The Kerrisdale Mountain Railway is situated in the north east corner of the Tallarook Ranges, north central Victoria, Australia, the KMR is a unique railway built to two foot (610 mm) gauge on a zig -zag formation. To gain the maximum height within the shortest distance, steep grades and tight curves also abound. Museum includes Boiler House, Steam Engines.

After finding this museum and railway by chance, it was an absolute pleasure to meet our host, explore the machinery on display, and take the ride to the summit station. The views from the top were spectacular, and our host offered a wealth of knowledge about what was on display, it’s history, and the surrounding area. It is something I would recommend as a must see for anyone in the area or for people further afield that have an interest in steam engines.
Having seen first-hand”Doulas Engineering”become, through it,s inception, conception and completion to Kerrisdale Mountain Railway and Museum,we are only too happy to praise the hard work and effort Andrew has put in over many years to realise his dream and vision for the great tourist attraction it is today.A visit to this beautiful place is a visual feast for the eyes of the enthusiast in search of georgeous scenery,a fantastic train ride, and wonderful hospitality from Andrew,Jennifer and their family, including a lick from their very friendly dog.!Having recommended a visit to many people, relatives took their vision impaired grandson for a train ride, and because it was a hot day and unusually quiet,Andrew took the little boy up front with him so he could”drive”the train. The little boy was beside himself with happiness and it made his Nanna and Pa,s day too.Now you don,t get that kind of special treatment just anywhere.Do yourself a favour and make the time to go visit Kerrisdale Mountain Railway, you,ll be so glad you did.!!
KMR is a great family outing, this is our third visit and will not be the last,(fourth lot of grand kids on the way).Anrdew brings back the way it was in true life reminding us of how progression has come so far in such a short time.
We would recommend to any body to take the grand kids, They will love it.
What a little gem, my son is obsested with trains, so we have been to many train/tram attractions throughtout Victoria, but this one was the cleanest, best preserved railway I have ever seen, so much love and hard work has gone into the finished product. Andrew really loves his job and it shows, such dedication only comes from a true train lover.
E-mailing to say how much my wife and self enjoyed our recent visit to the Kerrisdale Railway Museum. We found the staff very friendly and the museum was full of interesting and well preserved items. The train ride was a experience one has to do to appreciate the wonderful views on offer.I,m happy to vote for the Museum . George
A fantastic day out for children young and old. Andrew was great with my children explaining in easy to understand detail how all things steam work. These people are trying hard to hang onto things so easily forgotten by updated technology. Their museum is a credit to them and their hard work.
You must visit this steam museum and two foot zig-zag railway before you miss out . I have been once and have learnt more about how steam engines work from the wise level headed explaniations given by Andrew than in a lifetime of observation . The pristine condition of the displays is remarkable , the views and stories of early exploration and settelment is fasinating . I will return.
The information imparted was both professional and extremely interesting. The steam train ride was fabulous as were the views and the information we received on the surrounding area. The preserving of steam engines in such fabulous working order is a credit to the owners and wonderful history of our past for present generations to experience. Entrance fees for such an experience were extremely reasonable. A most enjoyable experience.
The location and views are fantastic. The variety of steam engines of all sorts in working order (and working) was great. It was well set up for both adults and children. The owner/guides were well-informed, enthusiastic and established a great rapport with children.
For adults there was information about the local history and geography.
This was one of the best tourist afternoons we have had.
We are retired and loved the visit.
Highly recommended for all ages.
Amazing dedication to a momentous task. The working steam exhibits and the Railway itself are in pristine condition. The views are spectacular and the commentary by the host shows a deep love and knowledge of local history which he is only too willing to impart. A true living legend. Don’t miss this rare opportunity for personal service extended to the general public.
A most enjoyable experience on a bitterley cold winters day made all the more pleasant by the most helpful hosts. would be an exellent attraction to take overseas visitors to. will return again with a group of seniors later in the year.
congratulations on the advent of an exellent attraction.
Spectacular views and a great place for a picnic lunch. Railway and Steam museum are a magnificent effort by the dedicated owners and their friends.
This is a great place with fantastic views of the area.
The exhibits are in first class condition & the railway trip very good fun.
The local wildlife is also great to see - kangaroos, & a great rang of birds.
Would also be a great place for a picnic with the family.
Over the years I have been a supporter and have worked occasionally at the railway. I know how much effort has been put into the setup by Andrew and Jennifer and helpers. It is distinct in its outlook and would be the only one of its kind in Australia. We all should endeavour to protect our Australian Heritage and so I wish the railway well.
I work at a day service that provides support for people with disabilities and we recently spent the day at Kerrisdale Railway Museum. Jennifer, Andrew and Melissa went to a great deal of effort to ensure that we had an enjoyable and memorable day and we will certainly be returning to enjoy their wonderful hospitality again.
