The Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld was originally a staging post for Cobb & Co coaches, now a recently renovated historic hotel. Features of the hotel are a fine dining restaurant, quality accommodation units with many special touches and stylish conference facilities. The location is exceptional – set at the base of the Grampians National Park. The stunning new architecture blends contemporary styling with some century old sections. Floor to ceiling glass in the main hotel provides breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. Situated only 1 hour from the Great Ocean Road, and a pleasant 3 hour drive from Melbourne, the Royal Mail is an ideal short break destination.

Coming a long distance form the other end of the state, Mallacoota, its fair to say that this is a long way to go for a meal. For every km in the car the experience at the Royal mail matches with delight and an abundance of taste sensation. The Degustation menu cooked by Dan Hunter and his crew was just sublime, a truly out of body experience, likened to that of seeing an exhibition by your favourite artist. The accommodation was perfect, we ended up booking an extra night, just to savor the whole experience. Also to round off an amazing weekend the local baby sitter who was arranged prior to our arrival was a lovely young local girl who did a fantastic job looking after our son. Highly recommended.
Despite dining at a few highly regarded/awarded restaurants in Australia and overseas this still is our best experience. The food and matching wines (in generous measure) were superb but the friendly and knowledge staff made it even more special. Then we were able to stroll a few metres to our room knowing that in the morning we would wake to the view of the Grampians, and be able to drive and walk around them after a great breakfast. A nice touch was that the staff had the names of the flowers taken from the lovely native gardens around the hotel that were in the vase at the front desk to assist the ignorant!
Relaxing friendly atmosphere in the view of the majestic grampians. Fresh food to enhance the great dinning. Winelist of grand status.Relax by the fire or in out side courtyard depending on the weather .Watch the wildlife from firstclass rooms or balcony . Repeat visits a must.
We are fortunate enough to travel overseas and eat in some of the worlds great restaurants, the meal we had at the Royal Mail was world class, fantastic!!!
In a tiny country town there is a hidden treasure – the Royal Mail. Here we found gourmet food served by local natural and friendly staff – a fine room with an impressive view of Mt Sturgeon and walks both simple and challenging for all
tastes. Yes we will be back again
We keep returning year after year its a fabulous place for thewhole family to enjoy.
A wonderful start to a fabulous Easter long weekend this year. Food was exceptional – no wonder it’s a “destination” restaurant.
We return again and again for the genuine hospitality, the natural beauty and for the best food in Australia! The Royal Mail deserves top spot!
The best birthday dinner yet.
Lovely friendly accommodation/ food/ wine package. Delightful garden walks – we could take the dogs – on leads because of the wildlife about. Comfortable rooms – choose one with the stunning mountain views. We were there during the hot February blackouts, and spent a couple of dark evening hours in the pool before bed.
The cottages showcase nature at its best. Leave the city behind and experience the serenity of Mt Sturgeon and all its glory. Oh, and the food, WOW!
Wonderful place to stay, amazing food with perfectly matched wine – definitely a favourite!
Exquisite environment, exquisite food- it’s simply the place you want to be.
Thoroughly deserves top marks – Food, wine and accommodation all excellent. Well done Dan and all the staff.
Views, wine, food in a fabulous little spot called Dunkeld. If Anthony Bourdin thinks it’s a fine establishment and worth travelling from the other side of the world for, I can only agree with him! He should know…
We stayed in the ‘loft apartment’(?) with the gorgeous open fire that was most appropriate on the weekend of our visit. And the degustation dinner was memorable!
Because of polio many tears ago I have difficulty in walking and using normal facilities. We found all of the facilities most user friendly. The staff were most friendly and helpful. The accommodation was top class ,with great mountain views from the unit. The tasting meal in the restaurant was the best we have ever had.
The Royal Mail Hotel should be on everyones ‘Bucket List’!
The Royal Mail Hotel offers the traveller a place to stay and recoup as it would have done in the past when the carriage stopped there on its way to Melbourne or Adelaide.
This picturesque spot offers you sublime dining in a world class restaurant with stunning views of the majestic Grampians from your hotel accomodation.
It is a must for any weary (or not so weary) traveller to recharge their batteries and renew their zest for life.
Fabulous location, brilliant meals and accommodation options to suit all circumstances!
We have stayed at the Royal Mail many times and have always found the accommodation excellent and the staff most friendly and obliging.
A wonderful place to stop
Beautifull area. Fantastic hotel with great accommodation and superb meals!
Have visited the Royal Mail Hotel many times. The food, staff and location is second to none.We are very fortunate to have this first class venue in this great part of Victoria. There is no doubt we will visit again.
My wife & I have stayed at the Royal Mail Hotel on quite a few occassions over the last 3 or 4 years. We have enjoyed our stays here every time & find the modern rooms have a relaxing feel to them, especially with the magnificent views of the Grampians out on the room’s back verandah.
The staff make your stay welcoming, and what can I say about the food, this is where the word excellent comes to mind every time. Part of the relaxed charm & quaintness of staying here is the lovely township of Dunkeld as well.
We have also stayed at the Mt. Sturgeon bluestone cottages, which are part of the Royal Mail Hotel accomodations group, and found this to be both picturesque & peaceful.
Graeme & Leigh drummond
Wow -what a place -the view of Mount Sturgeon is fantastic – only bettered by the service and comfort at the Royal Mail
Mixing business with pleasure – what a great opportunity -stay at the Royal Mail
We’ve stayed at the Royal Mail a couple of times, amd thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the food and wine and the hospitality. We left feeling rested and refreshed.
The Grampians provide a stunning backdrop this user friendly resort. Ambience superb and French Blue never tasted better.
I have stayed a number of times at the Royal Mail. It is a fantastic venue with a great views and meals. A great experience whether there for a conference or a weekend get away.
I came across the Royal Mail on my travels with work. It is sensational. I had such an awesome experience my Husband & I went back there together while we were on Holidays. It is stunning – beautiful location, wonderful service and a dining experience to die for. We cant wait to go back again!!
Spent a weekend as a retirement celebration with 4 friends (and my wife!). The whole experience will remain a fond memory for the rest of our lives. The degustation was simply outstanding, what a display! Brilliant food well matched with the wines and excellent service
Set amongst beautiful surroundings with views of the Grampians peaks from your balcony, Royal Mail Hotel was “simply stunning”. We had a very relaxing stay enjoying all the fine food and wines the Royal Mail Restaurant was famous for. Excellent service and top class accommodation. Well worth the drive.
As a group of 5 couples, we stayed 2 nights at The Homestead. Beautifully restored bluestone buliding with log fires and elegant furnishings. Pick up and drop off from the restaurant. Great food, suburb wine list and attentative service from staff. For a large group recommend the Homestead. Relaxing scenary, a few reds, some nibbles, good friends. What could be better?
The Royal Mail is one of the most rewarding dining experiences and weekend escape in the entire country. Everything from the warm reception through to the most exciting menu’s, fabulous service and one of the most envied wine lists around. Thoroughly recommended and an absolute must for thst special occassion.
We’ve been to the Royal Mail a few times and each time we enjoy something new – it just gets better. The setting was glorious. My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages. The cottage faced Mt Sturgeon on one side, and faced sheep paddocks with the huge red river gums on the other side. We had the most wonderfully relaxing and romantic time for our anniversary. This time we went for the de-gustation menu with matching wines and it blew our minds. We love good food and wine, but this was the cleverest and the tastiest meal we have ever had at a restaurant. We would never have thought of matching some of the flavours we had and they worked so wonderfully well – it was simply sensational. We savoured every mouthful. The staff were attentive but not annoyingly so – we still enjoyed our privacy. We will return again and again – we’ve been telling all our friends to go to the Royal Mail Hotel too.
The Royal Mail is a truly memorable hotel… an experience which is easily recalled long after the visit has passed. The closeness with nature makes this a stand out experience…huge windows frame the landscape beautifully, and with no people or buildings in sight, it feels like it’s just you and the bush. Great idea to provide maps for private bush walking trails nearby…kangaroos hopping by make this a special experience even for an aussie…overseas visitors would find this a treat. All this and outstanding food, wine, staff, with stylish interiors and artwork…excellent.
An ideal getaway from the hustle of the city where we could catch up at leisure with a group of foodie friends, enjoying our city creature comforts surrounded and refreshed by the timeless unique beauty of the Grampians.
Set at the foot of the Grampians the food, accomodation and location make for a fantastic and unique experience. Move over Ferran Adriá we’ve got Dan Brown
Just a pure gastronomical experience every time….BEST food I’ve EVER tasted, super service, historical experience and breathtaking views. What made the meal so extra super was the different wines that just so, so complemented each course. Hopefully not too long before we return..Lil
We are getting married at the Royal Mail in January, we went for lunch there once and fell in love with the friendly atmosphere and the spectacular scenery. When we have our 50th wedding anniversary it will be remembered as a special place with fond memories.
A great place to stay, it has accommodation to suit all budgets, we have stayed in the cottage with friends, in the grand homestead at Mt Sturgeon with the ‘ yabbi divers’ a cycling group, the back packers with our family and at the hotel in one of the rooms. On each occassion we have either had lovely meals in the dining room, bistro and conference centre, and great breakfasts at the royal mail or delicious continental breakfast at our accommodation. I highly recommend staying at the Royal Mail and the views are amazing
Our friends recently had their wedding at the royal mail hotels function centre, had an absolutely fantastic day, everything catered for. Stayed there that night, waking upto an amazing view of the mountains right outside our bedroom window. We are also lucky enough to live only 30 minutes away so we have induldged in the lunch and dinner menus a few times, leaving extremely satisfied after every meal.
