Wrap up and explore the wonderful colours of autumn at The National Rhododrenron Gardens, Olinda. We often see the lyrebirds if all is quiet. The local deli will pack a picnic, perhaps eat by the lake and share with the family of ducks. We love the gardens in all seasons , there is always something special to see!

The perfect place to go for a lovely walk, and one of the most gorgeous picnic venues in Victoria. The National Rhododendron Gardens is amazing property with huge lawns and sweeping views, the garden is beautiful and full of cool climate garden plants. Giant eucalypts connect into forest areas explaining the presence of echidnas, lyrebirds and occasional wallaby. My favourite time to visit is a sunny day in winter, but the autumn tones of May are incredible and spring is really the ultimate colour therapy experience, so I have purchased an annual pass to visit every day of the year!
These gardens are one of Melbourne best kept secrets, it is full of horticultural bounty and it is easy to find a secluded spot to contemplate how good life is.
With the huge acreage that these gardens have it is a beautiful walk, particularly in Spring when all the flowers are out. Definately worth a visit by everyone.
There are very few places that you can go to hear nothing except lyrebirds scratching through mulch or calling to their friends. But you need to actually drive past the busy townships of Olinda or Sassafras and get out of the car to have a walk around. Somewhere like the Rhododendron Gardens is a perfect place to experience “quiet” and all of the magnificent views which are only complimented by the mature plant species that you can find in a special place like that.
