My love for the Barmah Forest & Nathalia district runs deep in my blood. I was first introduced to the area in 1968, loved, married & all our children were born here. We visited the forest at least 3 times a week & my love of photography, the wildflowers, trees, fauna & flora bring me back time after time. A bbq or picnic by the mighty Murray River…there is nothing nicer, especially at sunset. The brumbies grazed around us while we at e our evening meal, they were not afraid of us. We used to count and check on the cattle and how they were doing, but not any more…for they are gone now and the forest is empty. I have photographed the wild pigs but they are probably gone too. The kangaroos & emus & the elusive koala still thrill me, the only enemy to the forest is FIRE..FIRE…FIRE…….

The Barmah Forest has been my ‘big’ back yard for over 30 years. I have mustered cattle for many years and enjoyed the clean open air. I have camped many times over the years with or without my horse,. The BArmah Brumbies and the cattle and other animals are a must to see while out visiting the BArmah Forest.

A great small town with all the facilities anyone could want. Bring your golf sticks for a round on a 9 hole course with greens for only $10. Canoe and fish from the Riverside Caravan Park on the creek that runs through town. Visit the Historical Museum. A choice of 2 Hotels for meals and a top Bakehouse for lunches, morning & afternoon teas. Events include New Years Eve Carnival & Art Show with a large fireworks display. Easter Bush Bash & tennis tournament. Agricultural Show every 1st Saturday of October. Plenty of walking tracks. Barmah Muster Dance & Yarn Spinning in May. Take a drive to Barmah Forest to see abundant Kangaroos, Koalas, Wild horses, Pigs, Deer and a lot of varied bird life which are very active early morning and sundown. Camp on Murray River for no cost for fishing and craying in season. Visit Historical Echuca and Monichino’s Winery. .

I have been enjoying the Barmah forest for relaxing, camping, fishing and seeing native animals since I was a small boy. Thoroughly enjoyable and looking forward to taking my small children to enjoy it for many years to come.

Barmah Forest is part of the Murray River floodplain just north of Nathalia in northern Victoria and is a heritage wetland area. It is particularly interesting for bush walkers, campers, and for fishing and water sports. It has been well managed for multi-purpose uses for many decades and it would be a pity to see any changes to its current management. It is a great place to come, relax and enjoy a natural bush setting.