I would definately give the Royal Mail Hotel top scores in all areas!
Had lunch at this great hotel, going to stay overnight next time to really make the most of it
The Royal Mail Hotel is simply a delight!
We have stayed many times and it just keeps getting better and better. The best food in Australia combined with great accommodation – the trifecta won with its endlessly stunning views.
The location and especially the food (not to mention the fanatastic wine cellar!) and service make the Royal Mail a no-brainer when it comes to choosing a place to go to escape for a magic moment out of the city!
We stayed as a family at the Royal Mail, and had a wonderful weekend. The children happily entertained by the amazing surrounds of the Grampian parks, the lovely pool, and few local shops. We were treated to a delicious and interesting adult dinner with friends. A great oasis and place to escape to. I would recommend the experience for both families, couples and friends wanting to enjoy one another’s company in a refreshing setting.
The Royal Mail is worth the drive, and if the train stopped there, we’d go every time we visit Melbourne from Adelaide. We love it! Fabulous food, comfortable accommodation with sensational views, and a great value wine list full of gems.
simply amazing!
the food, the best in the country…
the service, eclipses the food…
the wine list and matching wines, a drinkers paradise…
Royal Mail Hotel is an unforgettable experience. Set at the foot of the Grampians, with rooms overlooking Mt Sturgeon, it combines the best of a nature retreat with the exquisite creativity of chef Dan Hunter and his team. During our last visit in the heatwave of late January 2009, an 8 hour power cut throughout the region started just as we were sitting down for our meal. We were served a peerless meal even though the team were working by candlelight in 45C plus temperatures. As on our first visit, the somellier”s wine matching was superlative and the service excellent. Breakfasts, including the Grampians Pure sheep’s yoghurt by local Glen Thompson farmer, is great too. The Hotel offers a range of walks on their property and you’ll be enchanted by the swamp wallabies. We are looking forward to bringing friends there for a couple of days in early November. It’s an irresistable holiday in a beautiful part of Victoria.
The Royal Mail Hotel offers very classy accommodation, surrounded by native
vegetation and spectacular Australian scenery. The restuarant compliments
this wonderful experience. Simply the best.
Best meal I’ve ever had!
“Like an oasis in the desert is the Royal Mail to the Western Districts” After the drive from Melbourne the Royal Mail was a fabulous place to stop. The food, wine accommodation was all excellent. We stayed one night in the Hotel and one night in the cottages and both were equally wonderful. One dining experience in the restaurant and one in the bistro left us wanting to return
We had a great visit to the Royal Mail. The accommodation was great together with stunning views. The food was sublime – my husband had the degustation menu and loved the choice of wines. Faultless food and service and wonderful breakfast the next day.
After staying at this boutique hotel twice, are looking forward to revisiting maybe next year. The views from our room were breathtaking and it was a joy to sit out on the balcony and drink in the atmosphere. The fine dining was excellent and we enjoyed the quietness and serenity of the area. Loved also visiting Halls Gap. Can’t wait to come back. Worth five stars.
My husband and I had not had a holiday together for as long as we could remember. We were given a gift of a 3 day stay at the Royal Mail. We arrived not knowing what to expect – and truth be known, not really expecting much, but we totally blown away by how lovely the hotel looked. We were warmly welcomed, directed to our room, and immediately fell in love with the place – it was so cosy and classy, all in one. Breakfast was ‘to die for’ – especially the lamb’s milk yoghurt combinations, and the lunch and dinner menus offered at the bistro and restaurant were not only served promptly and with style, but were some of the best meals we have tasted. The scene from our window was breathtaking. The relaxing atmosphere was exactly what we needed to unwind. We will be back very soon. Never before have we been so impressed with a place.
A beautiful destination and a beautiful meal. Service was wonderful, wines matched perfectly!
Great accommodation in one of the cottages on the sheep station, picked up to be taken to the restaurant and dropped home at the end of the night by one of the friendly staff.
You cannot ask for more than that!
Fantastic!
The Royal Mail is truly a sublime dining experience from the time you arrive. The staff are professional, welcoming and attentive and nothing is left to chance. The menu is exquisite, the wine list in a league of its own … the only one problem is choosing what to have. The standard and quality of the food is on a part with the best restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney. They use the freshest of ingredients and the beautiful aspect of this is that much of it is sourced locally … and even grown in the garden outside. The meals I have had have been a taste sensation. For a truly memorable dining experience do yourself a favour and book a table now!!!!
Excellent food and wine with sensational views.
My husband & I stayed here 2 years ago for a wonderful weekend and still recommend it to this day to everyone. For the wonderful room and friendly service, the incredible meal from Dan Hunter and his staff, the majestic surroundings and the walks and drives around one of Victoria’s best areas.
We dined in a group of 16. Despite the numbers the kitchen served an exceptional de-gustation meal – truly Melbourne quality in a regional area. The wines were delightful but perhaps a bit pricey. The serving staff were attentive and charming. The accommodation was not of the same quality and starting to appear dated. I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to reserve a king sized bed, and was told instead that it was luck of the draw upon check in.
The Royal Mail Hotel is a great place to visit, dine or stay.
a fantastic place to stay! relaxing and with everthing you need ~ Great food, amazing wine, beautiful setting & good service … what more could you ask for! I will be back!
Last year my husband and I were living apart due to job choices and we used th Royal Mail Hotel as a meeting point. It provided a great venue for a relaxing weekend with good food and wine provided in an exceptional atmosphere. Not only was dinner an excellent experience but the presence of the Grampians and surrounding areas created an experience as well.
Well done.
Maureen
A most comprehensive wine list, cool wait staff and a kitchen crew more than happy to engage and share food secrets with our table of 6 together with first class F&B topped off a memorable occasion for ua all
Just the best
My Fiancee and I had such a wonderful experience at The Royal Mail- that we are considering having our wedding there!!!
The service, food, views and accomadation were all top quality.
It deserves all the accolates it gets..
all the best
Luisa
Excellent there should be more hotels of the same calibre in regional areas.
The staff, from the front desk to the dining room and pub were friendly and helpful, which adds to the enjoyment of being on holiday. The rooms were very comfortable, with the most superb views. The restaurant was a gastronomic delight. We left feeling very relaxed and extremely well fed.
This destination has something for everyone. My husband is a keen gardener – but only of Australian species, so when we pulled in the native gardens surrounding all buildings was given an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’. Our accomodation was all you could wish for – a modern approach without the coldness that some sleek abodes can exude. We enjoyed the view, bith of the Grampians, and of the birds and wallabies outside our room.
Dinner was amazing. the wait staff apporachable and attentive, degustation menu ensuring that we tried combinations which otherwise we would of shied away from – and leaving us in no doubt that the chef and his team are one of the finest in Australia as each course was innovative and complemented the previous. The wine list was overwhelming, but by relying on the advice given and matching wines to courses, we were able to experience a range of local and overseas labels. This was an oustanding weekend break.
The setting is beautiful and the restaurant spectacular. Jeremy, the sommelier, is a gem. We will definitely return.
The Royal Mail has something that most other restaurants across Australia seriously lack [but they don't believe so] — it has luxurious ambience.
The Royal Mail Hotel is a delightfully friendly yet sophisticated holiday destination. It offers a wonderful combination of nautre walks, Australian bushland surrounds amidst modern and contemporary accommodation with delicious food, wine and impeccable service! Highly recommended++++
Stayed at the royal Mail for a wedding anniversary (2008) it was perfect. Food, wine & service excellent. Accommodation with view of the mountains very soothing & peaceful. Must go again very soon.
The rugged beauty of the bush, the elegance and comfort of the cottages and the breathtaking pleasures of the restaurant. I suspect there is an alchemist at work in Dunkeld!
brilliant food, service, wine, ambience, repeat visits required
A wonderful place to stay & dine. Relaxing environment, brethtaking views and excellent service. Can’t stay there often enough.
Food, Views and Service world class
What a magnificent establishment in such a breathtaking environment – great food and great personal attention.
A brilliant piece of luxury to break up a journey. Gastronomic heaven in the tasting menu, with informative and friendly waitress staff and the bonus of having your bed a few doors away.
A wonderful holiday destination. The complete package.
An exquisite dining experience set against the back drop of the Grampians,Excellent food & wine along with friendly and efficient service. You will want to return again & again.
A delightful place to stay – very comfortable, relaxing, great food and excellent service.
Was there in June 2008 for the beautiful degustation menu with the matching wines and to top it off we only had a to walk a few metres to stay at the Royal Mail Hotel rooms with the views of Mount Sturgeon.
Cannot wait to go back!
A truly delightful stay. Long walks on the property in beautiful countryside, well-appointed and comfortable accommodation and of course, food and wines of the highest standard, prepared by the team of chefs within the diners’ view, make for a special experience.
From the moment you arrive you know you are somewhere special. Surrounded by ancient and beautiful mountains you just know the Royal Mail is about to deliver warmth, comfort and unforgettable food and wine. We were not disappointed, a truly memorable meal and I still think about that 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon. As you leave you begin thinking about how you can organise to come again.
A beautiful boutique property in regional victoria that offers a memorable experience.
Pure relaxation, great food choices and many outdoor activities to be enjoyed at your own call.
The cottages at the royal mail have been my favourite getaway since moving to australia and the food is as good as anywhere in the country.
