Coming a long distance form the other end of the state, Mallacoota, its fair to say that this is a long way to go for a meal. For every km in the car the experience at the Royal mail matches with delight and an abundance of taste sensation. The Degustation menu cooked by Dan Hunter and his crew was just sublime, a truly out of body experience, likened to that of seeing an exhibition by your favourite artist. The accommodation was perfect, we ended up booking an extra night, just to savor the whole experience. Also to round off an amazing weekend the local baby sitter who was arranged prior to our arrival was a lovely young local girl who did a fantastic job looking after our son. Highly recommended.

Despite dining at a few highly regarded/awarded restaurants in Australia and overseas this still is our best experience. The food and matching wines (in generous measure) were superb but the friendly and knowledge staff made it even more special. Then we were able to stroll a few metres to our room knowing that in the morning we would wake to the view of the Grampians, and be able to drive and walk around them after a great breakfast. A nice touch was that the staff had the names of the flowers taken from the lovely native gardens around the hotel that were in the vase at the front desk to assist the ignorant!

Lovely friendly accommodation/ food/ wine package. Delightful garden walks – we could take the dogs – on leads because of the wildlife about. Comfortable rooms – choose one with the stunning mountain views. We were there during the hot February blackouts, and spent a couple of dark evening hours in the pool before bed.

Views, wine, food in a fabulous little spot called Dunkeld. If Anthony Bourdin thinks it’s a fine establishment and worth travelling from the other side of the world for, I can only agree with him! He should know…

The Royal Mail Hotel offers the traveller a place to stay and recoup as it would have done in the past when the carriage stopped there on its way to Melbourne or Adelaide.
This picturesque spot offers you sublime dining in a world class restaurant with stunning views of the majestic Grampians from your hotel accomodation.

My wife & I have stayed at the Royal Mail Hotel on quite a few occassions over the last 3 or 4 years. We have enjoyed our stays here every time & find the modern rooms have a relaxing feel to them, especially with the magnificent views of the Grampians out on the room’s back verandah.
The staff make your stay welcoming, and what can I say about the food, this is where the word excellent comes to mind every time. Part of the relaxed charm & quaintness of staying here is the lovely township of Dunkeld as well.
We have also stayed at the Mt. Sturgeon bluestone cottages, which are part of the Royal Mail Hotel accomodations group, and found this to be both picturesque & peaceful.

As a group of 5 couples, we stayed 2 nights at The Homestead. Beautifully restored bluestone buliding with log fires and elegant furnishings. Pick up and drop off from the restaurant. Great food, suburb wine list and attentative service from staff. For a large group recommend the Homestead. Relaxing scenary, a few reds, some nibbles, good friends. What could be better?

We’ve been to the Royal Mail a few times and each time we enjoy something new – it just gets better. The setting was glorious. My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages. The cottage faced Mt Sturgeon on one side, and faced sheep paddocks with the huge red river gums on the other side. We had the most wonderfully relaxing and romantic time for our anniversary. This time we went for the de-gustation menu with matching wines and it blew our minds. We love good food and wine, but this was the cleverest and the tastiest meal we have ever had at a restaurant. We would never have thought of matching some of the flavours we had and they worked so wonderfully well – it was simply sensational. We savoured every mouthful. The staff were attentive but not annoyingly so – we still enjoyed our privacy. We will return again and again – we’ve been telling all our friends to go to the Royal Mail Hotel too.

The Royal Mail is a truly memorable hotel… an experience which is easily recalled long after the visit has passed. The closeness with nature makes this a stand out experience…huge windows frame the landscape beautifully, and with no people or buildings in sight, it feels like it’s just you and the bush. Great idea to provide maps for private bush walking trails nearby…kangaroos hopping by make this a special experience even for an aussie…overseas visitors would find this a treat. All this and outstanding food, wine, staff, with stylish interiors and artwork…excellent.

