walhalla’s star hotel

“Heaven is not in the making. It is here, ready and waiting for you.” This excerpt from the Guest Book at Walhalla’s Star Hotel speaks of the beauty, luxury and superlative service at this wonderful boutique hotel. Nestled into this historic Valley of The Gods, as Walhalla is affectionately known, Walhalla’s Star Hotel is a faithful reconstruction of the opulent facade of this landmark hotel of the Victorian Goldmining era. Inside however you will find a thoroughly modern establishment. We stayed for two nights back in 1998, a few weeks after it’s opening, and fell in love with both the tiny hamlet, and this fabulous hotel. We have gone back several times a year, every year since, and intend to do so for many years to come. If you value peace and tranquility, history and nature, great accomodation and even better service, you could do no better than Walhalla’s Star Hotel.

I had to go to Walhalla for research, to try & get my mum buried in the cemertery there, she had lived there as a little girl & so had to make this sad trip. I took my girlfriend along with me, stayed at the Star hotel. My girlfriend did not want to come, thinking just another hotel, but she came to keep me company. It was unbelievable, so different & so comfy, the history around the walls just surperb, the games & books on the shelf how great that was & the beautiflul leather couches, the sign post saying to the different places, how different & well thought out, the dinning room so eligiant, the tables looking just gorgeous, the food was terrific. I loved the diffent names written on the doors, we killed our self laughing, ours was called grey horse & im a greyheaded lady, really loved the ern sitting so you could help yoursef to a cuppa anytime. so well thought out, just a pleasure to stay there, my girlfrend said you didn’t tell me it was going to be like this, otherwise i would have made a bigger effort to come a couple of days earlier, and i have written this and going to enter this into a short story competition, thats how good a stay we had, you can’t beet it anyway, I have stayed in lots of hotels my husband use to be a shopfitter and travelled all over, but this hotel is just brilliant place.

After an exhiliating walk to all the sights I thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the lounge area with other visitors. The “olde world” atmosphere and refreshments enabled me to unwind after a hectic week at work. Dinner was delicious, the dessert was amazing (and guilt free after all the walking I did earlier in the day!)
    Well worth the visit.

The Walhalla Star is centrepiece to some of my most treasured memories. Beautiful Walhalla itself in Autumn, beautiful food and impressive service, peace and quiet and the most comfortable accomodation I have stayed at in a long time. On top, Michael (Manager) has an unmatched committment to his customers, demonstrated even today in helping me organise a suprise dinner for two for my best friend and her new husband. Thanks guys. Look forward to staying one night soon!

Walhalla is a magical experience of times past. Let yourself be taken back to a bygone era of gold rushes and simple living in beautiful surrounds. Learn about the local history, interesting characters and a way of life so different to today. The Star Hotel is the jewel in the crown- and of course the crown is GOLD.

    Quiet, relaxing,comfortable, intersting& beautiful landscape .

My husband & I came home feeeling very relaxed & refreshed . What else could you want.

The owner & staff of the Star Hotell are friendly, helpful , informative and not intrusive.

The rooms are clean and very comfortable king size beds with comfortable beds. Added little touch of a choccy of the pillow made us feel special and that customers are cared for.

The meals were lovely and the breakfast was amazing. So much choose of food was offered for breakfast and you could take your time over it, while watching the mist rise above the valley & streetscape.

The surrounding area is beautiful, picturesque and very interesting. Ther are some lovely walks to take around the town. I would recomend anyone to stay here who wants to recharge their batteries and enjoy some quiet time.

A walk about the town at night bring in a different propective ,
Carn’t wait to get back ther again some time.

Stayed at the Star for a conference a few years back – an oasis of civilisation in the remote bush with a superb standard of service and finishes. The operator has a great knowledge of local attractions and developed a really good country hotel that has been complemented by a great little public cafe serving excellent coffee. All up, the Star is a class act.

We found the staff helpful and friendly. There’s alot to do I Walhalla so I’m glad we stayed for two nights to spread out our advntures. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area

There are not that many places left these days that can offer the tranquility of isolation (from modern pressures) yet still provide the stimulus of mind. Walhalla has many historical points of interest and a great base for treks into the surrounding ranges and just like many small towns the centre of community spirit is the hotel. And if that hotel offers a warm atmosphere coupled with good food and service then what more could one need to feel life is good. Walhalla has one such hotel.

we stayed in the star hotel for 5 days in 2007
the peace and quiet was excellent the walks were amazing and the people so nice
but i have to say every place i go i look for stickydate pudding on the menu
when i saw the star hotel had it i had to try it
now from that day on when ever i travel interstate or overseas have stickydate pudding and i use the stickydate from the walhalla stare hotel as a rating
iv been to places that come close but nothing as good as the star hotel
one last thing the drive there is easy not to far from the everything but far enough

Walhalla is a stunningly beautiful place and we had 2 wonderful nights at the Star. We stayed Sunday and Monday night so that we had the town and the hotel to ourselves. The food was excellent and the rooms very well appointed. The lounge had an open fire going and we could sit down there and relax. The hosts were friendly and helpful. Altho I just live in the township of Moe, Walhalla has always been a great place to sit back and relax. The Star Hotel, is the most relaxing way to also spend your night there. Vote1 for Michael as ambassador. The Star’s brilliance notwithstanding, I can’t wait for a better season at BawBaw as that South Face rd cuts down the time between cozy and crazy. Walhalla’s Star Hotel was our favourite stop on a 3 week trip to Australia. Large, well appointed rooms and great food in a beautiful location. Owner Michael Leaney is a superb host who organised plenty of activities to entertain our 2 sons aged 20 &22. We all enjoyed the gold mine tour, 4WD trip in the surrounding area, rail journey and walks around Walhalla. We arrived wondering what we would do for 2 days and left wishing we had more time to stay.

Walhalla’s Star Hotel is charming place to stay. We stayed for 3 nights in spring 2008 the cherry blossoms in town was fabulous. The hotel itself is a faithful replica of the oringinal hotel the old style outside hides a modern inside! No tv or mobile which was great! Good food and many local wines to pick from the hosts are freindly and happy to have a chat, it’s very clean & tidy with large rooms with ensuite there’s also a huge book libarary to browse through in the comfortable guests lounge! Perfect for a kid free weekend!!

My two teenage sons, my husband & I really enjoyed staying at the fabulous Walhalla’s Star Hotel, Warm & comfortable, felt homely with personal touches of the owners, The owners & staff are welcoming a bit eccentric at times but friendly and willing to help.
We picked their brains for ages finding out all about the towns history!
The hotel was very clean & tidy, the rooms are large and spacious with ensuite, a common guest lounge is a good spot to have a quite read from the book library.
They serve great meals at night & a continental breaky in the morning.

From Gold mine tours, 4wd driving, great walks and a mountain railway its has something for all of the family!

Excellent venue with great view of the rotunda. Very good service & best coffee in town.

Walhalla’s unique charm may be that it is a moment frozen in time, a unique snpashot of Victoria’s golden mining era but staying in Walhalla does not mean staying amidst doilies and chintz, or roughing it without modern luxuries. Walhalla’s Star Hotel may be respectfully historic on the outside but inside there are king-size beds, plush blankets, private lounges, and a wonderful restaurant. The lack of televisions due to no reception, the wonderfully appointed library of books & music ensure that a galss of bubbles before the wood burning fire has never left one more relaxed or blissfully at peace. This town & this hotel are unique. If you’ve not visited, you’ve not lived.

Couldn’t agree more. Walhalla is a fabulous place and the Star Hotel makes it even better.