Sublime weekend!
Dawn views of mists over the mount. Wildlife & vegetation in abundance. Accommodation & facilities accessible & comfortable. Dining area layout & atmosphere welcoming & allows enough space to feel at ease & allow for privacy. The dining & wine was finely choreographed & dialogue with the waitpersons added to the dynamic of an exquisitley designed & delivered food appreciation experience. Seasonal influence on the menu was evident and quality of even the simplest items emphatic. The wine recommendations most complimentary.
My husband has some some severe difficulties due to Parkinson’s disease, but the ease of access to the facilities, information on the walks & the help and positive attitude of the Royal Mail staff never made us feel that we were being “accomodated”. The first weekend in May 2009 was a vary precious one for us, It was a late “Honeymoon” weekend & one that we look forward to repeating. Soon!
wonderful food using the freshest and best of local produce and a fantastic location, on the edge of The Grampians (gariwerd) a truly ancient and beautiful land.
the Royal Mail has class and style
the food and wine will make you smile
a walk in the garden or along the trail
will remain as memories without fail
the staff’s attention will ensure
a pleasant visit, that’s for sure
Attention to detail, walks to work up an appetite, a slice of Australia Felix history, fine food and wine, big skies and a peaceful bush ambience..pretty hard to beat.
Spectacularly good! Spent a great weekend there recently–great walks and views, great accommodation and the spectacular food. Will be back as soon as possible.
Quite simply the best dining experience I have ever had. Superb at every level.
The Royal Mail is well worth the drive, perfect food, wine, nice clean and modern rooms, fabulous weekender for those wishing to sample the grampians!
My husband an i enjoyed a memorable weekend at the Royal Mail Hotel in June 2009. The beautiful views, the nature, the freshness of the air were all amazing. And the food…well what can I say, absolutely superb.
Our group of 8 were fortunate to have a night their recently, and can surely say that the Royal Mail is not to be missed, outstanding for its innovative dishes, excellent accommodation, beautiful gardens, and its picturesque walking tracks. A great experience that you should fullfill in your lifetime.
Apart from the beautiful views, spacious bedrooms with excellent sheets, the food at the Royal Mail Hotel was superb. In the dining room the 10 or so courses were each prepared with great delicacy allowing full pleasure of the senses; aroma, taste and texture. The wine from Australia, particularly a Great Western Chardonnay were extremely good, and the International wines were very good as well. All the wines complimented the food. We ate in the Bistro one night and the food there was terrific, great taste. We also ate in the bar on the first night of our stay coming late and preferring a brief meal. The corned beef was the best I have tasted. Altogether delightful!
ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
We were astonished to encounter an hostelry with such high quality accommodation and restaurant in that part of the world.
Lovely place to stay. The native gardens are an inspiration as to how we should be gardening in the present climatic conditions.
The food at the Royal Mail Dunkeld was exceptional. We could not fault the food, the service nor the room. Even the shower of rain on the Saturday afternoon while we were walking didn’t dampen our mood. We were so looking forward to the dinner and it did not disappoint us. We have recommended this on numerous occasions and will continue to do so. We are looking forward to hopefully returning again in the near future.
I have enjoyed 5 stay at this wonderful place, the food beyond great, even a simple mixed grill at the bar is dining sensation. the view breath taking, service first class. If you drive past this motel/hotel and do not stop in you need your head read. I will be back
Celebrated Valentine’s Day this year with the most amazing meal ever at The Royal Mail…it was like eating a work of art! The staff were professional and gracious. We spend the night in the beautiful blue stone cottage and were chauffeured to dinner and back, which was a treat! Can wait for next time…
My partner and I celebrated our 20th anniversary by indulging in one of the best degustation meals ever at the Royal Mail and by spending two nights in one their glorious rooms at the foot of Mt Sturgeon. The Royal Mail is a true oasis in the middle of the mystical Grampians and a place we will go back to over and over again.
A tranquil setting and beautiful place with serene mountain views, a roaring open fire and delicious food and wine from each of the three dining scenes… it does not get much better!
Forget Provence. This is Australia at its best.
My husband and I stayed at the Royal Mail and dined there courtesy of a group of friends who gave us the experience for my 50th. I couldn’t have asked for a better present. The food and service was incredible and so was the accommodation. If you get the chance. go there!
Great food, beautiful scenery, a worthwhile trip.
Simply superb
The Royal Mail Hotel has rooms that are elegant and understated with amazing views of the Southern Grampian ranges. The food is just superb; inventive, beautifully presented and a veritable cornucopia of wonderful tastes. The Royal Mail has a very good wine list, featuring many regional selections, with excellent matching of wines by the glass to menu choices.
The discrete, yet attentive wait staff complete a wonderful accommodation and dining experience.
Great accommodation, the food and service was consistently world beating over the 3 days and it was a wonderful experience for the kids too
The Royal Mail cradles you in comfort and ease feeds you with totally new gastronomic treats. You are situated in the heart of Dunkeld, a beautiful and historic town which is an environment in the process of rebirth. If you need anything more you are on the doormat of the Grampians.
Recently with my husband and 2 friends I spent 3 nights at the Royal Mail Hotel enjoying a special offer of 3 nights for the price of 2. The rooms were very large, bed comfortable, huge bathroom. We chose to stay at the Royal Mail Hotel to experience the Degustation Menu which we had read about in a Melbourne newspaper. The dining experience was amazing, food delicious, service outstanding etc etc. We enjoyed discovering the delights of the surrounding area and intend returning .
The Royal Mail always delivers
I love that much of their amazing food comes straight from the kitchen garden. Beautiful!
My wife and I stayed in Cottage 1 while attending the Halls Gap Jazz Festival. Loved the setting and the design, the food hamper and whole feel. The restaurant even stayed open a little longer so that I get back for dinner after playing at the festival. Accommodation, service, food and ambience all absolutely A grade.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Royal Mail this year as it is one of our favourite places for a weekend away. We have stayed there about six times now. Why do we keep going back? We enjoy the fabulous food, peaceful location, captivating view towards Mount Sturgeon, comfortable accommodation, the proximity to Hamilton and the Grampians and the wonderful secondhand bookshop across the road.
Perfect weekend getaway spot.
Lovely food, lovely service!
Highly recommended!
Great get away.Excellent accommodation and wonderful food
We stayed at the Royal Mail Hotel recently on our way through the Grampians. It was actually recommended by one of their competitor’s when they were full!
It was a beautiful setting nestled below the hills. The rooms were lovely and the restaurant fine dining menu was definitely the highlight for us!
This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the rugged surrounds of the Grampians National Park, which beckons you to explore as it stand powering above you from your balcony. The Roal Mail is the welcoming oasis at the end of the day, being only minutes from your days adventure, an airconditioned retreat from the intense country heat, and when it comes to a place to dine the degustation is a journey worth taking in itself.
The Royal Mail Hotel at Dunkeld is a lovely, friendly place to stay and a glorious place to eat dinner. The precision of the kitchen and the skill of the wait staff are both astonishing. Course after course is delivered at what seem like the right intervals, even when people at the same table have different degustation menus. The wine service is similarly perfectly timed. All staff are welcoming while being thoroughly professional — a stunning achievement.
The other great pleasure is the peace and quiet of the grounds, allowing only the calls of the birds and the wind to be heard. This joy is enhanced on a walk around the arboretum — when working up an appetite for dinner !
a little peace of heaven in country vic and a little bit of heaven on a plate.
Heavenly food, wine and service set against the magnificent backdrop of the Grampians. Can’t wait to revisit for the 3rd time!!!!
We stayed with visitors from England, we couldn’t have chosen a better place. The view from our room was beautiful and they even experienced the Australian wildlife.
Our stay in the summer of 2008 in the shearer’s blue stones cottages was a welcome relief from our hectic work lives, we were well looked after by the staff and even were picked up for dinner at the hotel and returned later on. We had stunning views of the Grampians, with marvellous sunsets every night. Staying at the Royal Mail was a fabulous experience.
The most fabulous food cooked by Dan Hunter in the restaurant. A superb wine list. Knowledgable and attentive staff. A refreshing sleep in lovely accommodation and breathtaking views of Mt. Sturgeon and Mt. Abrupt before breakfast. And for the energetic, a climb to the top of either mountain for sweeping views of the countryside. A great weekend!
We had a beautiful dining experience. Delicious food matched with great wine. Nice place to stay.
A beautiful retreat into nature which is reflected in the food.
For two chefs from melbourne you couldn’t dream up a more perfect getaway. The food was so utterly surprising while remaining grounded and soulful and you could still smell the earth on the leaves that were straight from the kitchen garden. The beautiful waiter that looked after us all night later removed his apron, grabbed the keys and drove us pack to our secluded cottage where we had our own private mountain in the backyard! Like another world……
Stayed there several times. Splendid location and view . Very good accommadation for browsing, sluicing, resting and exploring.
Stayed twice – accommodation excellent – great atmosphere for a reunion – staff very attentive and meals excellent – especially breakfast!
Not only is the food magnificent – it is ideally located near some of Australia’s best bush walks. A wonderful place to stay; a great Australian location to relax and enjoy our wonderful countryside.
We organised a group of friends to spend the weekend at the Homestead, with a meal at the Royal Mail Hotel. What a wonderful experience for everyone. With the amazing backdrop of Mt Sturgeon at our doorstep, it was both peaceful and beautiful. We cannot speak highly enough of the food on offer at the hotel. Truly an experience to behold. Will definately be back and would recommend to everyone.