A great place to stay, it has accommodation to suit all budgets, we have stayed in the cottage with friends, in the grand homestead at Mt Sturgeon with the ‘ yabbi divers’ a cycling group, the back packers with our family and at the hotel in one of the rooms. On each occassion we have either had lovely meals in the dining room, bistro and conference centre, and great breakfasts at the royal mail or delicious continental breakfast at our accommodation. I highly recommend staying at the Royal Mail and the views are amazing

Our friends recently had their wedding at the royal mail hotels function centre, had an absolutely fantastic day, everything catered for. Stayed there that night, waking upto an amazing view of the mountains right outside our bedroom window. We are also lucky enough to live only 30 minutes away so we have induldged in the lunch and dinner menus a few times, leaving extremely satisfied after every meal.

Royal Mail Hotel is an unforgettable experience. Set at the foot of the Grampians, with rooms overlooking Mt Sturgeon, it combines the best of a nature retreat with the exquisite creativity of chef Dan Hunter and his team. During our last visit in the heatwave of late January 2009, an 8 hour power cut throughout the region started just as we were sitting down for our meal. We were served a peerless meal even though the team were working by candlelight in 45C plus temperatures. As on our first visit, the somellier”s wine matching was superlative and the service excellent. Breakfasts, including the Grampians Pure sheep’s yoghurt by local Glen Thompson farmer, is great too. The Hotel offers a range of walks on their property and you’ll be enchanted by the swamp wallabies. We are looking forward to bringing friends there for a couple of days in early November. It’s an irresistable holiday in a beautiful part of Victoria.

“Like an oasis in the desert is the Royal Mail to the Western Districts” After the drive from Melbourne the Royal Mail was a fabulous place to stop. After staying at this boutique hotel twice, are looking forward to revisiting maybe next year. The views from our room were breathtaking and it was a joy to sit out on the balcony and drink in the atmosphere. The fine dining was excellent and we enjoyed the quietness and serenity of the area. Loved also visiting Halls Gap. Can’t wait to come back. Worth five stars.

My husband and I had not had a holiday together for as long as we could remember. We were given a gift of a 3 day stay at the Royal Mail. We arrived not knowing what to expect – and truth be known, not really expecting much, but we totally blown away by how lovely the hotel looked. We were warmly welcomed, directed to our room, and immediately fell in love with the place – it was so cosy and classy, all in one. Breakfast was ‘to die for’ – especially the lamb’s milk yoghurt combinations, and the lunch and dinner menus offered at the bistro and restaurant were not only served promptly and with style, but were some of the best meals we have tasted. The scene from our window was breathtaking. The relaxing atmosphere was exactly what we needed to unwind. We will be back very soon. Never before have we been so impressed with a place.

The Royal Mail is truly a sublime dining experience from the time you arrive. The staff are professional, welcoming and attentive and nothing is left to chance. The menu is exquisite, the wine list in a league of its own … the only one problem is choosing what to have. The standard and quality of the food is on a part with the best restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney. They use the freshest of ingredients and the beautiful aspect of this is that much of it is sourced locally … and even grown in the garden outside. The meals I have had have been a taste sensation. For a truly memorable dining experience do yourself a favour and book a table now!!!!

We dined in a group of 16. Despite the numbers the kitchen served an exceptional de-gustation meal – truly Melbourne quality in a regional area. The wines were delightful but perhaps a bit pricey. The serving staff were attentive and charming. The accommodation was not of the same quality and starting to appear dated. I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to reserve a king sized bed, and was told instead that it was luck of the draw upon check in.

This destination has something for everyone. My husband is a keen gardener – but only of Australian species, so when we pulled in the native gardens surrounding all buildings was given an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’. Our accomodation was all you could wish for – a modern approach without the coldness that some sleek abodes can exude. We enjoyed the view, bith of the Grampians, and of the birds and wallabies outside our room.
Dinner was amazing. the wait staff apporachable and attentive, degustation menu ensuring that we tried combinations which otherwise we would of shied away from – and leaving us in no doubt that the chef and his team are one of the finest in Australia as each course was innovative and complemented the previous. The wine list was overwhelming, but by relying on the advice given and matching wines to courses, we were able to experience a range of local and overseas labels. This was an oustanding weekend break.

