tidal river camping site

The southernmost point of the Australian mainland, Wilsons Promontory (affectionately known to Victorians as ‘the Prom’) is arguably the most loved national park in Victoria. Its 130 km coastline is framed by granite headlands, mountains, forests and fern gullies. Tidal River, 30 km inside the park boundary, is the focus for tourism and recreation. The park contains the largest coastal wilderness area in Victoria.

Tidal River has some 484 camping and caravan sites, beautifully situated near the beach and river.

Best place in Victoria – just gets better each year. We’ve been having a fabulous time there for 30 years! First went as a family group, then part of a school group, gained independence and went on our own and now bring the kids back – there really is something for everyone – wildlife, scenery, beach and now wonderful lodges have for that extra pizazz!

Natural, Victorian, peaceful and accommodation for all; camping, cabins, luxury accommodation, hiking, walking, running, swimming, surfing fishing or sleeping. Anything you want it is great.

Photos never do its beaches justice and so you are drawn back The hum of the surf is so natural. The unspoilt views are so refreshing. May we keep this one section of our coast for all future generations.

Visiting the Prom reminds me of who I am. My first holidays were as a young girl with my parents, siblings and family friends, later as a teenager with my peer group and the excitment of new relationships, later again with my new husband, then our young family and then with our own kids as teenagers discovering their own new realationships. Now we go as an older couple, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends. There has always been something for us there – energetic walks of discovery, relaxing beach strolls, yoga in an isolated spot, wombats and birds. With Oberon watching over the bays and out to the ocean, and staying the same while I have aged, I know that I am a but a small part of nature and that the Prom will be there for generations to love well after I am gone.

Try going in winter, for a change. The wombats, emus, possums, wallabies and roos are aplenty, even in the camping ground.

From Tidal river you can walk so many tracks, hang out on the surf beach, play in the river and meet friendly local animals! Its so relaxing and a beautiful place to be.

I love the prom! – for years I have gone in the mid-year ballot for the chance to visit and stay at my favourite place in Victoria. When you are notified by Parks Victoria that you’ve been granted access to the park for a week over Summer – it’s like winning Tattslotto! – not that I’d know what that feels like – though I imagine the same giddiness inside. Once there, the place just surrounds you, hugs you and makes you feel happy and welcome. Some of the wildlife can be a bugger sometimes (et al wombats) however the beach, the birds and the babes ;) all make this place worth the trip. I truly can’t wait until my next trip there some time soon (I hope)…

I have vivid memories of colorful Roselllas landing on my hat and wombats roving around at night. The scenery is inspiring and promotes happy, peaceful feelings. At night the happy murmurings of the campers blends magically with the sounds of the waves on the beach. Heaven might not be this good!

Tidal River is a beautiful haven away from the hustle and bustle. Beautiful beach, family friendly campsite with all amenities, fantastic sunsets, bushwalks, fishing and surf school. What makes it even more special is the visiting kookaburras that appear as you are cooking up a storm on the bbq. They fly from campsite to campsite watching over the cooking. Then at night when all is still the wombats come around to visit. All day the rosella’s pay a visit. One year a kangaroo went bounding past my tent in the early hours of the morning….

It is absolutely serene down there, a perfect way to unwind and refresh the mind, body and soul.

During WWll as a small child, I saw wild horses with tails streaming, galloping across the few open spaces on the Prom. In later years I visited as a teen ager then with my own children. As their children grew up, they now go hiking and camping across the Prom and to the Lighthouse. I love to take overseas visitors to experience the wild coast and the friendly birds. Where else do you have the bush and the beach meet with such amazing surroundings? No where! The beaches are so clean and the water so crystal clear. We also have enjoyed walking down to the lighthouse and overnighting in the lighthouse keepers cottages. What a special place in the world that is!

Between bush walking the rugged ranges and relaxing on the squeaky beaches – What better place than the Tidal River Camp Grounds to recharge the weary soul.

Where else in Victoria can a mother relax so much than at Tidal River. It has a shallow river for the kids to swim, roads for them to ride their bikes. Surf, sand and walks will keep the teenagers amused. The husband can launch his boat or just pull out a “coldie” and solve the problems of the world with fellow campers. Close to Melbourne, it is not a marathon drive. Whether you chose to stay in a cabin or a tent, Tidal River is a great experience for all ages, all degrees of fitness and ability.

Had a wonderful holiday here with our family. The thing we all remember is lying in our caravan and hereing the wind coming. Then experiencing the buffetting we got from it. A truly wonderous part of Australia.

I’ve been going to the Prom with my family every year since I was a child. Playing and swimming on the shores of the river keep us fully occupied until we grew up and discovered the surf beach. Its beautiful all times of the year, whether its 40 degrees and the sun is shining, or in the colder months. These days I seek out the Prom as the best place for relaxing and escaping from the world.

Beautiful spot to stay. You can either emerse yourself in the wildilfe in the bush or get carried away walking along the magnificent coastline beaches. You just don’t realize how honoured you are to have such a magnificent place to enjoy in your backyard.

A natural treasure! The prom has it all – bush, beach, river, mountain, the diversity of flora and fauna is astounding. With camping or cabin accommodation that does not intrude on nature, the tidal river campsite is a step off to wonderful adventure or just pure relaxation.

There might be more upmarket resorts in Victoria, but for sheer natural beauty, tranquility and the wonderful native wildlife, none can beat The Prom! No child could ever say “I’m bored” here – with wombats, rosellas, wallabies and kangaroos in their natural habitat, beaches to play on, water activities, bush walks and longer hikes to challenge the more adventurous, this is a place to truly savour. Parents will enjoy the peace and serenity of the park, and with accommodation choices for every budget, few could not be impressed with this Victorian gem. This is a place where memories are created.

The tidal river camping site proves you don’t need a five-star budget to enjoy first class surrounds. Stunning scenery greets you the moment you step out of your tent or cabin, along with the prolific wildlife that makes the prom its home. And whether you venture near or far you are treated to some of Victoria’s most spectacular beaches and walking tracks.

A truly stunning area of Victoria with the beach a hop, skip and jump away what more could you want? Gorgeous scenery all around and fantastic bush walks to do. Kayak up the Tidal River and the kids can splash around in the water. Native parrots, wombats and wallabies can be seen at arm’s length away and the camping facilities are ideal!

This great spot combines what Australia does best – the bush and the beach. Spend a day walking inland or strolling on the sand, end it all with a meal around a camp fire, followed possibly by a film under the stars. Something for everyone. Bliss.

Living within an hours drive our family has visited the Prom many times. The scenery is fantastic and the wildlife is there to be seen. Many photograph opportunities from sunrise to sunset throughout this wonderful park. Lots of access points to beaches from the main tourist road for those who are limited with walking ability and plenty of long bushwalks for those who want them. The lighthouse has just had a celebration with its special lighting. Walks to Sealers cove and camping overnight are popular bushwalking pastimes.

You camp amongst the wildlife, birds and wallabies sharing your breakfast. A short walk to Normans Bay and the Wombats are found grazing on the hills above the beach. The smell of the clear fresh air and you feel alive and ready to go. Many wonderful walks. Sometimes you feel you are the only person there!!