Stayed and dined for my birthday. Food was divine. What a wonderful experience! Staff were friendly and cabin situated at foot of Mount Sturgeon was perfect. Went for a bushwalk the next day before heading off. Plan to do it again next year.
Simply outstanding. Fab walks, brilliant wine list, divine food – even for very selective children. Accommodation was fantasitc for the family and all of the staff were happy to go ‘just that bit further’ to ensure we had a brilliant and memorable holiday. One of those places that you would return to.
WOW !!! What an experience. Fantastic food, fantastic accommodation, fantastic service and a fantastic part of the World. Will definitely be back again.
The Royal Mail is all about food. The hotel’s facade is striking, there are some lovely walks, and it’s a base for the southern Grampians, but people coming here are are in it for the restaurant. And rightly so. This is undoubtedly one of Victoria’s leading restaurants, and in my own view a much more exciting culinary destination than Melbourne’s leading eateries. Chef Dan Hunter brings refreshing innovation to his dishes, with creative use of varied ingredients and techniques, plus a satisfying emphasis on seasonality and local produce. There’s a bit of molecular gastronomy in there, but unlike the theatrical style of Vue de Monde, this is a complement to the ingredients rather than the main event. The bistro is great for other nights, serving satisfying, well-executed and really well-priced gastropub fare which mixes up modernised Brit and Spanish classics, most of which are also available in the pub as the third eating option. I wish this were my local. It’s well known for it’s wine list as well. As for the hotel itself, beautiful mountain views, and all the usuals you expect, in a fairly familiar modern style, which is fully satisfactory and comfortable without being particularly notable. I’ve not stayed at the bluestone cottages, which sound lovely, but I would warn anyone away from thinking they might be walking distance from the restaurant. Dunkeld is a pleasant but very small town with not much else in it – Halls Gap is the real base for the Grampians – so the pub/bistro/restaurant are really the only places to go in the evening unless you plan on a long car journey. Overall, if you are into food and drink, the special journey is worth it, but otherwise it is a very pleasant (although rather remote) base for the Grampians with the best pub grub you’ll have eaten in a long time.
Great food and wine and a wonderful setting. Great for dinner or a weekend away
The Royal Mail Hotel, Victoria looked like an old movie theatre from the early 1980’s a large curved round frontage of glass windows and surround by blossoming wattle. We ate lunch in the bistro watching the rain, with a bottle of fantastic burgundy. The lamb I ate was so soft and wonderfully tasty, the egg croquette style with wild mushrooms was as tasty as it was delicate. For dinner we were so lucky to enjoy the tasting menu of the most outstanding artistic food. Green lip abalone in marine essence, spring vegetables, shoots, and flowers literally from their market gardens, a tuna broth with flowers and radish floating on the surface and many more, all matched to wines. The maître de in times of need would run past our window across the road and behind the rare bookstore like a new mystery character being introduced to the film, to the cellar to collect a wine selected by a customer.
Staying at the Royal Mail Hotel was an entirely outstanding experience from its comfy rooms to fantastic food in a location that is as secret feeling as a lost land. As we left the following morning a dozen or so 356 Porsches were all lined up outside the hotel ready to move on to a new location for the day like little lady beetles assembling for a new flight.
Great food & a wonderful wine list.
Combinations of particular food with matching wine’s incrediably well done.
Maybe one day Australia’s very own “El Bulli”.
Dan Hunter’s food is reason enough to meake the trip. Add to that fantastic wine, and beautiful views and its the perfect weekend away. A visit to the kitchen garden is a must.
A destination to savour. The food, wine and service made for an event to remember.
To walk it all off next day with a climb up Mt.Sturgeon was the icing on the cake. Can’t wait
to repeat the experience
Fabulous food and wine matching at the restaurant. Excellent staff. Beautiful stay in the homestead. When there was a problem with a double booking the Royal Mail very graciously offered us one nights free stay which made the weekend even better.
Dunkeld is a feast of the senses – the tastes are delicious, the sounds of the bush a pleasure ; the sights of presentation and surroundings a delight; and the right touch in hospitality. We love it.

Anyone wanting a short break must stay at the Royal Mail. The food and wine on offer is superb, the accommodation amazing and the views are unsurpassed.
Lovely spot for a kid-free escape. great food, wine and surrounds and not too far from home.
A beautiful view of the mountains from the room, the sound of birds coming in through the balcony doors, the eucalypts moving with the breeze. A great location which offers a base for walking in the Southern Grampians and exploring the landscape. And with the pleasure of returning to a sumptuous meal in the dining room at night.
Wonderful wine list, great food, great accommodation and great hiking!
An amazing place to indulge all the sense!
A wonderful place to stop on my regular trips to and from Hamilton. At any time of day – lunch, breakfast, a snack or just a coffee – always first class and superb ambience and outlook.
This would have to be one of the great dining experiences – a setting that is absolutely unique and inspiring, a restaurant with exceptional food matched to elegant wines from the region and first class accomodation that is only a stumble away after an evening of indulgence.
Stayed at the Royal Mail for a friends wedding, and thought the accommodation was fantastic. The whole area is beautiful, and the staff are great.
I luckily got to spend my birthday here this year and by far it was the best I’ve ever had. The mid week gourmand package superceded my expectations. On so many occasions when champagne is offered as part of a package it is non drinkable this was not only drinkable but divine. The rooms had stunning australian terrain views and were surrounded my scents and sounds of the australian bush – such serenity. The degustation menu offered honestly the most flavoursome, real and aesthetically beautiful gastronomic creations I have encountered. The wines which were matched were perfect and I have since enjoyed many bottles from various local vineyards I would never have heard of. Thank you for sharing such innovation and service giving us an otherwise unchartered experience.
A great place to get away from the city-life, but also to experience world class dining, wonderful accommodations and facilities and an exceptionally friendly staff.
A wonderful unique Australian food, wine and accommodation experience.
Always a memorable visit.
The atmosphere of the Royal Mail Hotel is calming, peaceful and carries one back to the good old days when nothing was too much trouble.
Qute simply a wonderful place to be. First class service coupled with excellent food and superb surroundings…. Great memories of a superb stay…. we’ll be back again …
Used to have a few beers in the old,old pub at met my wife ain Stawell at the other end of the Grampians. The Royal Mail now provides a wonderful base to revisit all the old camp sites and fishing places with the comforts of life needed as age creeps upon us. As an ex chef and large caterer in Melbourne I appreciate the food, wine and service and the difficulties in operating ouside major centre. Hats off as well to the chefs who painstakingly peel those minute vegetables what patience! The accommodation is all that we need the food and wine international class and what about the gardens that set off this gem, they are special ideed.
Great food, lovely atmosphere, very good accommodation – a great trio
The Royal Mail Hotel is what a good hotel ought to be – ideally situated after a pleasant drive in delightful surrounds it provides seamless service commencing with a warm welcome that includes excellent resources about the local area and activities, a hearty breakfast to see in the day’s walking through the breathtaking southern Grampians, a comprehensive drinks list to complement the unique and delicious menus, and a large, comfortable bed to end the day while the canopy of stars twinkle above. A gorgeous experience.
My stay at the Royal Mail Dunkeld earlier this year in March for my brother’s wedding was fantastic. Wow what a amazing view of the Grampions and the dinning experiance was excellent.
The Royal Mail Hotel is such a lovely destination with its glorious views and absolutely mouth watering cuisine. A most extensive wine list and using only the freshest and finest ingredients found locally, The Royal Mail Hotel would be one of my best dining experiences.
We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Mail Hotel. The food was out of this world, an experience not to be missed.
THE ROYAL MAIL , Dunkeld is a soul place for me. From the Mountain View rooms the majestic Mt Sturgeon towers above the valley, sometimes shrouded in mist,or the backdrop for flights of birds. The grounds are a delight and now the brochure available from the hotel encourages one to walk and explore;the mountain itself for the hardy , the beautiful grounds themselves or the tranquil arboretum nearby by at leisure.
However THE ROYAL MAIL is not only noted for the spirit of place,it is a superb destination for FOOD. From the glories of the restaurant to the more casual bistro and bar food;to eat in the hotel is a wonderful experience. Breakfast too is tasty and delicious.
THE ROYAL MAIL is a destination in itself. When you have finished exploring and eating you can retire to the beautifully appointed rooms to rest and enjoy the room with a view.
great views from our room- beautiful with the arvo sun filtering thru the trees. lovely birdlife right in front of our room deck. awesome gardens with colourful sturt peas in flower. fantastic food. loved walking with the emu, kangaroos and sheep along the river path thru the great river gums. great day trip up victoria valley and across to halls gap and back.
would love to come back again for another visit. our stay was way too short.

Wonderful accomodation in tranquility. Divine food and service that made us and our young children feel very welcome.
Warm, relaxing, first class accommodation and meals, great wine list, great staff, great location.
The Royal Mail Hotel offers the best food I have tasted in Australia, and as an added bonus you get to stay in a great motel room so no one has to drive
Enjoyed every aspect of our stay! The food and presentation an equal to the scenery.
I took an unexpected break in my trip. I arrived tired and exhausted. The beautiful surroundings (inside & outside) were food for the soul. The peace and tranquility seeped in and I left refreshed with equilibrium restored. I only have to think of the beautiful mountain view from my window and that feeling is right back with me.
Oh and did I mention the food? Sensational!
