I recently stayed at a short term accommodation place on The Esplandade St Kilda. Its an Art Deco 1 bedroom, fully furnished place with views to the Baty and minutes to both Acland and Fitzroy Street.

The apartment comes complete with linen, full kitchen and a bottle of wine! All this for $85 a nite.

I visited the Port Phillip Council owned Linden Art Gallery today, as I do monthly, and I was the only person there other than the attendant. This is a common problem with this not for profit gallery that just seems to be going through the motions showing so called “innovative” art that few wants to look at. In summer it is closed for a month or so just when the crowds in St Kilda are at their peak. The council needs to start to run it on commercial lines, showing and auctioning/selling the art for the artists but with the artists paying a display fee.

St Kilda has a number of 19th century gardens; the most popular is St Kilda Botanical Gardens (sometimes called Blessington Gardens as its in Blessington St). It has many mature trees, a rose garden, large hothouse, a small lake and children’s play equipment. Nearby Catani Gardens on the foreshore on Beaconsfield Pde has well established trees, Captain Cooks memorial (the great Royal Navy explorer who fortunately claimed Australia for Britain in 1770 before other nations did) and a rotunda. Plenty of car parking nearby, including in Pier Rd, and at dusk observing the little possums in the gardens and the penguins on St Kilda Pier is a delight. These gardens are accessible by the No 96 tram from the CBD too.

St Kilda Festival and the Gay Pride March are held in St Kilda in mid to late summer each year. The St Kilda Festival attracts about 300,000 young people to this music, dance and sideshow event while the Gay Pride March, held on another Sunday, attracts about 100,000 people to the Fitzroy St parade. You can even leave the car at home and travel there via tram (No 96 from CBD) or train (Balaclava Station is the closest). I am middle aged and straight but attend annually. Salsa dancing is increasing popular at the St Kilda Festival along with new young bands, great food and beach events. Drinks at pubs and cafes but no booze in the streets folks.

I agree with comments 1 & 2 generally however drunks at night can sometimes be a problem. Over the next few years the nearby St Kilda Triangle site will be developed into a new entertainment precinct which visitors may enjoy but many St Kilda residents oppose its construction. St Kilda is nicer without turning it into another Chadstone shopping mall.

A walk along the St Kilda pier and foreshore is invigorating, gives you a great sense of the place and people and you can see the city from here. St Kilda is surrounded by great places to wine and dine, and great places to hear live bands. Base Backpackers is pretty cool too.

A pleasant sandy beach to walk along, a long pier from which to look over the sea, some penguins at hand, Acland Street cake shops nearby, and it is all accessible by public transport
