on the verandah of the pub, you can just soak up the history and imagine the town in more bustling times.

A magical hint at the past. Once again I enjoyed visiting a living part of Victoria’s history. The peace and serenity after dusk is magical. The Museum is great, but would be better in a larger building. Pity the old Post Office is not open. I should be set up to present some of the history, including the incredible Doreen Hannah (? name, was Post Mistress during Black Friday fires etc.) By far the best time to visit is mid week when there are less tourists, (ha! I am a tourist). The mid week atmosphere, especially in autumn, is wonderful. I hope Walhalla can grow a little, but keep it’s charm for all generations to experience.

Walhalla is a historical location that our family love. The situation in the narrow valley and it’s proximity to tourist railway, Thompson Dam and Victoria Alps makes it an ideal destination for day trips or a longer stay. We have visited many times over the years, taking our interstate and international visitors to this

It’s perfect. Just jump on a train…they meet you and take you through the winding roads to the “Mountain of Heroes”, where you do regenerate and go back to a, not so long ago, forgotten way of living. I’ll be back … MC

And now in english for those who feel better in the Shakespeare language !
Walhalla is great ! It’s a charming place, history marked this valley, cimetery, Michael’s hotel, Russel’s orchid… and the post office ! Send a letter or a postcard from there ! You could help this peacefull place by your visit ! I really enjoyed my stay there in the Walhalla Star Hotel !!

The great little place with heaps to see and do. If you’ve never been to Walhalla, put it onto your “must do” list. It’s best to stay overnight too so you can experience the dark and quiet. Love the bushwalking. Winter is the best time, the snow at Mt St Gwinear [and now Mt Baw Baw] is just a short drive away so it makes a good holiday combo.

We have travelled to many countries overseas and seen some amazing places, but we were blown away with Walhalla…..and it’s just on our doorstep! A wonderful feeling of Victoria’s gold mining history - the LongTunnel Mine tour is a must. The people of Walhalla reflect a strong sense of love and care for the area and this is shown in the restoration of the historic buildings: the B&Bs, the hotels and the scenic Walhalla Goldfields Railway which runs from Walhalla Station to Thomson Station and return - one hour round trip… Refreshments are available at both stations. Other highlights include the cemetery and the cricket ground on the top of a hill (flattened for that purpose). There is a sense of life and future growth in the tourist trade: for example - the railway is hoping to extend the line through to Erika. We only visited last week, but we were so taken with the area that we are visiting again over the long weekend!! Walhalla has been dealt many blows with fire and flood but has bounced back strongly. It is compulsory visiting!!

Visited the cemetery and the cricket ground. Had a great meal at the Wally pub. Have visited Walhalla many times on day trips but staying overnight was just the best will definatley be doing that again sometime soon.

Quite a suprise! as soon as you set out on the road to Walhalla you feel as though you are going back in time, how good it would be to have a “themed dress hire” place where visitors could wander around in true victorian style. You can almost hear the mines and feel the people of the past in this little village, a rarity to be preserved and enjoyed by those wanting a break from the modern pace of things. I will be returning many times I am sure.

Walhalla and the surrounding area has so much to offer. Just in one day you can see so much; from the historic township of Walhalla to the snow fields at either Mt Baw Baw or Mt St Gwinear. In between there are numerous bushwalks, places to stay, places to eat, 4WD tours, goldmine tours, train rides - to be honest, one day is just not enough to even begin to appreciate what this region has to offer. It’s a great area for a family getaway. In summer you can laze away the day having a picnic at Stringers Park or at Mt Erica, paddle in the Thomson River, there’s even an indoor heated pool in Rawson together with tennis courts and squash courts. Peterson’s Lookout is amazing. The list just goes on and on……….

I love Walhalla and have been visiting for years; whenever our overseas relatives are here in Australia we take them to Walhalla, and they love it too. It’s an extremely pretty and quiet town, and takes you straight back in time to how people used to live. The Long Tunnel Mine tour is particularly interesting.

But there’s much more to the region than Walhalla. There are so many different walking tracks and 4WD tracks to explore just in the local area, while a bit further out you are in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and can drive all the way to Aberfeldy and Woods Point and beyond. I find Rawson to be a great launching point for day visits to Mt St Gwinear and Mt Baw Baw as well. It’s fantastic to experience so much open space up in the mountains, come across the local wildlife out in the bush, and just breath that fresh air.