My experience was far more than accommodation and far, far more than I expected.
The Royal Mail has it all for destination dining. Apart from the views, great walks, great accommodation choices, it lures discerning palates with its amazing wine cellar and surely the best regional dining experience to be had.
At the begining of the day AND at the end of the day, this location in the Southern Grampians says it all! The motel facilities are great but the shearers cottages only 3km away are even more secluded and closer to nature. You may discuss the food for a very long time, but take a few days break….not just a weekend… and walk or drive in any direction from the Royal Mail Hotel as your base to enjoy even more of fabulous Western Victoria too! Dunkeld is a great place to be.
Peaceful, comfortable and delicious – what a treat!
My entire extended family stayed at the RM and all thought the atmosphere, setting and service was very memorable.
Very clean, modern and private with gorgeous gardens & views plus quality extras like lovely coffee in the room and nice toiletries etc. We had a lovely time and would recommend the Royal Mail to everyone. Food & wine was fabulous also!
A wonderful gastronomic experience in a stunning setting – a terrific place to escape to.
Delicious food, delightful company (I BYO’d), beautiful views, animals, gardens and located in the ‘champion Grampians’. Glorious!
You’re treated like a Royal at the Royal Mail!
My husband and I are fairly constant travellers, away in Europe and the States for at least 2 months every year, and were blown away by the magnificent degustation dinner and wonderful accommodation at the Royal Mail on the friday after the Warnambool Cup.We will be bringing our many travelling friends to enjoy such a unique Aussie experience.
A sensational place to stay. Has reached a much higher level than most in Australia. Closest to the best lodges we have stayed at in NZ. Highly recommend to all.
Still had to look this word up in the dictionary for the spelling, but the degustation menu is an experience not to be forgotten! Good luck Royal Mail Hotel.
When you find a restaurant where the chefs gather the produce from their own garden, you know you are eating local, freshest quality and with the seasons.
Great accommodation which combines high standards with a relaxed and comfortable ambiance.
What a great place – great room, great view, friendly and professional staff, excellent restaurant! Can’t wait to go back.
The Royal Mail provided a tasteful, peaceful environment both in the accommodation and the dining area where luscious food wasenjoyed after an invigorating walk to the local scenic areas and places of interest. The whole little village has really got its act together so that visitors can enjoy the whole week-end.
We did not know what to expect after booking for one night. Our stay was a very pleasant experience. The room, amenities, staff, food and refreshments were all of a top standard. The hotel was very comfortable and we have many friends who have indicated they will either join us again or visit on their own.
What a beautiful backdrop -the amazing colours of the grampians mixed with a great pub atmosphere and true fine dining!
Romance and comfort, stunning views, wonderful service. And the food – a fantastic experience, a flawless menu of local, seasonal produce matched to exquisite wines. The perfect getaway.
I have stayed at the hotel on a number of occasions. Once for a local wedding and the other times for work conferences. it has exceeded my expectations on all occasions! Thanks for great experience guys!
The Royal Mail is a foodies dream and a travellers oasis.
An amazing place to relax, unwind, bushwalk and dine. I have had the best meal of my life at the Royal Mail – no doubt. The degustation with matched wines is a complete experience with some of the most amazing flavours and textures you will ever experience. We intend to make the Royal Mail a must-go destination every year.
Beautiful property with exquisite food!! I haven’t visited the Grampians for sometime and now I will be visiting a lot more often with this kind of accommodation and dining
great modern comfortable accommodation in a fantastic environment completes a wonderful and unique food and wine experience.
great modern comfortable accommodation in a fantastic environment completes a wonderful and unique food and wine experience.
Hmmmmm – the power of good food and wine, in that it can put people, reputations, buildings, communities and townships on the map – Royal Mail & Crew are an excellent example of this…… – well done and look forward to the next visit.
Amazing Chef. Beautiful vistas. Well worth the trip!
We have stayed three times at the Royal Mail & we have enjoyed our stay each time. Not only are the three dining options of a high standard but the rooms are modern & comfortable as well. We always wander through the well cared for native gardens at the hotel to see what is in bloom & we walk along the many pathways on the property.
And the Grampians are a short drive away if you want a more strenuous hike.
A couple of hours drive from Melbourne & you can escape to a delightful break at the Royal Mail.
It’s one of our favourite places to stay.
some of the best food and wine in Victoria – with a veiw to match
We try to go to the Royal Mail at least once a year for a few days. The accommodation is excellent with marvellous views over the Grampians, there are easy and more difficult walks all around and the service at the hotel is great. But then there is the restaurant with magnificent food and a wine list that must be the best in country Victoria. We usually find a marvellous claret at a reasonable price. Dining at the Royal Mail is an experience not to be missed, And if you are there for more than one night, the Bistro provides excellent food.
I commend the Royal Mail for its sccommodation, food and wine.
The Royal Mail Hotel was the highlight of our honeymoon! The view from our room was spectacular and we loved the walking tracks that started a few steps from our door. The location was peaceful and romantic and the dinner was everything we’d dreamed it would be…..and more! The Royal Mail turned our special occasion into something truly magical, and we’ll never forget it.
Wonderful dining experience, well informed and polite staff, comfortable rooms in a delightful rural setting.
We had the most wonderful weekend in July staying at the Royal Mail Hotel.
The rooms have beautiful views and everything we wanted. The meal at the restaurant was absolutely superb, words cannot express how amazing it was, I will remember it for a long time.
Have had 2 stays, both fabulous. Food & wine excellent, lovely town and great Grampians scenery. Friendly and efficient staff make for a great time. A very handy location to us (living in Ballarat) for a short stay.
I have been a regular visitor at the Royal Mail for ten years or more, and never once disappointed. You just know, every time you go there, that you are going to have a good time. The reliability factor is important, along with all the other fine attributes, mentioned by others.
Extraordinarily good wine list, matched by innovative food of the highest quality and imagination, and wonderful Australian bush location – a unique destination in this country, not to be missed by food and wine lovers.
One of the better stopovers we have had in Australia. Comfortable clean rooms, friendly staff and fabulous food experience. The sommellier was especially geneours and knowledgable. A great location to tour the Grampians and the Great Western Wine region.
Recommended by friends we stayed at The Royal Mail. Perfect location, stunning views, first class accommodation (even a kangaroo at the door of the motel). Delicious 10 course meal. Great staff and service.
We had heard that it was good, and it sure exceeded our expectations.
Great menu with attentive service. Accomodation was first class. A walk in the grounds is recommended to everybody.
It was all wonderful – the food, the wines and the view. We thoughouly enjoyed our two night stay with lots of beautiful food and wine and really enjoyed walking it off up the hill!
We will book again and again and again and will tell all and sundry how wonderful the food is and what a fabolous place to stay rest and recover – congratulations and a great destination
We loved the whole Royal Mail experience. Very comfortable room with a fantastic view, absolutely superb food and wine and friendly, knowledgeable helpful staff.
We also loved the outdoor experience of Dunkeld and the surrounding area.
My husband and I stayed in one of the Mt Sturgeon cottages with greatmountain views – which we ended up climbing. Also climbed Mt Abrupt which is nearby. The cottage was blissfully peaceful and had a great firepalce. The complementary breakfast hamper was fantastic and the food at the Royal Mail was superb. Will defintely go back again – it is the perfect location for time out!
My husband and I had to the best weekend at the Dunkeld Hotel – the food, the wine, the room and especially the staff made it a weekend to remember. In the words of the great Arnie…. “we will be back…!”
Fantastic food and stunning wine list where the 96 Palliser chardonnay is to die for- price even reduced on 2nd visit as judged ‘slightly past its best’. We drank 2 bottles to check! Degustation menu satisfies the greediest and rooms dreamily comfortable with post prandial and pre breakfast walks nearby. Main challenge is working out which way to drive there and back. Will make it an annual pilgrimage.
The food, accomodation, service and location are all splendid (and the hotel walking tracks are an excellent additional feature)
Had international guests when i stayed at the Royal Mail. The rooms where great, restuarant was sensational, bar was fantastic and the location/ scenery was fabulous. Our guests all commented that it was a highlight of the trip.
The restaurant degustation with matched wines presented us with inspired food and wines we had never seen . A wonderful experience and a short walk to a comfy bed.
Little surpasses the real joy at staying with you. The culinary experience provided by the Chef & his wonderful “tapa-style” degustation followed by our return to our delightful little cabin facing the mountain sitting by a lovely fire enjoying a local red wine.
We are coming agin & most likely again!
Thankyou!
Excellent accommodation -sublime food. An experience not to be missed.
The Mt Sturgeon Cottages were a great place to stay. Coming in to the Hotel for the tasting menu and selected wines was a treat never to be forgotten. We will be back.
What a great location and a range of terrific modern and heritage accom. Plus we loved the restaurant. We’ll be back!
Have had two wonderful stays at this wonderful Boutique Hotel. Wonderful balcony to sit out on from our room and just sip a glass of wine and enjoy the stunning views of the Grampians. The fine dining is remarkable and worth another trip for. Hope to visit again sometime next year.
For a super romantic private sojourn choose a bluestone shearer’s cottage, where you can snuggle in front of a cosy fire or sip cocktails overlooking fantastic Mt. sturgeon
Best food & wine, great views, good rates, lots of day trips to do in the area, especially the wildflower re-growth since the fires.
We had a great stay at The Royal Mail Hotel. The accommodation was excellent, he food was fantastic and there was a wonderful wine selection.
