Historic Seaport settled in 1835. Visitors can take self guided heritage walks, picnic in Commonwealth Reserve or enjoy a coffee or meal in one of the Nelson Place cafes, hire a bike and explore the nature reserves and coastal heritage park, and take a ferry ride into Southgate or around the bay on weekends.

greai place to visit ,lots of things to do . The orignal seaport of melbourne with lots of history to see, shops, walks, seaplane rides, boat trips and all so close to melb. Really worth a look or place to stay away ftom the big smoke
Just beautiful!!! Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!!!
I love cooking pancakes on the BBQ at historic Point Gellibrand - just walk along Steve Bracks Promenade from historic Nelson Place, read the historical information as you saunter along. Before too long you will arrive at the beautifully clean Parks Victoria BBQs. Cook and eat as you enjoy watching the ships glide by, people ride by and kids playing on the fabulous playground, what a lovely way to spend a morning, even in winter!
By the way my Point Gellibrand pancake recipe is - one cup self-raising flour, one egg and one and a quarter cups of milk..make sure you beat it up at least an hour before cooking the pancakes.
I love Williamstown. It’s a gorgeous place to spend the day with the family!!!
I chose Williamstown because it has a fantastic historic sea port to view and the restaurants along Nelson place have a lot to offer visitors. The beach is one of the best I’ve been to. I whole view from the power station all the way through to the beach is the most awesome view on any day, hot or cold. We like to park at the timeball tower and have an ice-cream and look out across the bay - it’s great.
Having worked and grown up in Williamstown, the old charm gets me everytime. I love the old buildings, the historic marine waterfront and the stories the locals tell. I also love the cafes, bars and restaurants, the parks and gardens, sunday market and the annual festivals and events. Williamstown, a beautiful place to be!!!
so much to do in such a small space, but plenty of open spaces, by the waterside
It has a maritime atmosphere, no through traffic, quaint cottages, old historic building. cafe scene
I love the old buildings, the wharfs, HMS Castlemaine, the naval dockyards, the food shops - dear and cheap and the lighthouse. The ferry across to St Kilda is handy, too.
great place to go and relax.
Charm of the area
many aspects but the history and architecture is most impressive. Like the cafe precinct but also the old style strip shopping centre along Doglas and Ferguson Sts. My favourite shop is Cartoon- what an Aladdin’s treasure trove. Point Gellibrand is also good to do some closeup big ship watching as they come and go in the shipping channel
The boating, the (most and best) history, the lovely venues for coffee and cake, the underwater life, the art, the Williamstown town Hall, Mt Thomas Police Station, views of the city and the west gate bridge, Commeonwealth Reserve, the Sea Change courthouse, mountain goat beer, groovy artists and rich folk mingling. What more is there…
A great place to watch the sun go down while sipping coffee in one of the many cafes along Nelson Place.
Many wonderful and picturesque walks. Beautiful gardens, historic homes and views of the sky line of Melbourne, all without travelling too far to get to.
There’s water front views at Williamstown that you just have to stop, take a moment and let it all soak in….the masts of the ships bobbing about, the city sky line, the street scape, it seems endless. Although it can be busy with tourists visiting the historic town there is always a relaxing peacefulness that just makes you want more.
Williamstown’s heritage drifts back to the place of the original Port for Melbourne, its colourful past sits comfortably alongside street cafes and restaurants and it’s still the only place in Melbourne you can get to by ferry.
Its link with the industrialisation of Melbourne is never far away and in fact is still evident in its celebration of rail, ships and history.
Do yourself a favour and visit.
its the best part of melbourne to go and and have lattes with your friends. Always guaranteed to have a seat and be able to park. plus no other part of Melbourne captures melbourne’s skyline quite like seeing it from Williamstown!!!
Beautiful parks, great shopping and lovely cafes.
Williamstown may not have the ruggedness of the Great Ocean Road, but it has water, ships, walks, bike trails, fantastic restaurants whilst maintaining it’s ‘village feel’. The best bit is that you don’t have to use a lot of petrol to get there - a ferry trip from Southbank, a bike ride, a train or bus trip is all it takes - come visit and enjoy!
Relaxing in one of the many cafe’s and enjoying the scenery. What a joy!!
The beautiful old world charm that greets you as you drive lazily around. The dockland areas - historical points of interest - this place goes way back. Fabulous shops and so many interesting and different eateries. You can even get there by ferry - take a flight in a seaplane or book an adventure on the Enterprise yacht.
What a beautiful part of Melbourne. Sitting along the foreshore, with a picnic and just enjoying the beautiful views of our amazing city.
Williamstown is a great place to visit - with its seaside holiday feel it creates an ambiance that other bayside suburbs would envy. There are terrific eateries to suit all occasions, a fantastic foreshore and walks and many terrific historic sites to uncover. whether you take a trip by ferry across to Williamstown or drive directly you will not be disappointed - and you will find another reason to come back and visit!
The foreshore of Williamstown. A great walk eat and shop
A nice weekend day trip and historic part of Melbourne.
What a fabulous destination for a day trip, arriving by ferry there is plenty to see and do travelling by foot. It would have to be the most interesting suburb in Melbourne. If you have the time linger for a few days and take in the atmosphere and I haven’t even mentioned the variety of eating houses available. Please enjoy!