    Cannot wait to go back!

A truly delightful stay. Long walks on the property in beautiful countryside, well-appointed and comfortable accommodation and of course, food and wines of the highest standard, prepared by the team of chefs within the diners’ view, make for a special experience.

From the moment you arrive you know you are somewhere special. Surrounded by ancient and beautiful mountains you just know the Royal Mail is about to deliver warmth, comfort and unforgettable food and wine. We were not disappointed, a truly memorable meal and I still think about that 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon. As you leave you begin thinking about how you can organise to come again.

    Sublime weekend!
Dawn views of mists over the mount. Wildlife & vegetation in abundance. Accommodation & facilities accessible & comfortable. Dining area layout & atmosphere welcoming & allows enough space to feel at ease & allow for privacy. The dining & wine was finely choreographed & dialogue with the waitpersons added to the dynamic of an exquisitley designed & delivered food appreciation experience. Seasonal influence on the menu was evident and quality of even the simplest items emphatic. The wine recommendations most complimentary.
My husband has some some severe difficulties due to Parkinson’s disease, but the ease of access to the facilities, information on the walks & the help and positive attitude of the Royal Mail staff never made us feel that we were being “accomodated”. The first weekend in May 2009 was a vary precious one for us, It was a late “Honeymoon” weekend & one that we look forward to repeating. Soon!

Apart from the beautiful views, spacious bedrooms with excellent sheets, the food at the Royal Mail Hotel was superb. In the dining room the 10 or so courses were each prepared with great delicacy allowing full pleasure of the senses; aroma, taste and texture. The wine from Australia, particularly a Great Western Chardonnay were extremely good, and the International wines were very good as well. All the wines complimented the food. We ate in the Bistro one night and the food there was terrific, great taste. We also ate in the bar on the first night of our stay coming late and preferring a brief meal. The corned beef was the best I have tasted. Altogether delightful!
ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

The food at the Royal Mail Dunkeld was exceptional. We could not fault the food, the service nor the room. Even the shower of rain on the Saturday afternoon while we were walking didn’t dampen our mood. We were so looking forward to the dinner and it did not disappoint us. We have recommended this on numerous occasions and will continue to do so. We are looking forward to hopefully returning again in the near future.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the rugged surrounds of the Grampians National Park, which beckons you to explore as it stand powering above you from your balcony. The Roal Mail is the welcoming oasis at the end of the day, being only minutes from your days adventure, an airconditioned retreat from the intense country heat, and when it comes to a place to dine the degustation is a journey worth taking in itself.

The Royal Mail Hotel at Dunkeld is a lovely, friendly place to stay and a glorious place to eat dinner. The precision of the kitchen and the skill of the wait staff are both astonishing. Course after course is delivered at what seem like the right intervals, even when people at the same table have different degustation menus. The wine service is similarly perfectly timed. All staff are welcoming while being thoroughly professional — a stunning achievement.
The other great pleasure is the peace and quiet of the grounds, allowing only the calls of the birds and the wind to be heard. This joy is enhanced on a walk around the arboretum — when working up an appetite for dinner !

A beautiful retreat into nature which is reflected in the food.
For two chefs from melbourne you couldn’t dream up a more perfect getaway. The food was so utterly surprising while remaining grounded and soulful and you could still smell the earth on the leaves that were straight from the kitchen garden. The Royal Mail is all about food. The hotel’s facade is striking, there are some lovely walks, and it’s a base for the southern Grampians, but people coming here are are in it for the restaurant. And rightly so. This is undoubtedly one of Victoria’s leading restaurants, and in my own view a much more exciting culinary destination than Melbourne’s leading eateries. Chef Dan Hunter brings refreshing innovation to his dishes, with creative use of varied ingredients and techniques, plus a satisfying emphasis on seasonality and local produce. There’s a bit of molecular gastronomy in there, but unlike the theatrical style of Vue de Monde, this is a complement to the ingredients rather than the main event. The bistro is great for other nights, serving satisfying, well-executed and really well-priced gastropub fare which mixes up modernised Brit and Spanish classics, most of which are also available in the pub as the third eating option. I wish this were my local. It’s well known for it’s wine list as well. As for the hotel itself, beautiful mountain views, and all the usuals you expect, in a fairly familiar modern style, which is fully satisfactory and comfortable without being particularly notable. I’ve not stayed at the bluestone cottages, which sound lovely, but I would warn anyone away from thinking they might be walking distance from the restaurant. Dunkeld is a pleasant but very small town with not much else in it – Halls Gap is the real base for the Grampians – so the pub/bistro/restaurant are really the only places to go in the evening unless you plan on a long car journey. Overall, if you are into food and drink, the special journey is worth it, but otherwise it is a very pleasant (although rather remote) base for the Grampians with the best pub grub you’ll have eaten in a long time.