Excellent, innovative menu, fine attention to detail, a warm welcome and friendly personalised service. The cooked breakfast was also a revelation. I will be coming again!
The food is a revelation, not just because of the range of textures, colours and flavours, but because at the end of a multi-course meal over several hours you feel great, not overstuffedat all.
Tasting menu and accompanying wines were superb. Looking forward to our next visit. Congratulations.
Fabulous place to spend our 40th wedding anniversary.Has the lot-visit the Grampians, places like Port Fairy etc. and then return for the best food and service imaginable. We’ll be back!
Great destination. Fantastic dining experience with faboulus views of the southern Grampians – highly recommended.
Just Superb!
3 words – location, cuisine, service.
Great place. Friendly management
My husband and I visited the Grampians for an escape away from the city and I came across the Royal Mail Hotel in my searching and I instantly fell in love with the pictures on the website. From the moment that I called the hotel, my impression was set. The staff were helpful and informative, booked us into a beautiful room and also made sure that we had a table at the resturant for dinner while we were there.
The resturant was amazing – great service and truly spectacular food. The chef is to be commended!
The rooms were simple and clean with breathtaking views across the mountains. It made for a great escape from the city!
Fantastic destination for a weekend away. Food superb and accomodation stunning – we stayed in one of the Mt Sturgeon cottages. Will definitely be back!
Fabulous views and surrundings, exceptional food and service. A great country pub offering all from the Friday night raffle to 5 star dining.
I had never before had a food and wine experience like this.
Outstanding.
Consistently high standard; great wine list.
We’ve been coming back to the Royal Mail for years and we’re nevere disappointed.
Beautiful cottages, stunning views, fantastic service and amazing food… What more can I say?
We had a wonderful experience at the Royal Mail in Feb 2009. A birthday celebration with the most magnificent food and wine, the service was exceptional, the food had every taste imaginable.
We could not have chosen a better place to dine. The service in the restaurant and those that looked after our accomodation was just 100%+ – we will certainly be returning to the Royal Mail Hotel for future meals and accomodation.
I held a conference at the Royal Mail and was blown away by the gorgeous scenery and brilliant service. I will definitely return.
A weekend at the Royal Mail was a wedding present to us from some special friends. It was as special as our friends are to us! Thanks for the memories.
Cheers, Sandra & Gary Sammut
My husband & i were lucky enough to have the 10 course degustation menu w/ matching wines( of course) now my hubby is a 3 vege & meat man & was absolutely stunned as the food was presented to our table pure genious.
Hats off to Dan & his great Staff in the kitchen.
Spent an amazing weekend at the Royal Mail this year..Cant wait to go back. Beautiful setting and the best service. Would highly recommend going there to anyone!
We recently had our wedding at the Royal Mail – we used all the facilities both in town and at the Homestead – the staff, food, experience etc were exceptional. Many of our guests have already returned for a weekend getaway since being introduced to the Royal Mail.
The best food experience in the country. Faultless and exquisite. Every detail was perfect. A destination in it’s own right and deserving of the highest accolades. I will most certainly return. Pure heaven.
Dan Hunter is nothing short of an inspiration – his attitude to cooking and the pleasure he induces through his food is pure joy. Oh, and the hotel and location are stunning too.
Spent a lovely weekend at The Royal Mail for my birthday. Fabulous destination for foodies and nature lovers alike. (I went mostly for the food!!!)
Sublime, Relaxing, World Class & it’s in our own backyard……unbelievable!
A dining experience like no other. Exceptional!
Food and service match the perfect surroundings
Simply stunning place to unwind and the best food in Australia if not the planet!
Beautiful place to stay an unwind, fantastic. We tried the 10 course tasting meal with matching wines, plus a few extra wines in the bar…. Staff very helpful. The room we staying in had unreal stunning views. WE WILL BE ACK SOON
one of the best food and service i ever had !
Great Place. Amazing food.
We read of the Royal Mail in a travel magazine and decided on a weekend stay. It was terrific. The restaurant was as good as magazine suggested and the views to the Grampians from our room great. Will definitely be going back probably taking a few friends with us.
The views, the restaurant and the wine list are all as good as you can get anywhere in Australia – a great combination.
Who said there was no more gold in Victoria’s west? There is plenty to be found at the Royal Mail.
We stayed at Royal Mail Hotel again, The meals, service, was fantastic again.
To be able to have a local wine,an cheese platter an just watch the mountains, with the clouds, mist, fog.on a cool Winter day was beautiful…..
I have been driving past the Royal Mail for years on my way to visit family in Portland, and have finally had the perfect opportunity to book a night’s accommodation and degustation experience – my hubby’s and my first wedding anniversary. I am so excited, I can hardly wait!
Quite simply, this is an experience unmatched elsewhere.
Superb food, and a great way to visit the Grampians
WOW what an amazing getaway !!!! What more can I say
it is the top of our wish list. Hope to get there this next year.
Stunning concept – history revisted with a modern take as art deco meets rustic charm of our early forbears dwellings at the base of stunning Mt Sturgeon. Choice of stylish high class dining deco-style at the Royal Mail, relaxed bistro service or customised private dining in a historic homestead. Modern accomodation to showering in a water tank. Meld the differences with brilliant local dining, fantastic wine list as you relax and soak up the majesty of the Grampians. If you’re lucky, you too might sight the black panther of the Grampians through the walls of glass- friends did at their wedding there!
Great vista, beautiful food and so comfortable
The fine dining and extraordinary wine cellar offers a perfect finish to a day spent walking appreciating the beauty of the Grampians area. An outstanding place to stay.
This place took me back to the 1930s. I am a fan of all that is Art Deco and to stay here with it’s beautiful architecture and surreal surroundings was a dream come true!
Great meal & accommodation. I once lived in Stawell but wasn’t aware of the beauty of the Southern Grampians.
The Royal Mail Hotel certainly makes you feel like royalty. It serves up the most exquisite meals which are plated up fit for a King or a Queen. The decor is restrained and relaxing. The view are so beautiful you feel impelled to write an anthem to herald them with each glimpse. The chef’s garden is one of many wonderful secrets awaiting adventurous courtiers who stroll through the grounds. The hints of Art Deco take you back to an era of sheer luxury and easy living.
The ambiance of the place is peaceful and peacefull. A place where you can relax and feel comfortable, without the rush feeling or the need to want to exert yourself.
Far enough away from Melbourne to feel like a true holiday away from home but close enough to be a short holiday away from home.
We spent a night at the Royal Mail Hotel after nearly four weeks on the road. Our trip took us from Melbourne to Mildura, Arkaroola, William Creek, Oodnadata. Coober Pedy, Woomera, Clare, and Coonawarra. We decided our last night on the road before returning to Melbourne would be at a beautiful hotel with fantastic views of mountains and one of the most memorable meals available. We got all of this at the Royal Mail Hotel.
Dunkeld is an amazing place! I love how such fine dining is situated in a small country town. and the view is beautiful!
the hotel is beautiful in a stunning location with one of the most delicious and elegant dining experiences on offer in Victoria. All round a great place for a weekend away
A little known part of Victoria. I spent my school days in the area and have great memories, especially of the Grampions. What vision and entrepreneurship to create the wonderful country accommodation and dining experience that is “The Royal Mail Hotel” Dunkeld. The secret is, of course, to match the location, facilities and ambiance with management and staff who share the vision – well done to all.
.
Excellent accommodation, great food
The landscape and the Royal Mail dining room are abiding strong memories.
Just perfect as the picture, inviting and longing to come back again and again.
The room was supurb, the veiw exceptional, and the meal exsquisite.
beautiful old art deco building converted into a hotel in the grampians.
The views we had from our room WOULD NORMALLY BE ENOUGH TO VISIT THIS WONDERFUL LOCATION,THEN ADD THE GOURMET FEAST AND YOU HAVE THE LOT.
A delightful weekend destination. Take a walk, visit a winery, enjoy the view and eat fantastic food with exceelent wine.
A stunning area to spend some down time
I remember when this was “just” a country pub. I dont know how to dicribe it now! Incredible transformation, great food, the view is free. Dont forget the wonderful surrounds, Halls Gap, Hamilton, Portland, Port Fairy, you cant “do” this area in 1 day!
Having called in for a meal on a hurried trip to Horsham, we would have loved to stay and enjoy the hospitality and fine dining experience
Sensational food. Gorgeous views. Luxury accomodation. The perfect place to retreat from the world.
Brilliant food, great accommodation in a great situation
What a magnificent stay in absolutely breathtaking surroundings. I highly recommend the degustation menu and to take on the skilled words of RMH’s sommelier, your palate won’t be let down.
Absolutely lovely venue
Loved the view of the Grampians from private balcony while having pre-dinner drinks
We stayed at the Royal Mail for our honeymoon. The service was excellent, the staff friendly and location very beautiful. It was our first time away in regional Victoria but definitely not our last.
The combination of top notch food and the close proximity to the wonders of the Grampians that makes The Royal Mail a must stay hotel
The Royal Mail Dunkeld really delivers on its promise of spectacular food and accommodation in an equally spectacular setting. We are coming back to Mt Sturgeon homestead later this year to see the New Year in ,in style.
Great place to stay, beautiful food and very helpful staff.Magnificent scenery.Strongly recommend.
Unpretentious, superb accommodation providing the essentials in a comfortable stay. The restaurant offering gourmet dining that doesn’t break the bank…. and this situated in stunning rural Victoria….. what more could you ask for!