We had great fun. The train ride was fun and the views were spectacular. Andrew was also most helpful with suggesting other local attractions and things to do.
My parents have done a true labour of love on the railway and I know how much time has been spent on this attraction. Mum and dad go to a lot of effort for every person that attends the railway to have a quality experience. I as their daughter wish them every success and I am extremely proud of them.
What a treasure to find not far from Melbourne. A pleasurable experience with hosts that have a passion for what they do and a history dating back more than 15 years in the construction of the railway. The train journey is only part of the interest here, the working displays of steam and its use in driving mechanics. They also promote the area with lots of information about surrounding activities and sites to visit. Value for money and then some!
We visited the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway and Museum with another couple recently.
We were welcomed by Jenny and Andrew who were generous with their time. We were impressed by their enthusiasm and detailed knowledge of the equipment and the locale history.
The steam engines, rolling stock, the railway network itself and the supporting infrastructure were all immaculate and worked brilliantly together to provide an exciting and fascinating visit for as all.
The males are both very technical and one is a mechanical engineer - both were totally impressed by the excellence of the engineering to bring the railway, it’s infrastructure and the brilliant contents of the museum to a level of presentation and mechanical operation not previously witnessed by either throughout long careers in engineering.
Great location and stunning views.
My grandson Tim,9,and his friend Jack, 10, thought it was a great school holiday jaunt. Just loved it. Andrew was great, very informative and enthusiastic and has a personal way with the children. The engines etc. were spotless and in top order. Not too long to become boring. Jeanette was right on the ball and most helpful Back again tomorrow with Joel,7. and later, the girls,Molly and Verity. Well done KMT
I have visited Kerrisdale Mountain Railway 8 times with groups of frail elderly people . The owners ,Andrew & Jennifer are always friendly & informative & give freely of their time to answer questions.
The time & effort put into the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway construction is a credit to the owners & a great asset to the Shire of Murrindindi
This venue is the best within the Shire of Murrindindi and I have visited them all

A fantastically interesting experience for all ages. Excellent working museum of steam power and examples of what it was used for. The enthusiastic hosts, Andrew and Jennifer, explain and demonstrate their collection of trains and steam engines with passion. A great out of town venue that is truely unique in a country setting with panoramic views. They also explain incredible knowledge of the early pioneering days and the spirit of our early settlers. They are to be highly commended of the initiative of what they have created along with the help of their train enthusiasts and volunteers who initially helped setup the zig zag railway. Great experience.
I had the pleasure of taking some of our residents from our aged care facility to this wonderful place,I was very unsure of how the residents would enjoy such a diverse outing and was thrilled with the help and the knowledge that was offered to myself and our residents, a spectular day with stunning views was had by all involved.
One of our residents is a train buff and hadn’t been outside the facility for years but when he came home from this he didn’t stop grinning for weeks, the photos are now his most treasured memory, a hugh thankyou to Andrew and Jennifer for not only making this residents day but giving us all a chance to enjoy such a special place. Thankyou from Helen.
A man and his dream fulfilled. Spectacular views, spectacular restoration, friendly reception from Andrew and Jennifer make the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway a great place to stop over at. My grandkids thoroughly enjoyed their trip “up the mountain” and saw their first kangaroos in the wild.
Husband and 16yr old son had a boys day out at this wonderful facility. They were inspired by the surrounds, layout and professionalism of the owners. Their interest in steam engines was expanded and the variety of machinery they were able to observe and learn about was amazing. The service was brilliant. The whole day totally enjoyed by both father and son. The ride on the engine, the knowledge of local history shared by the proprietor and the wonder ful hot chocolates made the day a very enjoyable one.
a great place to take clubs and groups for the museun views train ride and talk on steam engines and workings an ideal day trip from melbourne with lunch facilities available can highly reccommend geoff senior
Thankfully there are people who take dreams and turn them into reality! A great “Dindi” attraction for the little and big kids to play! An easy and pretty drive from Melbourne. Kanagroos on site, a thrill for overseas visitors, not to mention the train ride to the top for spectacular location for a picnic and panoramic views of the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
A lot of work and dedication has been put into this project. Well worth a visit for the young and old.
Highly recommend visiting….it is out-standing.
We have visited the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway and Museum and had a great time. A visit into the museum was very informative. We enjoyed some refreshment outside (it was a warm day). The trip to the top was fantastic - all too short, but the views from the top were spectacular.
The owners/managers were very informed on all aspects of the facility and were very easy to engage.
We have and will continue to recommend friends and family to pay a visit to Kerrisdale Mountain Railway.
Best Regards
Frank Bland
As a fellow railway enthusiast, I can commend Andrew and his team for a job very well done. The machinery is well presented and that view!!!! The trip would be worth while just for the view, but the added bonus is the working railway. Well done.
