A walk linking Portland to Nelson via the forests and return via the coast was conceived 27 years ago by Sam Bruton and Bill Golding. During those 27 years hundreds of past and present local volunteers have worked tirelessly maintaining and improving this walking track for the enjoyment of the Glenelg Shire community and for our visitors.
What has inspired these volunteers is the natural beauty of Portland, Nelson and the coastal and forest environments, together with the generous support of the local communities and businesses.
So we urge you to come and see our picturesque area in one of the states most natural and beautiful settings and experience the natural wonders that await you whilst wandering along the track that we have prepared especially for people just like you.

Pristine and “undicovered”
Ample accommodation. Surrounded by bush close to beach and river. Nature at it most unspoiled. Still close enough for many day trips to varied loactions.

Nelson offers peace & relaxation in a natural unspoilt environment, away from the concrete jungle, at the mouth of the Glenelg River and surrounded by National Parks. At night you can look up at the Stars without the distraction of city lighting.
Not too many tourists and one of the best kept secrets in Victoria

Nelson is a very beautiful and quiet place. Just the place to chill out, away from any city. The river is a very special place. Apart from the fabulous cruises, boat and canoe hire, fishing for bream and mulloway, and other activities, you can also book a camp site at one of the many locations along the renowned Glenelg River, which forms part of the lower Glenelg National Park.
This is a truly beautiful part of Australia

I love Nelson… one of the only towns along the coast that hasn’t quite been discovered by the Melbournians yet!!!
I have spent my last two birthdays having a weekend getaway at the Nelson Hotel… fantastic budget style accommodation, friendly hosts, great atmosphere and food.
We always go fishing, do some touring into South Australia, visit the Glenelg National Park and always spend some time relaxing in the hotel!

Nelson is a quiet relaxing out-of-the-way township. But by far, it’s most impressive attraction is the Nelson River Cruise to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves. This relaxing cruise passes through impressive gorges and spectacular scenery.