We have stayed at the Royal Mail…what a wonderful experience…a toal dining extravaganza with extraordinary service set in a comfortable if not iconic setting. What the Royal Mail has done to sleepy Dunkeld has to be seen to be believed…
I’ve stayed at the Royal Mail a number of times – and think it is one of the best spots anywhere – for great food, excellent service, comfortable accomodation and beautiful scenery. It’s a delight.
The Royal Mail is unbeatable for superb accommodation in a wonderful location, great views, attention to detail and quality seasonal food prepared with panache.
The garden view apartments are spacious and luxurious, the cafe offers a relaxed
and pleasing dining experience ,friendly staff ,great food and wine what more could
you ask for.
One of Victorias gems, accommodation, meals and views to die for.
My partner and I return to the Royal Mail each and every year and somehow it just keeps getting better. Wonderful staff, fantastic food, beautiful surrounds.
We stayed, lunched and dined on August 1st – great accommodation, all staff were very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, and the food and wine leave few superlatives remaining in any language. There will be return dates……
The Dunkeld Royal Mail Hotel provides a unique opportunity to experience fabulous dining options and excellent accommodation, set in a beautiful Australian landscape. The best of everything!
We chose the Royal Mail for our honeymoon last year and it was everything we hoped for; quiet, relaxed, great views and walking throughout the day followed by lovely food and wine in the evening. It was a fantastic place to unwind for a few days after the hectic weeks leading up to the wedding, and just what we needed. All the modern comforts with a truly rural outlook – thanks for the happy memories!
We have enjoyed both the degustation menu with wines and the bistro meals. It is always up to the standard of 2009 Best Regional Restaurant and is a fantastic place to visit with the views of Mt Sturgeon whilst dining. The Bar has a relaxed easy atmosphere for a lazy Sunday afternoon. All in all a great place to visit. It should be on everyones “to do” calendar each year.
Spent 3 days there in late May. One word – Excellent
All staff at The Royal Mail Hotel ensured our stay was amazing.
I will be recommending it to all our friends.
What an enjoyable experience.
I had lunch recently at the Royal Mail and it was just amazing. Can’t wait to go back.
The Royal Mail Hotel is one of the great regional hotels with outstanding service, fantastic accommodation and great food and wine.
My family and I have enjoyed many days and night experiencing the other wonderful ambience of what Dunkeld has to offer.
I often recommend the Hotel to friends for either a quick stay over or a long casual weekend.
Regards
Frank Dunell
Having to book a meeting room and lunch for our Xmas Break-up I looked to Dunkeld. What an awsesome place. Meeting room was unique the views amazing, hard to concentrate on the actual meeting. Lunch was out of this world and staff were great. What an enjoyable day. So nice we went again the following year.
This is the favourite on my wish list. As a foody I’ve read and heard so much about it, it just has to be a favourite place.
Beautiful food, excellent service, especially for me being a solo diner, shame to see Lok go. Nothing was too much trouble. Nice rooms, excellent views and the Grampians are a beautiful area to explore.
The Royal Mail Hotel is a beautiful, if possibly, underappreciated destination. I would highly recommend staying in the fantastic and well-designed accommodation, taking in the breath-taking surrounds of the Grampians, and enjoying the unique gastronomic experience of a meal in the awarded restaurant.
Fabulous accomodation! Fabulous surroundings! Fabulous people! And most importantly stunningly innovative and fabulous food!
Visiting Dunkeld and experiencing the amazing food and wonderful location has been a highlight of my year. We will return as often as we can
My wife and I recently and thoroughly enjoyed three superb and unique nights of dining at the Royal Mail. The food and wine was complemented by a young, dedicated and enthusiastic front of house and team of chefs which ably demonstrated kitchen histrionics is definitelyy not a necessary pre requisite to the delivery of a unique and special dining experience.
we came for dinner & stayed for lunch the next day as well – what a fantastic experience in such a beautiful part of australia.
Just simply the best!!!!!!
moving to melbourne shortly and one of the attractions is the excellent food and wine on offer in the Grampians especially The Royal Mail!
exquisitely delicious food, each course with it’s superbly matching wine, together with the beautiful vews of the southern Grampians and a great choice of accomodation. Thank you so much for the best gastronomic experience I’ve ever encountered Dan (Hunter).
Tranquillity and harmony with nature at its geological best in this superbly picturesque location at a venue catering for every need.
The Royal Mail is always such a delight! We stay there whenever we can, and it is now the ‘recommended stop over’ for our employees when working in the Barwon Region. We like it so much that we held a staff conference there! Naturally everything went beautifully – excellent service, accommodation, rooms … and the food. The garden is awesome – great for photos. The backdrop of Mt Sturgeon and Mt Abrupt is divine. All in all, a magic experience whenever we visit.
5 star on every level. fabulous food, wine, accommodation, gorgeous gardens and sensational friendly service
Fantastic place for a luxurious long weekend – the best in Australia. Wonderful rooms with beautiful views. Sensational walks for all from the adventurous and the ponderous. And then there’s the food. This bistro was great – but the degustation menu from the restaurant was sublime. The wines were well matched and generously served – a credit Lok who presided over this monumental task. We chose the vintage selection but next time will indulge in the international matching wines..
My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon at the Royal Mail Hotel 8 years ago in 2001. We have since returned over 20 times and have recently been able to share our favourite location with our 2 Chihuahua’s. Our favourite part of the Royal Mail Hotel are the Mt Sturgeon Cottages that are located approximately 3km away from the main part of the hotel and restaurant. Formally shearers’ cottages, these beautiful 19th century blue stone cottages have been restored to their natural charm with local hardwood floorboards, an open fire place with leather lounge area, colonial style kitchen, and a separate bedroom area. Attached to the cottage is also a walk-in water tank that has been converted into an ingenious bathroom. The stunning views of Mt Sturgeon and Mt Abrupt from your cottage are absolutely breathtaking. Wake up in the morning to the aroma of freshly plunged coffee and enjoy the local produce supplied in your complimentary breakfast basket. Relax outside and unwind to the peaceful country surroundings and majestic views of the Southern Grampians.
Sublime destination! Great accommodation with spectacular view of the mountains. The wine list is excellent as is the food, with notably the best ‘Crema Catalan’ in the world, could not rival with any I have had anywhere, even Barcelona. Loved it all.
A brilliant degustation menu – both vegetarian and omnivore. Can’t wait to come back again. Perhaps I should stop telling all my friends about it or else… All accolades are thoroughly deserved. Well done Dan and all the staff.
The shearers’ cottages are wonderfully rustic, and we loved being able to get up in the morning and enjoy our breakfast hamper outside with Mount Sturgeon as our ‘visual entertainment’. Dinner at the restaurant is an absolute must – you will be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation, so the tasting menu with matching wines can be happily savoured.
Spent a couple of nights as a detour on the way to Mildura. Excellent accommodation and food and a good base to explore the local area. Took a day around the Grampians them went down to Hamilton to have a brief loook at the area. found lots of good things to in the local area to explore.
What a beautiful place to stay an unwind, after our rush, rush, life in Melb.Food is to die for. A must have meal in the bar, is Dans MEAT PIE with peas an gravy, Yummy, Yummy. Beautiful set out Rooms, the Views, The service within the whole Royal Mail is flawless. We will be back.
There are not enough superlatives to describe the amazing all round experience that is the Royal Mail Hotel.
So few places get so many things so right, the beautiful location, great service, phenomenal wine list and one of the best meals I think i’ll ever eat!
My husband (born in US) and I, found our stay last April at The Royal Mail totally awesome. We stayed at one of the bluestone cottages and shared the dawn and dusk of each day with all the native bush residents .
The restaurant is world standard, with a remarkable degustation menu. Climbing Mt. Sturgeon is a unique experience, even for the “more mature” adventurers.
With tremendous views of Mount Abrupt and Mount Sturgeon from the accommodation rooms and the dining options from bar meals to a world class restaurant, The Royal Mail is a perfect weekend away in summer or winter. Highly recommend.
Excellent and generous accommodation in the wheelchair accessible cottage, including the garden and the mountain view. Dinner and breakfast both meals to remember.
The first true destination restaurant in Australia! On a quiet Main Street in country Victoria is a kitchen turning out possibly the most intelligent culinary creations, echoing the pure flavors of beautiful produce. Experience Chef Dan Hunter’s cuisine now before the whole world comes calling at which point you might have to book at least a year in advance….
Oh, the rooms and those day hikes in the beautiful Grampians are nice too.
Fantastic food with matched wines that complimented the food absolutely perfectly. Would recommend a weekend at the Royal Mail to anyone.
We stayed at the Royal Mail last night – and dined in the bar this time instead of the restaurant. Still fabulous food and wine, wonderful service, brilliant accommodation – a favourite spot for us!
Loved our stay, can’t wait to go back. Beautiful views, great walks and superb food. Take some time out to enjoy all it has to offer.
Our stay at the Royal Mail Dunkeld during August this year was “out of this world”
Our room was lovely, our meals including breakfast were delicious and so beautifully presented.Any overseas visitors that choose to stay at this hotel will be so impressed with both the hotel and the wonderful service provided by the very professional staff.Would we go back to the Royal Mail you bet we would.
Dining and Wining at the Royal Mail is one of life’s great experiences and the scenery is magnificent.
Wonderful place to say for a couple of days and just relax. We make the trip from Melbourne at least once a year if time permitted we would be there much more often.
