Hidden high up in the Strzelecki Ranges and northwest of Yarram, Central Gippsland, is the 1625-hectare Tarra Bulga National Park. The Visitor Centre is the starting point for many easy walks in this mountain ash forest, and the nearby Tarra Valley picnic ground offers an alternate range of walks in lush tree fern glades and rainforest, plus the picturesque Tarra Falls.

We simply love Tarra Bulga. In Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring this amazing National bushland and wildlife make a perfect day out for the whole family and friends. We are drawn back to this wonderful National Park time and time again.

The very best of our remaining natural bushland. A must for our visitors to see. To spend a couple of hoursw in the parks in the middle of a fantastic summer thunder storm complete with sensational lightning and torrential rain was a superb experience.

We never tire of Tarra Bulga National Park - it remains just as unbelievably beautiful every time we return. The Tarra Valley camping ground on the banks of the babbling Tarra River is the friendliest camp park we have ever stayed in. The rainforest walk is amazing with towering eucalypts and mountain ash, lush ferns, lichens and moss, streams, waterfalls and bridges. We have picnic lunches in the pristine parks, and in the evenings sit around a cosy campfire toasting marshmallows with our friends…Tarra Bulga is a truly magical place to unwind.

Tarra Bulga National Park is a world in a world. You step onto one of it’s paths and you’re transported to a time before pollution and global warming, where everything knew its place and lived in harmony.
Lyrebirds, wallabies and small fish can all be seen if you look in the right places, and if you sit still long enough, you may even see a Lyrebird dance.
It’s a place where fairies could live, a place that invites you to dream as you wander along it’s paths.
A place so magical, you cannot help but be drawn back to it, again and again and again. If it were possible to live there, you would, simply because it’s beautiful, and there is none like it in all the earth.

A photographer’s paradise! This place is magic and like stepping back in time with the huge tree ferns. When you see the landscape shrouded in fog you feel like you have stepped back into prehistoric times. Don’t stick to the main paths, take the less travelled paths and enjoy the beauty.

A wonderful place to spend a day. Walking or having a picnic there is something for everyone. From the city people who need to stop and refresh to an exciting place for children to explore and learn and exercise.
I have been many times and am never disappointed. Taking overseas visitors to this park is always top of the tourist list. Their reaction to the beauty of the area is a wonderful site to see.

My husband and i needed a weekend getaway and this was by far the most relaxing peaceful and beautiful place to go. We stayed at a wondeful B&B tarra valley rainforest retreat. The hosts were friendly and helpful and recommended some great places to see and feed us the most delicious food. Highly recommended by us.

My family and I have been camping in the Tarra Bulga National Park for the last few years. The scenery is breathtaking and wonderful, with the tall trees, ferns and wildlife. With two yound children, there rae lots to do including waterfalls, milking cows, plenty of tree/fern lined walks, etc, etc. Relaxing for the kids and for us. The friendly people of the Tarra Bulga caravan park and Tarra Bulga Guesthouse also make our stay warm family affair.

I first visited in 1963 as a child and wondered how such a place could exist (English immigrant).
Returned decades later to find the park expanded (now nearer 2500 Ha.) with wonderful areas of regrowth surrounding the original primeval forest.
All the comments are true… it really feels like a dinosaur will step out from behind the next tree.
Walk the fern gully below the suspension bridge and wonder at the Myrtle Beech trees over 1000 years old.
A hidden treasure two hours drive from Melbourne.

Whether it be hot, cold or raining the soul of this place is with you. The sheer contrast between ferns and trees is magic. One one occasion we actually saw a Lyre Bird, blinked and it was gone. Nature is truly amazing.

Aaaah! Relaxation. Green, green, green, green - all year round. Rare and/or simply staggering flora or fauna - some stunning colours in the mosses and lichens easily seen along the walking tracks.
The weather varies - either moist or wet!
Get there early in the day and have the place to yourself, or often even anytime on a weekday when it’s not during the holidays.
Short trip from the Latrobe Valley, Sale or Yarram, each with its own unique character and story to tell - combining well for a long weekend away from Melbourne or for the ‘locals’ to get away.