The Royal Mail Hotel, Victoria looked like an old movie theatre from the early 1980’s a large curved round frontage of glass windows and surround by blossoming wattle. We ate lunch in the bistro watching the rain, with a bottle of fantastic burgundy. The lamb I ate was so soft and wonderfully tasty, the egg croquette style with wild mushrooms was as tasty as it was delicate. For dinner we were so lucky to enjoy the tasting menu of the most outstanding artistic food. Green lip abalone in marine essence, spring vegetables, shoots, and flowers literally from their market gardens, a tuna broth with flowers and radish floating on the surface and many more, all matched to wines. The maître de in times of need would run past our window across the road and behind the rare bookstore like a new mystery character being introduced to the film, to the cellar to collect a wine selected by a customer.

Staying at the Royal Mail Hotel was an entirely outstanding experience from its comfy rooms to fantastic food in a location that is as secret feeling as a lost land. As we left the following morning a dozen or so 356 Porsches were all lined up outside the hotel ready to move on to a new location for the day like little lady beetles assembling for a new flight.

I luckily got to spend my birthday here this year and by far it was the best I’ve ever had. The mid week gourmand package superceded my expectations. On so many occasions when champagne is offered as part of a package it is non drinkable this was not only drinkable but divine. The rooms had stunning australian terrain views and were surrounded my scents and sounds of the australian bush – such serenity. The degustation menu offered honestly the most flavoursome, real and aesthetically beautiful gastronomic creations I have encountered. The wines which were matched were perfect and I have since enjoyed many bottles from various local vineyards I would never have heard of. Thank you for sharing such innovation and service giving us an otherwise unchartered experience.

Used to have a few beers in the old,old pub at met my wife ain Stawell at the other end of the Grampians. The Royal Mail now provides a wonderful base to revisit all the old camp sites and fishing places with the comforts of life needed as age creeps upon us. As an ex chef and large caterer in Melbourne I appreciate the food, wine and service and the difficulties in operating ouside major centre. Hats off as well to the chefs who painstakingly peel those minute vegetables what patience! THE ROYAL MAIL , Dunkeld is a soul place for me. From the Mountain View rooms the majestic Mt Sturgeon towers above the valley, sometimes shrouded in mist,or the backdrop for flights of birds. The grounds are a delight and now the brochure available from the hotel encourages one to walk and explore;the mountain itself for the hardy , the beautiful grounds themselves or the tranquil arboretum nearby by at leisure.

However THE ROYAL MAIL is not only noted for the spirit of place,it is a superb destination for FOOD. From the glories of the restaurant to the more casual bistro and bar food;to eat in the hotel is a wonderful experience. Breakfast too is tasty and delicious.

THE ROYAL MAIL is a destination in itself. When you have finished exploring and eating you can retire to the beautifully appointed rooms to rest and enjoy the room with a view.

I took an unexpected break in my trip. I arrived tired and exhausted. The beautiful surroundings (inside & outside) were food for the soul. The peace and tranquility seeped in and I left refreshed with equilibrium restored. I only have to think of the beautiful mountain view from my window and that feeling is right back with me.
Oh and did I mention the food? Sensational!
My experience was far more than accommodation and far, far more than I expected.

