I have one word for you - ‘HYGGELIG’ ….. a Fabulous Danish word that has no single english word in translation …. it requires many …. it means, Cosy, Atmospheric, Welcoming, A Warm Fuzzy Feeling, A Feeling of Contentment….. Now I ask you who could want more!
find that special something for a special someone at the rose street market.
Just to clarify I am not a local to the Fitzroy nor am I particularly interested in markets and I have no affinity to the Rose Street Market in any way, but an interesting thing happened to me a few month ago.
After much persuasion I found myself being dragged along by my girlfriend (go figure) to the infamous “Rose Street Market”. . . . apparently it’s the hub for all things “cool” and “chic”.
So with much reluctance, traveling down Brunswick keeping our eyes open trying to spot the tiny street opposite Bimbo Deluxe aptly named “Rose Street” We come across our 1st taste of the TRSAM . The leather clad, seemingly drunk poet “Grant” standing on the corner reciting poetry and handing out flyers for the market. I take the flyer, careful to avoiding making contact with Grants hand.
Walking up Rose street I am surprised to find this narrow side street bustling with people from all walks of life, walking, riding, skating even Segway-ing their way to and from the market.
Pushing our way through the crowd we manage to squeeze ourselves into position and make our way through the big purple gate carefully avoiding the cactus stand to my right. The 1st thing you notice is the huge graffiti wall to the right of you that dominates the scene in pink, black, grey and white with the words “Seen it all.. not at all” or something to that effect, looking alot like something from a 1970’s breakdance movie than market?
As we make our way through the outdoor section it struck me that this wasn’t like every other market I had been to. TRSAM wasn’t a miss match of stalls on top of stalls all stocking jewelry made of old forks and spoons and wind chimes. it is actually a very well thought out space, with each stall setup neatly and effectively showcasing the artists products, and more importantly VARIETY every stall has something different and nothing is doubled up on. Oh and each stall comes complete with outdoor umbrella’s!
Moving through the outdoor section, we make our way towards 2 gigantic Fire station doors, which leads you into another large interior warehouse space with tall ceilings and concrete floor, full of even more interesting items such as beautifully bound notebooks, hand crafted rocking chairs, amazing hand made lamps and lampshades, sunglasses and even more graffiti covered walls.
As we glance at the arts, crafts, fashion, furniture and fauna on display .. I hear my other favorite F word.. FOOD!.. I followed my nose.. the smell of what I thought was foccacia let me to the Rose Street Cafe.. I manouver towards the cafe and I hear someone say “Even if there was no market here you would come for the food alone.” As I glance over the shoulder of the pregnant woman in front ordering the flowerless orange cake I see that most of the staff seem to be of the same Ilk.. could this be a family affair? Then I saw it.. “Home made Lasagna” ahh it must be I thought. “What would you like?” a small blonde girl quipped as I wiped the saliva from the corner of my mouth.
15 mins later I had scoffed the home made Lasagna and was half way through a glass of Red wine. I had lost the girlfriend some 30 mins ago but I was quite content on sitting here admiring the sights and smells of what is essentially a great atmosphere to be around. The variety of products on offer is very impressive, and there really is something out there for everyone.
So in conclusion TRSAM mangaed to charm an old cynic like myself…
Alleluia I am a beleiver in The Rose Street Artists Market, I recommend it to everyone and anyone!
Word of advice. just hide your wallet from your wife / girlfriend. I found out the hard way!
I voted for the Rose Street Artists Market because I think it’s just so under-rated. It’s full of amazing, quality work from talented, local artists. It’s my favourite market in Melbourne without doubt.
A secret garden where Melbourne’s diverse creative talents mingle like tea and honey. Visit this Mad-Hatter’s urban nook and you will definitely come up roses.
Great mix of art, design and craft — not your conventional market…. some really high end work as well as everyday design pieces…. Check out the café as well — ask for the homemade lasagne or mushroom and white truffle lasagne… mmm..