Walhalla is one of the most unique towns in the world. Unspoilt by progress and untouched by industry, Walhalla remains in a time warp, giving the town an appeal and ambiance. Over time the residence of Walhalla have embraced the history and maintained a ghost town that was once a thriving gold mining town. I love this town because you can go there and feel like the fast pace of life, work and progress you face every day, just doen’t matter. It is like time travel to one of the most relaxing places on earth.

Peaceful, pretty and steeped in history, Walhalla offers the ideal ‘cure de campagne’ for the jaded city dweller. What sets it above similar venues, however, is the unbridled enthusiasm of the locals for their chosen or native environment and the co-operative networking that exists between them .

No escape distination in Victoria can match that of historic Walhalla. If the incessent ring of your mobile phone, the constant background noise of traffic, televisions, radios, and general day to day life is becoming tiresome then Walhalla is the answer. Your phone will not ring, the traffic on the single road in town crawls…all five cars a day of it. There is only one television and even that goes off at 10.00 at night. Here there is only peace tranquility, not only the sense of a simpler life, but the genuine article.

Not many towns can boast they have trout swimming in the creek next to the main street., where you can look from the footpath and see these sleek fish just lazing in the currant. Walhalla is a place you can go and just relax, forget about the world for the day and soak up the atmosphere.

  232. 22 Lynda
    May 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Walhalla is a town of mystery, busy and busling throughout the day on weekends, quite as a grave yard at night. When the moon is hidden with clouds the night sky is as black and as dark as the interior of any underground mine. Walhalla is the ideal setting for Ghost Tours held on most Saturday nights, great entertainment for everyone.
I’ve never seen so many Lyrebirds in my life since visiting Walhalla, scratching around in peoples front gardens.
When visiting Walhalla you may feel like your hundreds of ks from anywhere, but it’s only 50 Ks from both Moe and Traralgon.

I have been drawn to Walhalla ever since I was a young girl. There is a special magic that you feel as you wander through this peaceful valley. With currently only 10 perminent people living there, it is inviting, cosy and relaxing. You are made welcome at every point. Historic markers scattered through town tell you a snippet of what it was once like. The museum in the post office has some wonderful historic pictures that cannot be missed. They even hire out gold pans with instructions, for us that dont know how to pan for gold!
The Long Tunnel Extended Gold mine tours are every single day of the year and have the best tour guides ever. They always greet you with a smile and are willing to have a chat about Walhalla ’s past and what its like to live there now. There are Lyre birds busily scrattting away through out the bush imitating all forms of animals. One even imitates the sound of the Eftpos machine at the LTE mine!
The Walhalla train gives you a sense of how slow and peaceful things can be, as it meanders along its way to Thomson River and back, clinging to the extremely steep hill side as it snakes its way along.
There are many kms of old tram line tracks that you can walk on, experiencing the fresh smell of the bush and you can see first hand how nature has fought back after the Coopers Creek fires. You never regret taking the slow winding drive into Walhalla, there is something new to enjoy on every trip.

My wife and I had a 3 day midweek stay at Walhalla’s Star Hotel and it was the best short stay we have ever had. The hotel was excellent in every way and Walhalla…well you just have to go there, walk around and enjoy. Unlike many destinations Walhall is not contrived..it is natural.

Nestled deep in a hidden Gippsland Valley is a time capsule of a town, called Walhalla. Lyre birds & wombats peep out in greeting as you travel up the gently winding road through pristine Australian bush. Miners cottages cling to the mountainside as steadfastly as the town clings to the dignity of its past. Walhalla’s permanent population of less than 20 people has no mobile phone or television reception and the radio works only if the wind is blowing in the right direction. The loudest sounds are the kookaburras laughing and the toot of the goldfields tourist train winding its way along the Thomson Gorge. Every time I enter this valley it is like slipping under a quilt of tranquility. Like country towns of old, hospitality is the mainstay of Walhalla. We generally star at The Star which embodies this friendly, peaceful feeling. Its historic facade hides a thoroughly modern interior with first class service. There is something magical about Walhalla that keeps drawing me back again and again. Only those who have visited will know what I mean.

