It is the highlight of our calender, not just for the sailing, but to have some time out from work to do what we enjoy. Sharing Sailing, Food, and Drinks with friends. We start planning for the next one as soon as the current one has finished.

As the second largest and longest running sailing regatta in the world, it is truely one of Victoria’s secret, hidden gems. The event is held over several days from Melbourne to Geelong with most of the action centred on Corio Bay which has easy vantage points from many parts of the shore and water. For sailors in Australia only the Sydney to Hobart single off shore race rates higher and is now near as spectator friendly as Skandia Geelong Week.

As a new comer to Geelong and sailing novice, this year was my first Skandia experience and I sailed on “French Connection” skippered by Brian Marshman and his wonderful crew. While still coming to terms with my sea legs and learning the difference between sheets and halyards, I was extemely privileged to participate in the Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong under spinnaker. The anticipation of the start, the energy and excitement getting underway, the vision of the whole fleet under spinnaker, are all memories that will never be forgotten. It truely was a wonderful experience, and if you are lucky enough to be offered a positon grab it, even if you are the scullery wench! Otherwise just enjoy the activities on shore, the great entertainment and the hospitality of RGYC.

For nearly a decade I have enjoyed sailing in Skandia week passage race from Williamstown as a crew member. I loved it so much that I finally bought a boat so that my husband and I could experience the race together. Last year I decided that I wanted to volunteer during Skandia week on the days I wasn’t racing. This was so much fun. Whether you are a competitor, volunteer or just want to enjoy the shore side entertainment, Skandia week provides a wide range of activities and options to select from. It really does have something for everyone. Do yourself a favour and come join in the experience.

I travelled from Hobart to be in Geelong for the Skandia Geelong week including their Wooden Boat Festival. I am also a board member of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. The Skandia Geelong week was an ausome experience for both those on the water and those on the hard. It was a great family experience and gave many locals and visitors an opportunity to see first hand some great sailing and many world class wooden boats restored to perfection. They ranged from samll rowing and steam boats to Storm Bay. The working wooden boat tent was a great hit with many having an opportunity to view many of the wooden baot and sailing crafts of years gone by. The hospitality extended to all by the Royal Geelong Sailing Clup and Geelong people generally was very intoxicating in the sense that all around the foreshore people were enthralled by the specatcular. Keep supporting this event as it will go a long way for Victorian Tourism.

We all know that Melbourne is the yacht racing capital of Australia. We don’t have to shout and scream about it but Skandia Geelong Race Week attracts at least five times more participants than any other yacht race in Australia. It’s probably time we shared our secret with the rest of the country (and the world).

I just love the atmosphere on the Waterfront every year at Skandia. The weather is pretty much always hot and sunny during the day, balmy at night. There’s something for everyone, within or outside the boundaries of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, a real carnival, so everyone feels a part of what is a world renowned, international event. I don’t sail myself but always get caught up in the excitement of the event. It’s fabulous having so many visitors from all over Australia and the world descend on our beautiful city all at once, and the partying……………………..I always look forward to Skandia!

Sailing is was so important to Geelong in bygone years taking the wool and produce away to the world
For years the yachts participating in the Melbourne to Geelong Australian weekend was magic but now that the foreshore reflects the sailing and land lubbers joined together in a celebration that all can enjoy and be part is very good extension. The week really does show off the Corio Bay and foreshore to the fullest. I think the carnival atmosphere is wonderful.

Skandia Geelong Week brings our city of Geelong to life. It’s amazing to see so many people enjoying the best our city has to offer, with its picturesque waterfront, live entertainment all weekend, great food and smiles all round. It attracts a crowd from all over Victoria, and watching the yachts competing around Corio Bay is a sight to behold. After dark, the Yacht Club comes alive and the party atmosphere is as exciting as any I’ve experience across the globe. Truly world class and the highlight of my summer in Geelong.

Not only is there the thrilling racing, the entertainment is totally massive - there is too many to mention, the atmosphere is carnival / party like, everyone so friendly it is truly a Bostin’ place to be.

This is a massive on and off water event - everyone is welcome to go and sail and then you come ashore and enjoy all the entertainment - bands, comics, sideshows, aerobatic displays, fireworks - you name it, Skandia Geelong Week has it, including great food stalls. It’s during the holiday period in January, so the atmosphere is very carnival like. Anyone can arrive and ask around to see if they can sail in the event - it’s a great way to celebrate the Australia Day long weekend - an experience and a half!

I have been a regular entrant in this event and it is one that I really enjoy. The experience of coming into Corio Bay last year through the Hopetoun Channel by Point Henry, with beautiful spinnakers flying and boats gunwhale to gunwhale is a picture that is indelibly imprinted in my brain. It must have been a beautiful sight from on shore, but being in it was very special. I have seen a lot of Victoria and this event is top of my list.

A fantastic event held over the Australia Day weekend. Great for all the family, and people of all ages, held during the best time of the year. The picturesk Corio Bay is an ideal setting and over the whole week there are events all along the foreshore. Amencely popular with locals, people from all over the nation, it is one of Victoria’s truly international events.

I never before realised the scope of this event until I actually took part in it this year. To see the boats lined up at the start of the major race in full sail, including spinnakers, with a backdrop of blue skies and the shoreline of Williamstown was breathtaking. Then to witness the opposite when coming into the beautiful Corio Bay was stunning. This is definitely not a sport of kings, I am not a wealthy person so everyone has the opportunity to partake in this event. Even if one does not sail, they can still come along to all the activities that the weekend has to offer.
