Maldon is a fantastic historic living town. Walk the main street and surrounds to view historic buildings or simply find a cafe to sample the fine local food and award wining wines. If hiking and nature is your preference there are plenty of walking and bike tracks to keep you entertained. Personally I prefer to sit in front of a nice warm fire with some local produce and a glass of local red!

What a great town to relive the past! The whole town has a fantastic feel about it: the restaurants, the shops, the steam train and the architecture. A visit here is so relaxing; it’s a place where you can just leave your troubles behind.

Historic Maldon with it authentic “living” streetscapes, offers fine local wines and produce, quirky art and memorable dining opportunities.

A visit to the Information Centre is always rewarded with friendly advice. Welcoming volunteers are eager to explain and suggest the best possible combination of accommodation, activities and culinary experiences.

With so much to offer Maldon is perfect for a quick day trip, a leisurely weekend or a longer stay exploring the historic goldfields region.

Maldon’s 19th century streetscape is the best preserved example of a real gold mining town. Unlike recreated villages and attractions, Maldon’s heritage has been preserved and is a real living town which earned it the title of Australia’s first “notable” town by the National Trust .. Cosy cafes, gallerys and fabulous speciality shops line the main street and a steam train provides a nostalgic link form Maldon to nearby Castlemaine. Festivals and events are held throughout the year, many foccusing on the varietys of local food and wines produced around Maldon (a Taste of Gold brochure is a must have to take a drive through the countryside experiencing all the vineyards and farms!). Numerous mine sites have been preserved for you to explore and you can even take a canlde lit tour underground in Carman’s Tunnel!

We have fond memories of a stay in Maldon (in the MG room) and a walk around that historic main street where time has stood still.

I used to live in Ballarat as a teenager, and this is like returning home in a way- love all the historical aspects, old architecture and gold connections- I love the whole area from Bendigo and Maryborough down to Ballarat and over to Daylesford. A whole different lifestyle from the big city.