The Royal Mail has it all for destination dining. Apart from the views, great walks, great accommodation choices, it lures discerning palates with its amazing wine cellar and surely the best regional dining experience to be had.

At the begining of the day AND at the end of the day, this location in the Southern Grampians says it all! The motel facilities are great but the shearers cottages only 3km away are even more secluded and closer to nature. You may discuss the food for a very long time, but take a few days break….not just a weekend… and walk or drive in any direction from the Royal Mail Hotel as your base to enjoy even more of fabulous Western Victoria too! Dunkeld is a great place to be.

We have stayed three times at the Royal Mail & we have enjoyed our stay each time. Not only are the three dining options of a high standard but the rooms are modern & comfortable as well. We always wander through the well cared for native gardens at the hotel to see what is in bloom & we walk along the many pathways on the property.
And the Grampians are a short drive away if you want a more strenuous hike.
A couple of hours drive from Melbourne & you can escape to a delightful break at the Royal Mail.
It’s one of our favourite places to stay.

We try to go to the Royal Mail at least once a year for a few days. The accommodation is excellent with marvellous views over the Grampians, there are easy and more difficult walks all around and the service at the hotel is great. But then there is the restaurant with magnificent food and a wine list that must be the best in country Victoria. We usually find a marvellous claret at a reasonable price. Dining at the Royal Mail is an experience not to be missed, And if you are there for more than one night, the Bistro provides excellent food.
I commend the Royal Mail for its sccommodation, food and wine.

Fantastic food and stunning wine list where the 96 Palliser chardonnay is to die for- price even reduced on 2nd visit as judged ‘slightly past its best’. We drank 2 bottles to check! Degustation menu satisfies the greediest and rooms dreamily comfortable with post prandial and pre breakfast walks nearby. Main challenge is working out which way to drive there and back. Will make it an annual pilgrimage.

Stunning concept – history revisted with a modern take as art deco meets rustic charm of our early forbears dwellings at the base of stunning Mt Sturgeon. Choice of stylish high class dining deco-style at the Royal Mail, relaxed bistro service or customised private dining in a historic homestead. Modern accomodation to showering in a water tank. Meld the differences with brilliant local dining, fantastic wine list as you relax and soak up the majesty of the Grampians. If you’re lucky, you too might sight the black panther of the Grampians through the walls of glass- friends did at their wedding there!

The Royal Mail Hotel certainly makes you feel like royalty. It serves up the most exquisite meals which are plated up fit for a King or a Queen. The decor is restrained and relaxing. The view are so beautiful you feel impelled to write an anthem to herald them with each glimpse. The chef’s garden is one of many wonderful secrets awaiting adventurous courtiers who stroll through the grounds. The hints of Art Deco take you back to an era of sheer luxury and easy living.

We spent a night at the Royal Mail Hotel after nearly four weeks on the road. Our trip took us from Melbourne to Mildura, Arkaroola, William Creek, Oodnadata. Coober Pedy, Woomera, Clare, and Coonawarra. We decided our last night on the road before returning to Melbourne would be at a beautiful hotel with fantastic views of mountains and one of the most memorable meals available. We got all of this at the Royal Mail Hotel.

A little known part of Victoria. I spent my school days in the area and have great memories, especially of the Grampions. What vision and entrepreneurship to create the wonderful country accommodation and dining experience that is “The Royal Mail Hotel” Dunkeld. The secret is, of course, to match the location, facilities and ambiance with management and staff who share the vision – well done to all.

Fantastic place for a luxurious long weekend – the best in Australia. Wonderful rooms with beautiful views. Sensational walks for all from the adventurous and the ponderous. And then there’s the food. This bistro was great – but the degustation menu from the restaurant was sublime. The wines were well matched and generously served – a credit Lok who presided over this monumental task. We chose the vintage selection but next time will indulge in the international matching wines..

