Grand Ridge Rail Trail wends 13 picturesque kms between two lovely rural towns, Boolarra & Mirboo North, in the Strzelecki Ranges in Gippsland.  Remnant stands of temperate rainforest near Boolarra, give way to the drier sclerophyll forest approaching Mirboo North.  At Mirboo North the trail terminates at the award winning Grand Ridge Brewery. Suggested by: neil cartwright

Walk, cycle or horse ride, the diversity is wonderful and the birds and animals abundant.
See if you can spot the historic brick culverts, locally produced at Darlimurla and in my view works of art. There are many rest spots furnished for picnics and occasional passer’s by to say G’day to. Enjoy.

No matter what time of year the Grand Ridge Rail Trail is spectacular to either walk or ride. This rail trail wends it way through the Strzelecki Ranges from the historic township of Mirboo North to Boolarra and takes in aspects of temperate rain forest, open woodlands, rolling green hills, fern gullies and views that make the 13 kilometre trip seem like only a few. Seats have been placed strategically along the trail and the old Darlimurla Railway Station is located at the midpoint of the trail where a slight diversion will take you to the magnificent ‘Big Tree’. At points along the Trail are old hand made brick culverts that run underneath the trail and plenty of wildlife can be spotted from wallabies to the abundance of bird life. Definitely a must for all to see.

Don’t tell any-one but its the best trail in Australia. Where can you walk, ride, skip or dance down or up such a beautiful place with every changing scening and yet be so close to Melbourne.

Rare trees and animals and watch out for the very rare BAW Baw frog that lays its eggs no leaves. yes leaves

Enjoy the magnificent outdoors on the rail trail, in what can only be described as one of the most picturesque parts of Gippsland.

The rail trail winds thru magnificent bush, full of fern gullies, open pasture lands, steep potato country, but above all is accessible to people of all abilities. I have cycled from Mirboo North on many accasions and have walked various sections. We have brought many international visitors to the trail and without fail have voted this one of their most memorable experiences. For visitor to see wallabies and even the humble rabbit blows them away. We highly recommend the trail to fellow cyclists and walkers.

The Mirboo North/Boolarra Rail Trail winds 13 picturesque kilometres between two lovely rural towns located in the Strzelecki Ranges in Gippsland. As a rail-trail it is unique in being continuously along the site of the railway track, and having end points easily accessible within the two towns, and also having easy access along the track at the township of Darlimurla.

Get out of the city and breathe the fresh air! This is a fantastic walk or cycle for all ages and levels of fitness. The Trail can be broken down into sections or if you are feeling energetic complete it in a day. Be rewarded with a great meal and cold beer at end! The natural bush setting is beautiful and I have even seen wombats, kangaroos and echidnas on this walk.

I have cycled the Grand Ridge Rail Trail a few times and I have always enjoyed my time there. If you are looking for more kilometres to add to your trip - you can combine the Grand Ridge Rail Trail with the Great Southern Rail Trail between Leongatha and Foster (50kms)! Visit Prom Country…