Just how good can it get? You cannot go past this pristine collection of working machinery from a bygone era restored to a standard that will leave you in awe. The quality of the workmanship and the cleanliness of the exhibits is enhanced by pleasant commentary from dedicated hosts who are only too happy to take time and talk about how this site has evolved, very friendly indeed. Do yourself a big favour, plan your visit to allow as much time as you can to savour this high quality attraction. Take in the spectacular views of surrounding countryside and stories of local folklore. KMR 10 out of 10.
A most magnificent Tourist Attraction that would appeal to all ages of visitors. So conveniently situated,a little over an hours drive from Melbourne, just off the Hume Highway. An inspirational dream come true.
A visit to KMR will delight anyone who enjoys mountain scenery and a trip on a spectacular narrow gauge railway. The attention to detail and presentation of the railway and museum is second to none. It is a pleasure to enjoy the exhibits restored and maintained by a true craftsman who takes great and passionate pride in his work. The cheery greeting and commentary by Andrew and Jennifer make any visit truly memorable and ensure repeat visits are inevitable. Well done A and J.
We were very impressed with the work and dedication that has been put into this attraction. The history of the steam engine and the working models that are on site are excellent. We also had a lot of fun riding the railway to the top of the hill and enjoying the great views across the valley. We highly recommend a visit for a fun time and a good laugh from the operators Mr. & Mrs. Forbes.
Devotion to Steam is a rarity in this day and age, these characters take it too the extreme. A comfortable drive out of town, big steaming machines….and then the view. A great day and a bit of a giggle, certainly worth stopping.
I was delighted to hear so much worthwhile info about those wonderful old steam engines. The machines are so well presented and in top condition - a real reflection of the knowledge and enthusiasm of the owners. Great day out!
A great experience, wonderful views from the train. A very warm welcome and very informative tour of the museum. Congratulations to Jennifer and Andrew for all their hard work and their friendliness. Will visit again.
Kerrisdale Mountain railway is obviously a labour of love which has taken many years to come to fruition . I was impressed by the infectious enthusiasm of staff , their willingness to answer any questions and the obvious pride in what has been achieved by a family concern with limited resources . This is refreshing in this day and age where “big money” so often tends to prevail . So thumbs up !
Kerrisdale Mountain Railway is a fantastic day out run by a lovely couple with more than a little passion, and a keen sense of fun. The view, the ambience and the hospitality are all great. The kids adored it, we’ll be back!
A fantastic day. Rail, views, history and fun. Andrew ability to impart the knowledge he has gained over time so enthusiastically - it is infectious. Jennifers devonshire teas and lunches are to die for, and all this while having a ride on a real (mini) train. Cannot recommend visiting Kerrisdale Mountain Railway highly enough - you will love it.
I could not be prouder of my parents achievements creating this amazing attraction for people of all walks of life to see there really is something for everyone. The attention to detail is amazing and well worth the visit the view is spectacular. Good work guys!!!!
Beautiful part of the world. The train is a fabulous way to see a little more of the country side and a fun mode of transport. While it’s a natural attraction for train enthusiasts it is also great for a family outing, or for those who just want to do something a little different. It’s also an easy day trip from Melbourne. Well done to all the people who worked so hard to get such a wonderful attraction up and running for all of us to share!
The folks operating the Kerrisdale Railway and Museum are genuine enthusiasts and display incredible patience when sharing their deep knowledge of the “good old days”. Andrew and Jennifer welcome you and treat you like a friend…a truly wonderful experience. I plan to visit again and enjoy that special smell of steam!
It reminds me of the “field of dreams” …build it and they will come.
What a fantastic place, the nephews and niece had a great time and so did l!
The train ride is wonderful, the views are amazing.
I take my hat off to the owners!
I will be back in a different season.
Many thanks
Christine Young
I have been in the tourism industry for 35 years and visited numerous Australian and Victorian attractions. This superbly presented attraction is something almost close to perfection in terms of the stunning scenery, impeccable presentation of the attraction, and most importantly the wonderful hospitallity and friendliness of Andrew and Jennifer the creators of this “mountain” gem.
Modelled on some of the famous mountain railways of Europe you really feel you’re on the roof top of Austyralia as the little train takes you up the mountain.
One of Victoria’s best little known attractions. Beautifully presented, this authentic steam and diesel railway along with its working steam museum is a credit to those who established it. Offering beautiful views of the surrounding countrysidej, the unique journey and fabulous hospitality offered is a great experience. Congratulations and thanks to Jennifer and Andrew for all their hard work and dedication.
Kerrsidale rail and steam museum is a living, breathing activity for all the family, and a great destination for any club or organisation looking for a new and exciting outing. Beautifully restored and maintained rail and steam exibits, friendly and informative staff, not to mention the spectacular views from the mountain top. But be warned - one visit will make you want to go back again and again.