We gave a gift voucher to the Royal Mail Hotel to our son as a Christmas present last year as we knew he would love the whole experience as much as we did .
With the Grampians as a backdrop The Royal mail offers everything the traveller looks for a great vista, splendid food and wine and magnificent service.
Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld epitomises everything that is great about the Grampians, and sets the standard for fabulous food, wine & accommodation. It’s the sort of place you could, and should, come back to every year; that’s my plan!
The ‘Garden Appartments’ were elegant, spacious and, even better, just across the road from the most splendid dining experience! Just catching glimpses from our table of the expertise and concentration of the kitchen staff as they went about their work was a fascinating experience. It was evident that the dishes were carefully thought through and executed with a real depth of experience. The setting and the pace of a place like Dunkeld is unique. The visitor centre can supply you with a real sense of the history of this little town on the railway line and its role in the development of the Grampians and the Western District. I anticipate going back there again soon.
Spectacular location ,wonderful dining and comfortable ,quiet rooms.
Absolutely gorgeous – great rooms; great food; great location; great service!
Having attended a wonderful wedding function at the Hotel along with accom and food and walks around Mt Sturgeon it was an all round great weekend and it makes you want to do it again and again. Lifes little luxuries.
Our stay at the Royal Mail was highlighted by the magnificent food. We tried all levels starting with the tasting menu in the restaurant, then the bistro then the bar and we were never disappointed! The scenery, the swimming pool and the service were also excellent.
We stayed at the garden view room and it was great. The service was excellent. We had a broken remote control and the staff fixed it immediately. We still got adequate attention eventhough there was a wedding party with a huge crowd.
Always a great place to stay and take in the terrific local food and ambience.
Great place to recharge the batteries.
Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff, food and accomodation. Definitely recommended.
Superb setting and comfort. Deluxe dining with brilliant haute cuisine and exemplary service.
This is a delightful regional surprise for the traveller who seeks only the best.
Perfect stop-over on the way from Melbourne to Adelaide. Excellent accommodation with fantastic views of the Grampians, and the lure of a country restaurant with food that would beat the socks off most city restaurants, with a wine list to match!
Our favourite place to relax, enjoy the wonderful views from the room, and absolutely wonderful cuisine in the main dining room. So much to see in the area and to enjoy time away from the city. Hope to get back again very soon.
Spent the best 2 nights stay here we could have had anywhere. The Degustation menu was excellent and we could not find fault with anything at all.
Hands down the best food we’ve had in Victoria, and the whole experience was perfect for our 10th anniversary. We did some great bush walks directly from the hotel itself. Will definitely be back!
Have stayed at The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld several times, each has been wonderful, would recommend it to anyone wanting great food in a beautiful location. And who would not want that!!
No better way than to relax in front of the open fire at one of the cottages after a meal at the Royal Mail Hotel – bar, bistro or restaurant, all are excellent.
A totally unique place to stay, I had never been there before, but after all the recomendations I was hearing, I booked a weekend. I proposed to my girlfirend on the top of Mt Abrupt, We couldnt have asked for a better place to get engaged. We both cant wait to go back.
For a sublime weekend experience , go walking in the grampians then on to the Royal mail Hotel in Dunkeld ,a relaxing oasis but with five star elegance and attention to detail in every way…. top quality linen , up to date and sophisticated reading matter in your room, gorgeous art everywhere, professional and friendly staff and of course its famous extra extra fine dining. In the morning, waking up to the looming presence of Mt . Sturgeon is magic. Can’t wait to go back.
What a beautiful place to spend an anniversary, magnificent views and food to die for. Staff, service and amenities were excellent.
We live in Dunkeld and cannot believe our luck to have dined at the Royal Mail all the way on its journey towards the pinnacle of Australia’s fine dining. Gives country dining a whole new meaning.
The Royal Mail Hotel is something of a surprise and to be recommended to those travelling interstate, touring in the Grampians region or wider. We visited there with some friends from Denver USA and really enjoyed the stay. We included the deluxe dining package and I have to say it was a meal to remember, exceptional food and wines to dream about. Dunkeld makes a good place for regional touring; because it’s within easy reach of so many attractions. Lots of bushwalking trails are nearby and for daytrip outings there is plenty within an hours driving time, the coast, the mountains or regional towns. We did a trip to the Coonawarra, Mt Gambier and Princess Margaret Caves one day – returning in time for cocktails and dinner. Looking forward to our next stay at the RMH.
The Royal Mail – a hidden oasis of unique fine food, dining and accommodation experiences. Set at the foot of The Grampians, the Royal Mail boasts a tranquil escape from the world. Dont miss it!
We’ve stayed here in both Spring and Autumn and both were an absolute delight. The food, view from hotel window and drives to the Spring wildflower displays were all enchanting. Not to be missed!
Great friendly atmosphere, modern comfortable accommodation, and outstanding food in a wonderful rural environment.Nothing else like it!
To celebrate the completion of our sons Architecture degree we gave him and his wife a weekend at the Royal Mail there is no better place and no better experience to reward for years of hard work.
I visited The Royal Mail just for the food and wine – and was delighted to find so much more! Attentive, knowledgeable staff, superb accommodation, delightful walks and breathtaking scenery – an allround winter getaway winner!
This South Australian foodie wants to go back and this time stay in those quaint stone cottages, oh to dream!
We really enjoy our annual stay at the Royal Mail Hotel, food delicious, rooms comfortable, and wine list, not matched anywhere…. keep up the high standard.
Royal Mail Dunkeld…for the bluest sky, the cleanest air, the colour of a Sturt Desert Pea against silver, a shaft of sunlight falling on crisp white linen and food to die for.
The Royal Mail has everything – fine dining, excellent rooms and the silence of a small Western District town.
Absolutely brilliant on all levels. No where like it is Australia.
Talk about a “room with a view”, great views from the balcony, the rooms are large and very comfortable. The restaurant is a must, great food.
waking up to the views of the mountain enveloped in clouds with only glimpses of the dramatic outcrop to be revealed as the day progress was stunning. It was a trip well worth the diversion en route to Adelaide. I went for the food but found so much more.
Spectacular location with great rooms and a fantastic restaurant, just the sort of place for a winter get away. Loved our stay there recently and can’t wait to go back again.
There is nowhere in Australia like the Royal Mail. Exceptional food, brilliant service, exceptional wine list and a kitchen garden have made this a foodie diversion worthy of an overnight stay. Best way to get us out of Melbourne and visiting Western Victoria. (It’s inspired me to go to Spain and see what inspired Dan Hunter!)
Food!
Even though it has been some time since I’ve visited Dunkeld , the Royal Mail Hotel has had a good reputation for fine food , good service and a icy cold beer.
Stunning views. Outstanding food. Wonderful service.
A unique Australian gastronomic experience. We ate one of the best meals of our lives, most of it grown on-site. Welcoming, attentive staff, amazing views, native garden tours, walking trails into the Grampians – a wonderful weekend away!
A lovely hotel with excellent accommodation, food and wine. Centrally located for day trips to the Grampians, the Wimmera and Warrnambool/Port Fairy.
Lovely views of the Grampians, Deluxe accomodation and fine foods and wine. Interesting museum and historic Post Office etc and other historic or noteworthy buildings.
Stylish, modern & super comfortable rooms, stunning views, tranquil, and a choice of food and wine only to be envied!
The rooms are very spacious and modern, one of the most comfortable hotels I have stayed in. The dining room was very well presented and the meals spectacular. And the scenery was magnificent, a beautiful town and beautful hotel.
Excellent dining, and accommodation overlooking the lower Grampian Range. Great walks within the property through the old Redgums and wildflowers. A short stay is not long enough.
Stunning view, exceptional dining and one of the best wine lists I have come across. All staff from reception to the public bar went out of their way to make the stay a memorable experience.
A destination dining experience unrivaled in Australia. The hotel grows its own organic vegetables, herbs, stone fruit, olives and berries, has free-range chickens for egg production and sources other produce locally to provide a unique, nature-based cuisine influenced by the restaurant’s stunning location at the foot of the looming Grampians Ranges. Exceptional food, one of Australia’s best wine collections and a magical location explain the long list of accolades including Australian Gourmet Traveller 2009 Regional Restaurant of the Year, The Age Good Food Guide 2009 Country Restaurant of the Year and Australian Hotels Association 2009 Best Restaurant – Country.
Fabulous modern rooms, a stunning view of Mt Sturgeon and delicious food and wine. Simply perfect!
Beautiful views, beautiful food. Ideal getaway!
the farmhouse has a claw bath, 4 bedrooms, antique furniture and a view of the grampians beyond compare
A luxurious mountain view room coupled with the most fantastic and innovative dining room and menu plus a tranquil location make the Royal Mail a must.
A lovely stay all round, from the quality of the rooms, the views, the walks close by and especially the dining experience.
Fantastic dining experience with perfectly matched wines. Definately worht the drive.
An opportunity to experience bold, exquisite food prepared with with locally grown, seasonal produce while enjoying the magnificent, timeless expanse of the Grampians.
The view from your floor to ceiling windows/ glass sliding door is breath taking!!!!!!! I could of sat out on my balcony & sip a lovely glass of local wine for hours!!!!!!
Some fining dining experiences in the provinces can be somewhat less than enightening. The Royal Mail is one location where everything comes together: fine cooking, elegant wines, and friendly service and the location are all flawless.
This boutique hotel with a beautiful view of the Grampians is complemented by the by the fine dining experience.