    Spot the hidden fairies!
Not the only temperate rainforest in Victoria, but its one of the few remaining places that still feels unspoilt, with a diversity of species. The road access is easy - no need for a 4WD, and particularly easy on the eye too as we become part of the rainforest as we climb further upwards.
Not disability accessible (wheelchairs or prams) for the walking track, but all of us can appreciate the area from the different carparks and BBQ areas (and the tracks were all OK for me on crutches). The air really crackles with freshness and the wildlife is absolutely magical.
The information centre is great for the kids and other visitors to learn of the rainforest, the area and our heritage.
Accommodation in the area really is wonderful - from high end B&B’s through to budget camping all nearby.
Overall a great place to visit.

A beautiful unspoilt area fully deserving of a number one vote. Exhilerating strolling, wonderful scenery and all the time imaging the ‘yowie’ that might appear, or perhaps the much-touted panther! Oz as it used to be. Let’s keep it that way for the future.

The suspension bridge is gorgeous. It really fits into the surrounds. Last time we were there it was later in the afternoon and we saw little sugar gliders, a lyre bird, possum - just great and for us worth the trip.

I remember this beautiful park from many years ago, when I went with my mother & grandmother for a picnic. These are now very special memories as they have both passed away. I remember our girls day out at Tarra Bulga National Park, walking across the suspension bridge and looking at the falls. It is a beautiful part of the world. Even the car parks are picturesque!

A spectacular, serene, pristine part of the state of Victoria. Many walking tracks, creeks, water falls, barbecue areas, a swinging bridge, magnificent vegetation. One of the last areas of Victoria untouched by tourism. Caravan parks and bed and breakfasts’ in the immediate area. Heaven on earth.

I read about it in RACV magazine and went there soon after. Could not believe a rain forest could exist in Victoria’s arid conditions. Saw what the meaning of canopy is for the first time although I have seen it on TV (Amazon). The walk way enables us to get immersed and the hanging bridge is superb in the pictures. The rice and curry we made under the canopy was so tasty, we have gone there almost every year and done the same. My ranking would be Number 1 spot in Victoria.

I remembered this place from a single memorable day when I visited with my father. I was 10 yrs old (now 57) Passing the turnoff recently I just had to return once more, prepared for disappointment as in my memory Tarra Valley was the most beautiful place I had ever seen..I was amazed and thrilled to find it preserved just as I remembered! An unbelievably beautiful, truly spectacular place that had captured my imagination so long ago. It’s a time capsule of what Victoria must have been like millions of yrs ago- a wonderful web of ferny walks, crystal clear streams and amazing vast roadsides covered in the brightest of green ferns. Reached by a drive over spectacular moutains it’s like another little known world. The caravan park was great, cabins cosy and the day just amazing!

I am an inbound tourguide and have seen most ‘corners’ of Australia-this still rates as one of the best and most intact national parks to me. It feels like you are stepping back 1000 years, and about to run into a dinosaur.

Tarra Bulga National Park is a hidden wonder of Victoria. With it’s tranquil environment, wildlife, abundance of fern gullies and amaizing walks along the many walking tracks provided with an untouched, natural landscape of canapies of ferns and Australian gums. A beautifull peacefull place to spend a quiet weekend or bring the family and get back to nature in the many affordable accommodation opportunities available from camping to log cabins. With only a relative short drive from Melbourne and Gippsland towns, it is the perfect place to unwind. We are repeat visitors to the park and always find the hospitallity with all the locals very friendly and welcoming.

These parks are one of the wonders of Victoria. Nearby caravan parks have comfortable and affordable accommodation, while the walks in the park through fern-filled valleys have many birds including lyrebirds to delight the ear and eye. There are lots of other attractions in Gippsland but the Tarra-Bulga area is outstanding and surprisingly peaceful.