My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon at the Royal Mail Hotel 8 years ago in 2001. We have since returned over 20 times and have recently been able to share our favourite location with our 2 Chihuahua’s. Our favourite part of the Royal Mail Hotel are the Mt Sturgeon Cottages that are located approximately 3km away from the main part of the hotel and restaurant. Formally shearers’ cottages, these beautiful 19th century blue stone cottages have been restored to their natural charm with local hardwood floorboards, an open fire place with leather lounge area, colonial style kitchen, and a separate bedroom area. Attached to the cottage is also a walk-in water tank that has been converted into an ingenious bathroom. The stunning views of Mt Sturgeon and Mt Abrupt from your cottage are absolutely breathtaking. Wake up in the morning to the aroma of freshly plunged coffee and enjoy the local produce supplied in your complimentary breakfast basket. Relax outside and unwind to the peaceful country surroundings and majestic views of the Southern Grampians.

The shearers’ cottages are wonderfully rustic, and we loved being able to get up in the morning and enjoy our breakfast hamper outside with Mount Sturgeon as our ‘visual entertainment’. Dinner at the restaurant is an absolute must – you will be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation, so the tasting menu with matching wines can be happily savoured.

The ‘Garden Appartments’ were elegant, spacious and, even better, just across the road from the most splendid dining experience! Just catching glimpses from our table of the expertise and concentration of the kitchen staff as they went about their work was a fascinating experience. It was evident that the dishes were carefully thought through and executed with a real depth of experience. The setting and the pace of a place like Dunkeld is unique. The visitor centre can supply you with a real sense of the history of this little town on the railway line and its role in the development of the Grampians and the Western District. I anticipate going back there again soon.

Spent the best 2 nights stay here we could have had anywhere. The Degustation menu was excellent and we could not find fault with anything at all.

Hands down the best food we’ve had in Victoria, and the whole experience was perfect for our 10th anniversary. We did some great bush walks directly from the hotel itself. Will definitely be back!

No better way than to relax in front of the open fire at one of the cottages after a meal at the Royal Mail Hotel – bar, bistro or restaurant, all are excellent.

For a sublime weekend experience , go walking in the grampians then on to the Royal mail Hotel in Dunkeld ,a relaxing oasis but with five star elegance and attention to detail in every way…. top quality linen , up to date and sophisticated reading matter in your room, gorgeous art everywhere, professional and friendly staff and of course its famous extra extra fine dining. In the morning, waking up to the looming presence of Mt . Sturgeon is magic. Can’t wait to go back.

The Royal Mail Hotel is something of a surprise and to be recommended to those travelling interstate, touring in the Grampians region or wider. We visited there with some friends from Denver USA and really enjoyed the stay. We included the deluxe dining package and I have to say it was a meal to remember, exceptional food and wines to dream about. Dunkeld makes a good place for regional touring; because it’s within easy reach of so many attractions. Lots of bushwalking trails are nearby and for daytrip outings there is plenty within an hours driving time, the coast, the mountains or regional towns. We did a trip to the Coonawarra, Mt Gambier and Princess Margaret Caves one day – returning in time for cocktails and dinner. Looking forward to our next stay at the RMH.

waking up to the views of the mountain enveloped in clouds with only glimpses of the dramatic outcrop to be revealed as the day progress was stunning. It was a trip well worth the diversion en route to Adelaide. I went for the food but found so much more.

There is nowhere in Australia like the Royal Mail. Exceptional food, brilliant service, exceptional wine list and a kitchen garden have made this a foodie diversion worthy of an overnight stay. Best way to get us out of Melbourne and visiting Western Victoria. (It’s inspired me to go to Spain and see what inspired Dan Hunter!)

A destination dining experience unrivaled in Australia. The hotel grows its own organic vegetables, herbs, stone fruit, olives and berries, has free-range chickens for egg production and sources other produce locally to provide a unique, nature-based cuisine influenced by the restaurant’s stunning location at the foot of the looming Grampians Ranges. Exceptional food, one of Australia’s best wine collections and a magical location explain the long list of accolades including Australian Gourmet Traveller 2009 Regional Restaurant of the Year, The Age Good Food Guide 2009 Country Restaurant of the Year and Australian Hotels Association 2009 Best Restaurant – Country.