Walhalla is a treasure - beautiful scenery, old historic buildings, good accomodation, great museum, a wonderful steam train journey and a spectacular walk along the mountainside overlooking the town.

The drive is a lovely one as you proceed through lush forest across the Thompson river into this long, narrow, deep valley with a gorgeous town along the way. It is so cute with it’s rotunda and hotel, shops and B&B’s. Walking the length of the town is a pleasure with the sounds of black cockatoos screeching overhead and the quaint little cottages clinging to the sides of the valleys slopes. The loop track from the rotunda up hill and along an old tram line to the long tunnel gold mine before making your way back to the main road and the rotunda is a must do. The kids absolutely love the train ride and pester us all the way to Thompson station to go on the train.

It’s a warm sunny day, I wander through the tiny mountain hamlet a light breeze captures the scent of Spring… Cherry blossoms and bulbs are in full bloom the laughter of children can be heard in the nearby Stringers Park while the BBQ’s are sizzling, families and friends enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
Around the corner I found a great coffee shop basking in the sun with a view of the Star Hotel and the Band Rotunda where I had a lovely coffee and a chat with a few of the locals…. only to find out that there is actually only 8 of them!
I walked up the stairs on to the old tramline walkway with picturesque views I couldn’t help but take photos!
I walked along to the Long Tunnel Mine where I went on a tour to hear the tales of old… Oh and don’t miss a ride on the little narrow gauge railway!!!!
This old gold mining town has lots to offer, I highly recommend it, be it for a day trip with family & friends or a romantic night’s get away in one of the B&B’s in town.

A favourite place of mine to visit. Walhalla is situated in a narrow valley on the banks of Stringers Ck. A place of peace and tranquility, tucked away in beautiful bush surroundings. Here you can shrug off the mantle of stress that everday living brings, step back in time and take a journey into the past to learn of the history of the gold rush era. Just do it and find out for yourself all that Walhalla has to offer. You will not be disapointed.

Walhalla would have to be one of my favourite holiday destinations. It has it all - scenic beauty, a rich history based on the Victorian Gold Rushes, peace and quiet, abundant native wildlife and great sposts to explore.
When I want to unwind form the hurly burly of life, Walhalla is one place I know I can go where this will happen.

An amazing little village hidden in a deep valley. Beautiful autumn foliage, amazing colours and around every corner a new vista. I love Walhalla because it’s so great to photograph and the kids love the “toy” town feel…tiny miner’s cottages, a meandering stream plus tons of things to do. Don’t miss a tour of the gold mine or a ride on the train. The hillside cemetery is also a must do. Tons of history in a spectacular setting. Walhalla is so close to Melbourne yet worlds away in pace! You can even get a decent coffee which is not always that easy in small country towns.

Very pretty historic gold mining township just 2 hours drive east of Melbourne. The town is nestled into a steep valley with a babling creek running through the main street. Step back in time 100 years - even if it is only for a day

Walhalla is a very picturesque town nestled in a unique valley setting. Only two hours from Melbourne it is an excellent day trip or a perfect weekend. You can take advantage of the free camping or experience the many types of accommodation that the town offers. There are many walks along old timber tramlines with spectacular views of the valley and old goldming relects.
A guided tour in the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, and a trip on the Goldfields Narrow Gauge Railway are a must do part of any visit.
The Walhalla Ghost Tour is a must for anyone staying overnight.
You must visit Walhalla once in your lifetime, I did many years ago and am still going back.

Walhalla is one of those destinations that can be rightly described as having its own unique atmosphere, situated in a rugged valley of great natural beauty whilst retaining enough of its gold era history to get a flavour of what was. It represents an easy day trip from Melbourne and there are plenty of sights to take in - the meandering main street, the Long Tunnel Extended Mine tour and the reconstructed narrow gauge railway travelling through the Stringers Creek gorge.
One of Walhalla’s lesser known attributes is the wide range of walking tracks that pass by numerous house and mining sites.

A spectacular drive with stunning mountain scenery lead us to the most amazing valley town. Walhalla is packed full of suprises. We walked the tramtrack above the town, explored a real goldmine and the cemetry filled with stories of fires and floods. We had coffee in one of the original old shops and tried to imagine the town as it was when over 3,000 people lived there. A ride on the Walhall Goldfield Railway through the steep mountain ranges provided the whole family with a special memory of a special place.
